Hi Trolatron, great photos, looks like you are having a lot of fun. Our patrols are all special, they don't need to have heaps of mods or accessories hanging off them. As long as it does what you want it to then that's great.

I made a speaker pod for the shorty.
Plan is to remove the speakers in the doors and build slide draws set up.

Trolatron - tell me more, tell me more!!! Did you build the dash mount/pod for the UHF? Any tips for the mount if you did it (looks good and saves me getting a roof console which I've been looking at)? How did you run the wiring into the roof for that rear speaker setup (from the back speakers I presume, but just running it through would make those wires red hot wouldn't it?? Did you run new wiring)? Love the shorty mate - looks a treat. Hear you on getting a wagon for more room, but I guess if the shorty is suiting the needs, then go with it - for all the obvious effort you have put into to it, make sure you get the reward from driving it!!

Bigrig ---- Trolatron - tell me more, tell me more!!!

I used some old pine lining boards for the frame of the pod
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk121/Bendero7/Cab2010.jpg

Bit of vinal from spotlight ( got the misses to do sewing )
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk121/Bendero7/Cab2016.jpg

And you need a helper on these big jobs..
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk121/Bendero7/Cab2019.jpg

I ran all the wires and aerial cables up the inside of the front of the dash i filed a small slot
in the top right hand corner of the dash face to allow the wires to come threw.
I used dubble sided velcro tape to hold it in position. I have hit some hard tracks
and its never moved at all.

I used the speaker wires that came with the speakers and ran them back to the head unit.
I plan on puting in a small amp and a sub and when i do that ill run all new bigger wires but as it is now it runs fine.
I ran the wires behind the plastic corner covers to get to the roof.

You're a star - thanks mate - love the idea and have been thinking of an overhead console, but the more I look into it, the only reason I want it is for somewhere to mount the UHF ... dash pod would be ideal ...

I tell ya i was nervous about doing the chop because i have never done anything to cars befor as in cutting into panels and stuff but it came out ok .
I cut the whole quater panel off from the outside, I cut away the outside skin as in the first picture and bent it down out of the way then its not to bad to get in there and cut the inner skin off.
Just remember to pull all the wireing out especially on the drivers side or you will cut into them.
I drilled a hole in from in behind where the plastic cover goes over the fuel filler pipes, up in the drivers wheel arch to run the wires back in to the break lights.passinger side is higher so was ok.

Well decided I needed to get things a bit more organized in the back of the shorty so have started a set of draws.
Not sure if it was nessesery but I put 2 fans over the twin head air compressor to help it keep a bit cooler when running , they are on a seperate switch so I can leave them on for a minute or two after pumping up tyres.

Made my own slide runners.

Sorry mate didnt take down any notes at the time.Im a sheety so it was easy for me to cut and fold the chanels and plate.I have seen on here somewhere a guy using RHS for the mounts which if thick enough would be a good option.I used 5mm plate for the mounts and 4mm plate on the sides so where the recovery hooks are is 9mm thick.

Thanks guys,
Been putting it off for a while now but a mate got done for no mudflaps so thought I better do something about it.
Had a scrounge around the shed and all I could find was 2 bits of different sized RHS that happened to fit together nicely and came up with the following removable set up.

When I done the quater chop I welded 3mm plate to fill in the bottom of it which is quite strong so
I used that as a mounting point.

Cheers Dave, I do have hand skills but they stop at the end of a spanner, anything past changing a tyre just about pulls me up I'd love to be able to pull hubs and diffs etc apart. I have never had to do any of that stuff so far but dont think ill get away with it forever with the tracks I take it up,will be interesting to see how I go with it when the time comes.

sibbles mate, the front bar weighs in at about 60kg and at a guess I'd say the rear would be around 20kg maby 25kg.

benders, internal and external angles, good welding, cutting once at the right length..making a design, purchasing, cutting and actually building a functional item?

I can change a tyre...bet you can do more than that.

Gotta get myself a little gasless Mig......and start practicing.

OK now I know Im probably not supose to put a 35 on the rear door but I weighed my 33 and my 35 and there was only 4kg difference ( 38kg-42kg ). Now I have seen a lot of Patrols with 33 and a highlift jack on rear door together and thats seem acceptable and thats gota weigh heeps more than a 35.Ill look at making a swing away carrier but till then this is how Im rolling, plus I just got too much stuf on my plate at the moment and I have to have a spare somewhere.

So with new rear bar the 35 would not fit on as it was to low hense the need to fab a custom wheel carrier 50mm higher.

Oh and you can see the thingy that you sit the wheel on when your putting the wheel up I made that bit out of stianless steel thinking its going to get the paint scratched of it during use.

have you noticed that the tyre gets in the way of the important bits that need to be lit (as in closer to the back of the car) i build somthing similar, but could never get the right angle to give me proper vision with those lights, always felt i needed more height, such as coming down from roof racks etc?

Thats right the tyre does cast a shadow on the ground behind the drivers side wheel area, I was going to put the lights into the rear bar but figured they would get cacked in mud and be usless. I havent had the chance to try them out yet I might try a smaller light under the tyre somewhere if needed.
I have noticed though that the lights shine on top of the tyre which is quiet glary to look out the back window not that I can see out of it anyway.
I am on the hunt for a reversing camera I like the ones that have 2 cameras .

How did you attach the flares mate?

The rubber was 100mm wide and I left 75mm sticking out so was able to screw 25mm threw the lip that is folded in around the guard.
I used galv self tapping screws with a washer type flange around the top.

I serched and found a pic of the inside, you can see there is an extra piece not shown in the first lot of photoes that goes straight up above the rear doors as there is a flat section there to screw it to. There is a large cavity between the inside roof line and the outside shell so its not a problem to put screws in there.

The last pic shows a small bracket which is holding the pod up against the roof.

Custom front tube bar
Custom tube rear bar

Snorkle
18 switches in dash and console for various things
7 switches in the rear
9x 12volt outlets
Roof speaker pod

Shelf on rear big door
Reverse camera at rear
Reverse camera LH side

6mm rubber wheel arch flairs

Hey Ray, i finally got the bar fitted:)

Im heading out to the farm tomorrow to start tracing in a new 4wd track. The existing little tracks are good to go. Head out if ya want mate. Nothing massive but a good area to have a play.
Ive got a big party happening next weekend so the idea is to trace in a new track tomorrow so that it gets nice and worn in when the hordes come next weekend lol.
The offer is there, ill be heading out around 10
