View Full Version : Have I lost everything or just a part? (automatic hub MK)

Hi,

I have attached 2 photos I just took from my car.

I just don't know what I really lost driving on the highway.......I think I lost my driver's side automatic hub.

I heard a very light spring popping sound (really it was hardly anything), and the result was the photo. I have gone back to look for 'it' but coulnt find it.....

I have searched an automatic hub 1984 MQ/MK from the wreckers, and it was extremely difficult to find one. But I did! I have to drive 2 hours to get it though, which I am happy to do (NOT with the patrol :)), but I hope I am getting the right part. I specifically asked for the MQ automatic hub, and the guy says it is waiting for me in a plastic bag for $65 to be picked up.

So:

What have I lost to what extent? Is this normal or should I expect further problems? I checked the screws/bolts on the left one and they seem to be tight. So god knows what happened.....

1) Can I be pretty sure that the $65 automatic hub sourced is what I need?
2) how long should it take for a mechanic/non mechanic to put it on?
3) any tips on where or who would want and can do that? (as in good mechanics inner north Brisbane etc.)
4) Can I drive with my car to the mechanic without probs (I already did for 2 hours driving home, so I guess that's a yes)

5) Anything else I should know?

Please enlighten me about this part.

Thanks
Henriette

oh, thanks. Links works for me, but that is probably because I am the owner of the page :)

Yes you are right. I did upload in the intro. It is just not working. Keeps giving me an error.

Is there a way to upload photos in a quick reply? Or only throught editing? Maybe you know what to do? Thanks.

you will probable find the pic is 2 big, there are file size limitations, try resizing the photo before trying to upload it.

you can add a photo in quick reply by using the picture frame Icon "Insert image"

Yep looks like you lost your locking hub, It's a bit hard to see if you still have the lock nuts on your stubb axle but if ya looking for some new hubs maybe try this link.

Hi gec

Thanks for your reply. I know now I lost the whole hub assembly. There still is this little snap ring sitting on there.
I am really sorry for my non knowledge, but what are my lock nuts on my stubb axle, and how do I check that? Maybe someone can point me in the direction of a picture? Sometimes I just don't get the English terminology, that's all.

Do you think it is wise for me to get the one automatic hub for $65, having it fitted (is that easy?), or way better of for buying manual ones that I got quoted for $320 including fitting.....

thanks

Hey Jet. Personally I would look at manual hubs but that is just my opinion. As for the auto hub, as long as it is the correct one and you get the bolts with it, it will be fine. You could even do this job your self.

Oh, that sounds good. I think I will try that option first (just get the auto hub and make sure I get the bolts!!!). Seller told me everything was there, although I don't know what 'everything' means.....I will take the risk and drive the 2 hours to get it. So you think there is not more missing? I could take another photo up close and different angle if that helps? See post before about possibly missing the lock nuts on the stub axle (I figured out what that is....:))

Can I safely drive to a workshop 30 minutes away? I have her booked in for a service anyway on wednesday.

She sounds like an old VW bus (sort of rattling on acceleration). I have had that before (2 yrs ago). Back then they completely redid (machining) the exhaust manifold and problem was solved. Also gave her a lot of power back that I felt she had lost (like I feel again now). I do know there is a leak in the exhaust somewhere, maybe that is it.....? anyone?

Thanks so much for your help so far guys!!! I cannot bear the thought of my truck no longer being worth fixing up.....what will I do then????????????
Just found out through this forum that she is actually an MK not an MQ, and I am the proud owner of an original wide wheel pack :)

Finly owner (Tim) lives at Tamborine and has a few old MK's sitting in his yard and I know they still have the hubs on the front axles, so if you need any parts he's your man.
You can drive 30 minutes more without the hub on, but make sure your workshop repacks (regreases) the wheel bearings for you.

It sounds like your exhaust has worked it's way loose and your turbo may not be getting full boost which would explain the drop in power.

Looking at the pic you have there, all is intact. It looks as it is only the hub has let go. Bit unusual though.

I lost a few bolts from the free wheeling hubs on my first GU, luckily I saw it in time and didn't loose the hub.

And the funny thing is.....I didnt do a lot of hard work or anything. And I check my wheels regularly, nothing was wrong. The other side is tight as....
And this happened on the highway! Which might be explainable because of higher vibrations than 4wdriving? But I guess we will never know why. Was even a miracle I heard it happening and stopped to check what it was. It was then when I found out it was the hub. I even called the NRMA (I was still in NSW just, and didnt know if I could safely drive home, which I did in the end) and he helped me look for it since my friend had seen it rolling towards the middle green part of the highway. I can tell you I was frustrated losing something like that so easily! Ive gone through worse like when the car stops or something. This is expensive....and it just happens for no particular reason. Just bad luck...

Thanks so much for your help. Tim - if you see this, I am trying to PM you, or try me...

OK Jet I have Pm'd you. But for all you nuts out there, apparently it's a fault that hubs on older patrols come loose for no reason. Suggested fix is the locktite bolts. I have never had auto hubs and think manual are probably tried and tested by all makes of 4WD for many years.

Well all fixed now you will all have to wait for Henriette to put up the photos of the fix. Tony and I repaire her MK with hub I sold her.
Labour was done in the spirit of the forum........at the price of Henriette being able to help someone from the forum oneday, with what she knows.

I think Tim put the photos in general banter. Maybe he could repost them here when he gets time.
