I've been following Deadly GU's build thread and thought id have a shot at a set of sliders since my last outing punched the side step into the bottom of the front door.
Sent a pm to Deadly GU for a few steel sizes and off I went.
Consists of 32NB med pipe, 50x50x3 shs and 50x10 flat for the brackets.
I don't have a bender so i used 32NB 90deg elbows instead. I wanted 45deg elbows but they weren't in stock in that size so i had to make do.
I'll stab away each arvo and hopefully have them on soon.

It's too hot here to do too much today but at least got the rails welded to the square section. You can't see it from this angle but they are welded on at a slight upwards angle.
I need to put the two little braces in and then I'll start on the mounts.

looking very neat I take it the 50 x 50 is the slider component of it
to protect the patrol sills, I likey a lot lol

Yea the 50x50 will sit directly under the sill its self and the pipe section will act to protect the panel under the doors (which is still probably classed as the sill). I didn't make them massive like some guys do so they won't be much of a side step compared to some.

been saying for a while most just have pipe steps on an angle ala Cheesy style
what you have are actual sliders good design nice and strong too.

In you're first pic you're showing 6 short lengths of steam pipe. I assumed these were to be notched and welded between the SHS and the external steam pipe but that doesn't seem to be the case because you've welded the ends already.

No the long pieces are to go from the 50x50 to the chassis brackets with a few support gussets later. I have shorter pieces that I have cut at 15 deg to go in between. It was painful to fit the small bits but it worked out well.

Im noting all measurements down because im going to replicate for a mate later on. Every piece of steel except for the 50x50 has been cut longer so i have room to play. More expensive in the long run but think of it as a prototype.
I recommend anyone with a little welding experience to jump in and diy your patrol.

Just a thought do you think the 50 x 50 is big enough for an air tank,
might hold more than you think, as I said just a thought.
still looking good lol

Now your talking. Bloody great idea. If my calculations are correct, it should hold 3.3 litres each side.

I still don't understand why you welded the ends first before fitting those spacers in. You had to either force them in or have a sloppy fit before welding..

They slipped straight into place because of the 15 deg angle. It would have been an issue it was straigh.

This gives you an idea of the finished product. Need to drill a few more holes for the front mount and rear u bracket, pray for a clear arvo tomorrow and hopefully at least tack it in position.
Before anyone says anything. No the pipes are not welded in position. I just sat them there.

do you think you need to 45 the front to stop it digging in .?
Just throwing stuff out there,

Oh yea thats on the cards. I'll be 45ing the bottom 2/3rds of the end, not the whole end if you know what I mean.
I prefer that look and less sharp angles.

I left the ends of the 50x50 a little longer so i can trim them when its in position to get the right look.

Yeah anything with a leading edge to help it "slide" will work good stuff

Out of curiosity what wall thickness did you go on the shs?

mjr350

50x50x3mm. Hopefully up to the task.

3mm is what tjm use and I bent them up badly, how hard do you drive ?

50x50x3mm. Hopefully up to the task.

Yea that's on the light side for "sliders"...
Be ok for wording off bits and pieces.
Add more middle bits, that will add a bit more strength.

I dont go hard at all. Its a work vehicle through the week so i can't afford to kill it. More piece of mind just in case plus nothing an angle grinder, press and welder cant fix if need be.

Bit of a mock fit to get the distance from the chassis rails. The 50x50 will sit dead centre under the lip of the sill.

The drivers side is almost complete. Just need to support it at its final resting spot and tack.
The biggest issue at the moment is dragging my G size argoshield cylinder out onto the driveway so I can tack it because I haven't made a trolley for the new welder yet.

An advantage of using the 50mm square hollow section is that you can now easily add a 50mm wide flat bar strengthening strap if you think the 3mm won't do the job..

threedogs
27th March 2015, 09:33 AM
I like it and and dont forget the grip tape, and it'll hurt like hell when you slip off them and bang your shin.
The 3mm strap is a good idea a bit less weight than going up to 6mm wall plus the price as well

Two great ideas.
They're all welded up and looking sweet.
I'm buying the gussets tomorrow, finishing the ends and sourcing some plate for the bottom at some stage.
How thick should the plate be? Is 1.6mm to thin?

Well they're on. Been on for a while but forgot to post.

They fell straight into place even after all the support gussets welded in. I did prepare for a little bit of warping but it was minimal.
Didn't end up plating in the bottom. I was running out of time and steel shops don't open on weekends up here as of last weekend.
100mm x 3mm flat will fit easily so don't have to cut from a sheet if I feel the need one day.
I'll grab some pics when I get a chance.

If u want 45 bends just cut a 90 in half that's what we do on the job
