View Full Version : How to stop under a mattress?

My kids sleep on stretchers with a thin mattress on top. Each morning the underside of the mattress is damp. I know why but stopping it would be nice.
Would a thin piece of plastic between the stretcher and mattress do the job?

If its raining we throw plastic over the top of our matress and it stops that clammy moist feeling it gets, it could work

that will protect the stretcher, make sure the mattress's are completely dry to start of with.

That's no different to mattress on floor of tent, needs airflow under mattress to stop or maybe a polatec blanket under mattress. Either way it needs airing every morning, the jayco did the same thing under the beds.

I found that self inflating matress helped stop the moisture between the stretcher and matress

We put foam floor mats (like these (http://www.anaconda.com.au/Product/Camp-and-Hike/Foam-Floor-Mats-4-Pack?gclid=CJKnsO_Kj8MCFRcGvAodCIAAlw)) under our mattress in the camper, seems to have stopped the moisture problem we where having. If you have some, give it a try.

Haha. I have a few on the ground right next to me. I will try it out tonight.
The moisture wasnt too bad last night but on cold nights they get pretty wet and the kids wake up wet themselves.

Best solution is under mattress mesh available from caravan shops. Needs an air gap. Definitely don’t use a plastic sheet it will make things worse.

Moisture is sweat with nowhere to go. We all lose moisture overnight. Circulating air under the mattress allows it to evaporate & not build up.

This is the sort of mesh I mean. Not cheap though, but lasts forever. http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=53816&stc=1

An alternative is to re-cover the stretchers with a suitable open weave material which is not waterproof.

On the matress or between the mattress and stretcher?

On the mattress, kids can pee while they sleep and it won't soak through

we uses these on the kids beds at home, for those just in case moments

I saw stretchers the other day with mesh instead of canvas for the base I'll try and find them
I thought it was just to let sand fall through

You could be right in your interpretation Clunk ........... but I don’t think so. Guess we’ll have to wait for Mudski to stop enjoying himself to find out.

You knob clunk. They get wet from the mattress getting wet underneath. The kids are passed weeing themselves. Mind you. I wouldn't mind using that sheeting for myself.

Popcorn... Popcorn...
Damn it, where the F did I put me Popcorn...

Anyway, Plastic won't help, indeed will probably be worse.
Anything that will let air circulate and draw the moisture out to the side and away is the go.
The best stuff by a long way for hard surfaces like Vans and Boats is that thingy Cuppa posted up but not sure how you will go with that on a stretcher.

i dont think there is really much you can do mate? isnt it caused by your body heat? in my trailer there is one exposed metal panel which has the outside world on it and its always soaked in the morning, i think its because your breathing out condensed air which cools rapidly on a different surface, i cant imagine its much different on a matress that is raised off the ground in an enclosed space? only thing that might help would be somthing to increase airflow around the bed?

He used to be a shiny nail until he used a stretcher!

If you use the under mesh make sure it’s wide enough to stick out a bit either side of the mattress, possibly with some newspaper under it.
