View Full Version : March ‘15 Photo Comp. “Things that make you go ‘Bugger’”

Cuppa
4th March 2015, 12:34 PM
This month’s competition topic has been chosen by our February winner Throbbinhood

His choice is
“Things that make you think, or say, ‘Bugger’”. We’ve all been there & done that ourselves, or have witnessed other’s stuff ups & mishaps & breakdowns, but have we recorded them for posterity, so we can have a good laugh about them at a later date. I reckon we might have, so that’s what we are looking for in this month’s comp

Good luck all, & thanks Throbbinhood

Ps. Please read though the pink bit below if you haven’t done so yet. Ta.

Monthly Photo Competition guidelines (Please read)

* Each month a new competition thread will commence & all forum members are invited to submit their photos .

* Maximum of three entries per person.

* Multiple entries should be made in separate posts

* Each entry should consist of a single photograph & a short description only

* Comments pertinent to entries are encouraged, but please do not use this thread to engage in banter

* Photos MUST have been taken by the member posting the photos or members of their party.

* Any photo which has been a winner will not be eligible for re-entry in any future competition.

* Please do not post photos that are not entries in the competition.

* The winner of the month's competition gets to choose the following month's competition topic.

* All members are encouraged to vote for the photos they think should win. This will be done by pressing the 'Thanks' button located underneath each post. Toward the end of the month the date & time of competition closure will be announced. Following this time the thread will be locked & the 'Thanks' counted to determine the winner.

* 'Thanks' may be added or withdrawn at any time during the month up until the competition is closed.
You are welcome to thank as many different posts as you wish!

* In the event of a tied first place I will add a casting vote, except in circumstances where my entry is one of the tied ones, in which case I will withdraw my entry.

*Inappropriate photos eg, sexual, racist, violent etc are unacceptable & should not be posted.

Thanks for your cooperation

Oh Bugger! After about 35,000kms, far too many (for this non off road trailer) of which were many were on corrugated dirt roads it was never designed for, the chassis rail gave up the fight. Getting it repaired in Darwin was a challenge with most places chasing the lucrative mining dollar.

Oh Bugger & double bugger! Not again! What else can go wrong? (My posture says it all).
Just a day & 100kms after we had had the replacement motor fitted in Katherine (7 weeks!) we reached Pine Creek & stopped to get fuel. MrsTea say’s “I hate to mention this but there’s oil pouring out underneath the bus”. The rear main seal had been improperly fitted by the Melbourne motor supplier. Just another stage in a long saga of mechanical disaster a long way from home.

1 of my biggest bugger moments happened back in 2009 when I was cooking a BBQ with potatoes in a deep frying pan filled with oil on top of my camping gas bottle ring which was sitting on the ground next 2 the BBQ, I turned around for some reason and bumped the handle causing the boiling hot oil 2 spill out all over my ankle. Put up with the pain and blisters for a few weeks before going to docs who sent me to my local hospital which sent me to the special burns unit at Concord hospital for a holiday.

Below pic is of where they took the skin from my leg and grafted it onto my ankle.

First up. Great topic.
So my first pic is work related. Sorry.
Conversation went something like this.
'Copy workshop. Got a problem'
'Ow yer. Bring it in'
'Ok, just retrieving broken bit'
'Ooooooooooooook'

November 2008 I was working night shift in a local Steel foundry, 10minutes before knock off things start to go pretty wrong for me. Pretty sure I said bugger, among other choice words. Spent 3 months in hospital and 13 months off work.

Yep aircon. On the bus when we bought it. Copper pipe fractured on first corrugated road. Since removed. Was just a caravan park ‘magnet’ (for 240v power) whilst it worked.

Run out or a spill when transferring to the ladle? Would have hurt bad been told told a few stories of this happening to guys at work and other foundries a small splash burning through pant and shirts are bad enough let alone getting trapped in your boot

It was a run out, we had previously had core boxes shooting out the back of the moulds, so I was off to the side of the mould, right where it decided to run out. Probably wouldn't have been as bad if I had been wearing normal boots, the smelter boots seemed to contain the steel pretty well unfortunately.

Plenty of splash burns from cleaning out ladles, seems to 'bounce' down your skin under your shirt. Always amusing watching someone trying to catch it before it enters their pants ;)

dave97
6th March 2015, 01:18 PM
I was amused watching our scrap cutter melt through his apron chaps and crotch of his pants last week, I've super heated my steel cap a few times as a fettler ended up hoping around with the boot off looking for a puddle to cool it in.

Can imagine how bad smelter boots would contain it. If you don't mind who were you working for?

similar to that we had some chips boiling away in a large cast iron pan on a gas ring running from a 9kg bottle.
A mate flissed as two crickets picked up the fry pan with both hands, burnt all the skin amd muscle away from his thumb to his little finger.

Broken down about a quarter of the way up Eucla Pass. Had to reverse the vehicle and trailer down to the turn off for the Old Telegraph Station. Found out it was the Dual Mass Fly Wheel. All up, it cost around $6000 for towing to Ceduna and a new DMF. Better there than stuck out in the desert I guess.

there were pics floating around but this was over 30 years ago, took the same guy to Dartmouth dam camping
campfire blaring getting late turned in, wake to find the guy tried to stand up over balanced put his hands out to
break his fall, sadly it was the fire which had been blazing for 6 or so hours, this time burnt again very badly.
Later he died not from fire but for hitch hiking up the Hume and got hit by a truck at the Heathcote turn off

My bugger moment. I was being a "safety watch it", by removing nails from some treated pine. A stubborn nail caused my hand to rub up against a long bolt. The bugger moment was inside the house, when I found our first aid scissors were blunt. I had to grip sections of dead skin and rip them off, so I could clean out the rust and rat shit from the cut.
