just seen some led head lights so im guessing they are sealed. so thought of all the dinosaur drivers on here who need sealed headlights. its from aussie 4wd patrol gq on fb. seems that this bloke joe baunach is selling them.

just takin the piss I miss my gq very sad the day I sold it and still as sad now

i like my old cars my new car is my mav. its only 25 years old. nothing i say is said in seriousness, i love taking the piss
but the head lights are pretty dull. but i'm coming from 35w hid's, so am looking for an alternative to mounting the 6 100w spots i have in the shed

I have HID headlights love them , think the jury is still out on LED headlights.
Yes they give a nice white light but when they give distance then I'll look at them.
A few mates have them and have removed them in favour of a normal globe set up

td what sort of distance are you looking for on led spots as I have the new ipf leds and I get 400metres don't need more than that.and I had hid spots before sure they were good but I think instant light compared to hids is a lot better

hid low beam not too bad but hid spots. not so sure as they take time to warm up... some quicker than others but still i'm leaning toward a led light bar. just a low beam issue cant tell if they are on or not
i'm looking around, not in a rush cos the mav isn't yet rego'ed and will pass as soon as i finish the rear bar. which i'm fitting a 6 inch light bar to for a reverse light so if the gives good light i'm thinking led headlights might be ok, just need a spot or two for distance, what i want is a brighter low beam.

I put the crystal headlights in my gq they are brighter specially with a set of ipf fatboys. but as for splashing them they are not sealed so that will work for you if your not river crossing

Led headlights still have a bit more advancements required to get them into the same range as a well setup hid arrangement and I'm not talking about just sticking hid bulbs in your existing lights.
Speaker led headlights are still probably the best option out there for a sealed 7" replacement headlight but this is reflected in their cost.

I really really dislike my HID headlights, can't see nowt with them due to having to angle them down due to dazzling oncoming cars........ have bought some new semi sealed H4s......... If I had the coin I'd probably look at something like Micks projector HIDs

Gotta dislike HID's fitted to old cars. What are the drivers thinking? "Haha!! I'll dazzle everyone, and they'll think I have more power!!!" Pffftt! Theirs a 60 series around my area, blinds me every morning. Horrible headlights. :)

I've still got LED cooled inserts in the Mav. absolute woftam. good on low beam, useless on high beam. imaging was woeful. vanilla inserts are a compromise. wrong focal length, diffusion is incorrect and although leds won't scatter like unprojected HIDs, it's still a lottery.

I tested 7" sealed beams last year and although an effective light, the model I had required a half bucket parabolic for mounting. PITA to mount in GQ's and requires mods to the 2nd skin - esp on the LHS. not worth the effort. I went to the effort of purchasing half mount frames to retro fit but even then it was not worth the effort - esp as they will never pass a roadworthy under current ADR's.

on another note and without wanting to seem like a princess - LEDs or HIDs in a GQ will earn you a canary. it doesn't matter whether the lights are ADR compliant individually, you will fail an inspection as they won't pass inspection as soon as they're mounted on the vehicle. HIDs will definitely fail inspection on a GQ if the inspector is doing their job. (the mav is basically a mobile spare parts truck for the shorty now, so hardly gets driven)

the truklites and JWS's that are appearing on new trucks are certified for use on those trucks - they won't pass a retro fit inspection on older trucks.

you can install them and they'll work but if you ever get pulled up by some finicky plod or vehicle inspector you will get done.

again, it doesn't matter whether the individual lights are certified and RHD passed in the UK or Japan - they will not pass an in-vehicle inspection if the engineering authority is doing their job. The ADR's are about in vehicle approval - not about component compliance in a factory test environment.

Hi all
I have the LED globes in my patrol GQ patrol with the clear lens and I like them and find them to work well
Yes there is not a lot of difference between low and high beam but the light bar fixes that but when out bush doing a night run that's when they come into there own.
I got them from J Car electronic in a H4 size and are a simple plug and play nothing hard at all and find to work well.

the trucklite led head lights are awesome drive two older western stars with them ..... never got hasseled by the RMS inspectors or plod about them .....
i run a light bar and ipf spotties the light bar gives good light close and to the sides then the ipf's get the longer distance love them.....

something a little less aggressive. Im not convinced LED headlights are there
just yet. My HID have burnt the reflective material inside the head light and
I hardly ever drive at night, most damage was done doing early morning runs.
Can I get thoughts on ppl with LED headlights on what they think now they've
had them for a while,, TIA

just put halogens back in, at least you know they'll work. and for the limited amount of driving you do, why go to the extra expense.

yeah when I was first trialling different heat ranges etc etc
I fitted some 90/100 which gave a good light not HID good
buy way better than STD, Plus it saves getting a RW somewhere out bush

I really like LED's for camp lighting, reverse lights, cab lights and such.........
BUT
It is very hard/impossible to get 3500k or even 4200k lights. Mostly they are 5000k or higher light output, which is terrible for fog, wet weather, spotting animals, glare, road sign reflection, and generally being a pain to every other oncoming motorist.

After messing around with LED's and HID's, I've gone back to some Hella 1058hd semi sealed units running simple 90/100w H4 halogen globes.
They give a nice strong yellowish light, and even though the lumens don't rank as high as the blue/violet HID's and LED's, you can see more hazards and obstacles in harsh conditions without being blinded by your own reflected glare from road signs.

When they start making LED's with 3500k output, and they can be reliable - without burning out if they get too hot, or too dusty, or too wet , or HID's frying out, slow starting, popping ballast resistors, or not coming up to full output - I'll reconsider, but for now I'd rather have USABLE lumens that aren't a pain to everyone else, that dependably turn on and off, and when they blow I can pick up a replacement anywhere for under $50.

The Hella 1058hd's are a heavy duty version of the 7" semi sealed with thicker toughened glass and designed to handle higher heat and thermal shock from being dunked in cold water when hot. If you are worried about water and mud ingress, fit a thin "O" ring or gasket between the H4 globe and the housing.

Like you and Clunk have suggested Ill go back to some 90/100 H4 globes
