View Full Version : Swing away bike carrier?

I have been looking for a solution to carry my mountainbike during the big lap. The roof is no option so I looked at racks that go into the hitch. Some racks allow you to lower the bikes when not in use but they are often not offroad (or if they are then they are close to 800). Ideally I would have something swing away or on the spare tyre (but not sure if it holds the weight during offroad).

Did anybody made something themself or can recommend something?

Im current looking for the same sort of thing but to carry 5 bikes. Trouble is though, the ones that slide into the hitch may well not clear your spare tyre. So I've been looking at the ones that fit straight onto the tow ball and get an extended hitch receiver.

I cant remember if its thule or rhino but one of them do one that attaches to the to the spare wheel (carries 2 bike) which is offset, so centres the bikes but its not recommended for offroad use.

One rack i look the like of is Buzzrack Buffalo, i think they do a 2 and 4 bike carrier. Look pretty robust and can get them for either hitch or tow ball i believe, the 4 bike version is around 400, not sure on the 2 bike version though

The ideal one I found is this one: http://www.thule.com/en/au/products/carriers-and-racks/bike-carriers/hitch-mounted-bike-carriers/thule-apex-swing-4-bike-9027-_-1260560
but its for 4 bikes and expensive (I am only using it for 1 year).

Would be easy enough to make one but not sure
on legallities with number plate , brake lights etc.
I had a design years ago for a spare tyre.

draw what you want and Im sure any engineering shop would whip one up
the way you want it.
As for a light board a fence paling, some led's and 5 core flex should be ok
cheaper too

got to get me one of those "fat" bikes
If you design one for yourself over engineer it
you'll thank yourself later on
