Hi I have a 1997 GQ Patrol 2.8 Turbo deisel.... The problem I am have is one morning I started the beast and the techo went from left to right 3 times then died also the light for the glow plugs does not come on anymore nor does it make that click over noise if ya know what i mean.. I checked the fuse box in the drivers side kick panel and checked the control unit thats located just below the fuse box i thinks its called the ecu and the patrol runs alittle bit hotter but not much. I have read all the ecu problems on this forum but with no resolve. I have phoned nissan and they want $1,400 for the ecu and wreckers want $550. I am also wondering it is the ecu... I also can take pics of the board of the ecu if anyone can tell by a pic if its unfixable.. :1087:

GQ 2.8 turbo diesel has a mechanical injector pump - it's not computer controlled. The ECU you are looking at may be the glow control unit. I would be getting either an auto electrician or a diesel specialist to check the glow plug operation before you go spending big dollars on something that may not be faulty.

It could be that you glow system is working normally (is the engine hard to start when cold?) and that it is just the dash indicator light that is not working - you may have a faulty instrument cluster.

The control unit may also be turbo timer unit if fitted with turbo.

thanks for the info..... It happened all at once tacho spiked left to right and glow plug indicator stopped working along with the glow plug click noise when turning the ignition on. so from that day on every morning when starting the car it kicks over about 8 times before starting when it use to start first go every go no problem.

That ECU may just be the glow control unit, in which case it is a necessary though somewhat over priced component.

Going by Sean's description of hard starting it sounds like there is a fault in the glow circuit somewhere, but I would be getting it checked out to confirm which part is at fault before just buying expensive parts.

Check all the earth points you can find to make sure they have a clean contact with the body/chassis.

Gday Sean check if the manual on the forum for a GQ covers the 2.8.

GQ manual only covers TB42 and TD42. We are still trying to find a manual that covers GQ RD28.
GU manual covers RD28 but there are differences between the 2 models.

If Water has leaked in through the Windscreen and damaged the electronics would not Insurance cover any Repairs

Don't know that's it sh!t as such, but nowhere near as detailed as the workshop manual - more for the basics.

Hey Sean, I'm in sydney and have a GQ 2.8 like yours.
I have the Gregorys Manual with the special reference section for the 2.8. I'm always tinkering with my truck and have some pretty handy electronics connections too.

PM me if you would like a hand and a working GQ for reference. More than once I've wanted another truck standing by so I could see how to put mine back together again...

Good luck with it anyway.

Cheers, Lachie

Hey Sean,
I've recently had exactly the same problem with my 96' GQ 2.8TD . We had a bit of rain too and my driver side windscreen started leaking since i could feel it on my right leg - anyhoo, my taco started playing up and the glow plug light aswell - they seemed to work in unison but now they have both completely stopped.
I'm not having any trouble starting as yet, but I'm desperate for some advice!

Did you manage to find a way to resolve this problem??
Your help would be greatly appreciated!
Neal.
