View Full Version : Melbourne Cup Weekend (31 Oct - 3 Nov 2015) - Vic High Country Trip

Bacho86
19th August 2015, 11:19 PM
Hey Guys,

Just planning ahead, thought I would start up a thread to gauge interest in a trip to the High Country for Cup Weekend and discussion on what areas / tracks to tackle....Or even if anyone else already has a trip in mind that I've missed?

My thoughts so far include driving up on Friday night to camp at good launching place into the bush like Licola or Sheepyard Flat etc with an aim to be back to Melbourne early Tuesday afternoon.

Thoughts?

Blue rag is awesome! It's been my #1 to see forever.
Mods are going good. It's in parts and pieces now, so will be ready to play soon. Definitely ready before November.

I was hoping the if we can get far enough "away into the bush" we'd avoid the majority of ppl, but I guess it will be difficult on the first opening weekend.

Any other thoughts or hitlist on tracks / sites to see?

If you head Mansfield way that weekend i know Thursday is the latest you want to go to secure a decent campsite. We ( my family) were thinking on going to Sheepyards, Fry's or a site along the Howqua somewhere.
Actually id be keen for here anyways. Theres a track im keen to see the other end of where BA's brother inlaw dragged his Paj down. Then i had to drag him back up.

I wasn't around for last years trip - on NP trips do you normally have a base camp and do day trips from there or move drive and camp at a different place every time to cover more ground?

Geoff and I did once, first night at O'Tooles, then we went into Licola, down billy goats and camped at Talbotville, then next day we went and did blue rag and finally camped at the Dargo pub. That was a good trip

Yeh my preference is normally travelling trips as well - you can cover more ground and are less restricted with where you go. But agree it makes it harder with larger groups finding suitable camp sites etc

Perhaps numbers and level of interest will dictate this trip

I like a base camp so I can bring the camper for the family. A traveller I fine but I would do that in the Oz tent I reckon. Bugger towing the camper through the high country. The camper is designed to handle it but it's just stress on gear.

Speaking of this, somebody should always stay behind. Last time we base camped at Howqua and went to do the Jamieson slate mine loop, we came back to find several blokes "casually" walking past our campsite on the river. Mind you, their supposed walking trail lead nowhere...
Especially if that weekend will be a busy one.

Anyone else that I'm missing? Possible a group size of 6 - 8 vehicles which is a good size.

Is the general consensus for a travelling trip or a base camp for those that are likely to attend?

Yeh, maybe I'm too keen to lock things in and it's a bit early for most ppl by the look of it! Lol

I'm happy with travelling or base camp as well, maybe we could base camp for 2 nights and travelling the other night/s as option to cover more ground.

I've done Butcher country / New Caledonia area entering via Licola twice this year. Very nice country , with great views and challenging tracks. But am keen to explore other areas to the north perhaps?

Hey sory mate been a little distracted lately with work and currently a trip away for this weekend, but Still Definitely keen for this trip.

I mentioned in another thread about doing The deddick trail which is (I think) further over east towards orbost way, over the 4 days.

Not sure how much interest there would be though cause it's a bit further travel involved... Thoughts?

Yep well I guess the original idea of this thread was more an EOI for a cup weekend trip that I wanted to throw out there. No plans or anything at that stage -- and perhaps thats why it faltered.

Deddick Trail was only something that came up in discussions, but doing some research agree it may be a little bit too long / extreme for most.

Back to the drawing board then. Perhaps a Licola / Dargo / Blue Rag trek would be better. I'm going away this long weekend, so I'll have a look over some maps and post something up next week with some more details

Hope your son gets better soon.

X2 Mate, family comes first bud.

As Rusty already said, family comes first mate ! Hope your little boy gets well.

Thanks for the kind words fellas, he got out from hospital yesterday . Docs couldn't exactly confirm what was wrong or causing the abdominal pains; either a viral infection, early stages of appendicitis or maybe intestinal colic or something!! Lol it's like a choose your adventure, but at least his pain is down and fever is under control.

BA - the other area that was mentioned by Hodge as a potential interest point was going up to Blue Rag track (assuming it opens up for cup weekend). Thanks mate.

Glad to hear everything is on the up buddy. Nothing worse than kids being unwell, especially your own, watching them and wishing somehow You'd bear the pain for them ...

Okay so I was just talking to Nic on the phone and he is planning on leaving Sydney on Friday after work and driving through the night to meet somewhere. Which means that we would be meeting Saturday early morning.

If you head down the Monaro highway what time do you reckon roughly you could get to Bairnsdale? I could meet you around there and head into Dargo with you on Friday night.

google maps says about 8 hours from my work, that would put me in about 11 pm as i would leave early but have to stop to pick up chrisso and will need some petrol stops. is this (https://www.google.com.au/maps/dir/Woolooware+NSW/Bairnsdale+VIC/@-35.8737948,147.8410054,8z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x6b12c7fd2d6664 c5:0x5017d681632d0f0!2m2!1d151.1449706!2d-34.0458621!1m5!1m1!1s0x6b2f7ed232c6e60d:0x50579a43 0a0dc60!2m2!1d147.6317185!2d-37.8245772?hl=en) really the quickest way?

Oh no I didn't realise he was coming too! I might just stay home then... Haha!
So let's say Bairnsdale just after midnight? Which would mean Dargo at about 2am roughly. I'm cool with that =)
