An ex Clubbie and mate of mine has been using drones for a couple of years for Club Trips, Holidays, off road racing etc.
Gets truly awesome stills and vids.

They r a hot item 3D this is from myPoliceMackay and the local news paper titled up up and away ;The owner of a drone with a fitted GoPro was flying the device on Airlie Esplanade on Saturday, January 2 at 7:30 am as the weekend markets were being set up.

The drone was landed about thirty metres from where the owner was standing (safe landing location). A very opportunistic thief has quickly grabbed the drone as it was landed and ran into the nearby crowd – stealing it – as the owner watched on nearby.

The offender is described as being a male, of Caucasian appearance, in their late thirties and wearing a hat and black long sleeved t-shirt with a black backpack.

The owner is still in possession of the remote control… The offender will not be able to operate the drone without it.

If you have any information regarding the offence or the current location of the drone and GoPro, we encourage you to contact the Whitsunday Police station on 0749 488 888 or contact Crime Stoppers.

The relevant police report number to quote is QP1600010307.

Some thieves really are faster than a speeding bullet!

Theives really are the lowest life forms going around.

Just watched All for Adventure they seem to use a drone
to get extra footage. Still early days for them IMO hopefully
the price will come down sooner rather than later.
Pretty keen to get one at some stage

Not really early days now as the prices seem to have stabilised over the last 2 years or so on the better brands (DJI, Parrot etc).
My mate uses mostly DJI so around about $500 for the Phantom.

The next 'wave' of drones coming this year will have the ability to autonomously track moving targets and avoid stationary objects.
That will mean they can 'follow' people, skiers, cyclists, vehicles etc (up to the speed of the drone of course) and not crash into trees, dunes, terrain etc.
That will mean 1 person can set up the drone and then do their thing whilst filming themselves with no need to fly the drone
Release prices look like being well under USD 2,000 for those which might drop the current ones a bit more maybe.

Yeah someone from here was looking at pre-ordering one last year?
Pretty sure that Lily could not detect objects though and will crash into trees and stuff.

Yeah I think you're right. All the footage is in open areas. It would look awesome having some footage of somewhere like the Simpson desert trip though

Used the drone for some action up in Fraser Island 8 weeks ago. This was the last trip in my Hilux before selling it to make way for the Patrol.
Hope you enjoy the video (crank the sound up for some nice music). Cheers- Tony

they have a greater range and height than I would imagine

It is quite frightening how high they can climb. The one I used for the Fraser Island footage was capable of 2 km up in the air (or to the sides) Problem was that after 500m verticle, I would loose sight of it, and as such, was too scared to climb in further. 500m was plenty high enough and still provided excellent footage.

Actually Mudski. I think the Mavrick is a much better option now compated to the Phantoms. It folds up compact (much better when 4WDing). If flys longer, faster, and further and still has a 4K camera. I have found the larger Phantom to be a bit difficult to transport around and set up when on a difficult trip.

Thanks Tony. It will be a long while I reckon before I would even speak of getting a drone. The wife shakes her head at me every time I see a new gadget.

Yes. Looks like a much better unit and may even possibly fit in the glovebox (not sure). It looks like it would be much much quicker to unfold and launch compared to the P3. Type it into YouTube and you will see some good promo-videos.

Hey mark if you already have a GoPro you should check out the 3DR solo
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4zIbm1yvu9M
You will now have to get something like the GoPro karma as the 3DR is no longer around

Yes I use a phantom 3 drone all the time while camping and out 4wding. Just need to be very mindful of surroundings and people.

Just spotted this on Youtube, what a great idea for the world. Apparently 200 times cheaper than current detection/detonation methods and no people or animals closely involved :-) !

The Phantom 4 already does this using the app and/or groundstation. Its pretty impressive.
