View Full Version : Warn High mount install into ARB bar

Hi guys, been slowly pottering along with rebuilding and installing of my high mount (Warn M8274) into my ARB deluxe winch bar (lowmount bar). . .

49026

Pretty shocking photo, but this is how the winch looked when I got it, half covered in pine needles. (Always regret not taking good photos LOL)

49027

It was pretty sludgy inside, but once cleaned up everything was in good nick.

I wont go into too much detail with the rebuild but found this dudes videos very helpful.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXLnAqgRpFE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AetCZJxvNdU

The only main drama I ran into was the brake assembly was seized onto the shaft. It took a lot of soaking with WD40, then I had to clamp the brake assembly in the vice and hit the shaft end, which worked pretty well.

49028

Painted and ready for reassembly with new brake kit and service kit. Even polished the aluminium with the Dremel, which looks the goods.

Re assembly was pretty straight forward apart from getting the inner and outer brake assembly's the wrong way round. After friging round for a bit and chatting to Daz on the phone it suddenly clicked. (The're different!!)

Welded a tag on the drum to make changing rope easy, and also stronger than the old crimp and rivet.

49029

Put it all together with a new 6HP motor and sealed it up with ultra copper. As the motor sits upside down you have to be careful to seal up the drain hole thingy that Warn like to put in.
(Sorry, haven't got any photos of the winch assembled.)

Time for the bar to come off and pull off the TigerZ. I couldn't free spool the Tigerz by hand (always been s#!t even after rebuilding), then the solenoids were just clicking, so had to hit the control box with a hammer to get it going. Good riddance TigerZ!!!!

49031

Then I forgot that I never got round to putting on the new door hinges I bought after the Simpson trip, so while the grill is coming off (new chrome grill to go on) off come the guards.

49033

New hinges and a good chance to give the door jams a good clean. There were also a few bolts broken off for the guards, so a perfect chance to get all these sorted too.

49034

Old

49035

New.

New ones are great!! Ready for some more bloody corrugations!!

Guards back on and new chrome grill. Used the "special" clips for the grill with the screw in the middle - soooo much better!!! (Sorry no photos)

49036

To get away without cutting the grill for the highmount to sit the middle tube of the bar needs to be cut to the level of the front plate. Mounting the winch further back was not an option for me because of the front mount intercooler. (Not enough space)

49037

Need to cut a bit out of the top plate as well. Can't really see it in this photo, but the top plate that's hiding behind the middle tube.

49038

Welded some 5mm plate to where it mounts up so the gearbox on the winch clears the folded section in the middle of the bar.

49039

Someone had previously hacked the bar, so welded in some plate and also put in a couple of corners as the offset fairlead I had didn't cover the top corners.

49040

49041

Closed up the middle tube.

Time for the old roller fairlead thing to come off.

49042

Before. . .

49043

After

49044

Winch in.

Here you go Rossco...came up a treat!

Ha ha, you beat me to it!!!

Did a bit more frigging around with it this afternoon and got it sorted pretty well. Initially it was very close to intercooler and pushing on the grill into intercooler. I put a couple of big washers each side on the front mounting plate of the bar (the mounts that locate it vertically) and got it pretty good. It's pretty tight but, there's a few ml between the grill now. I'll get some more photos tomorrow, battery was dying and couldn't use flash.

Also the winch is yet to be wired. Planning running an in cab switch and also waterproof switches on the bar with a solid state solenoid under the bonnet. Got a solenoid of Ebay last week but hasn't arrived yet. . . Should be soon hopefully.

Hey mate a quote from my build re the in cab switches mate. Let me know if you can't read the black writing.

In this build i also finished the incab winch control switches too.

I had a setup before but used Narva style rocker swtiches and they are not dust proof and used to jamb on. Not good

I replaced them with these and they are dust proof from super cheap.

The LED lights up when the button is pressed to tell me that there is power there.

The silver button on the steering column is actually a green LED that lights up when i switch on the Winch Isolation switch to light up the switches at night. I also have a white LED marker light over the winch drum linked to this switch for night driving. BONUS!!..

Cheers Daz, have been using your thread for a bit of inspiration, it's been good. Also found some pics of Gary's set up with his spotties mounted on the bar. Have been thinking about mounting of spotties with a highmount, would rather not put them ontop if I can avoid it (stands out a bit and illegal) Looks as if Garys fit in quite well further forward and apart, I know his is a highmount bar tho. Might have a peek on the weekend for some inspiration. . .

Have you got switches up front on yours? (on bar)

Hopefully get a chance to tinker this week, but looking like it's a bit of a busy one. . .

Cheers mate, no I don't have up front switches ut am going to not all some this time when I rewire for 24v in the coming weeks.

I will install them in the side of the head light surround. They work great there.

I used a double throw toggle switch for my in and out which is spring loaded with the middle as off, and a simple single throw for the isolation switch. Up for out and down for in. You can get the little rubber covers that simple screw over them, makes them look neater (imo) and also provides dust resistance etc.

Cheers Sooty, I've got a Carling switch for the cab which I hope works well. Haven't quite got the bar end sorted yet, was thinking some of the ones like Darren's - a couple of momentary on's. I have seen them in the headlight surround before as well, look quite good there.

Solenoid arrived today and looks pretty straight forward to wire up. Has any one got any ideas of a good place to get good cable for the winch, and also terminals that don't require a bloody expensive tool?

I bought a crimping tool off eBay for $60 and am stoked with it mate! Highly recommend buying one. You will get the cable from a good WeldinG shop. 50mm2 at least. I am running 70mm2. I also recommend linking the 2 batteries under the bonnet with a hot wire and isolating switch so you can link them when your winching. Works great.

Go and visit the local sparkie and he will crimp them for you, he would only charge if he was a tight ass! haha

UPDATE!!

Been a bit busy and slack lately but finally got the winch wired up.

After much indecision I decided to go with my original plan and mount the solenoid (solid state) under the bonnet. I originally planned on putting it here but was also thinking about mounting it on the end of the winch motor. The motor bolts line up with the brackets on most solenoids. The advantage of mounting it here is that you need less cable as you only need the positive and negative running from the battery. I however decided to leave it under the bonnet, looks a little neater and also only has a short section of cable that is live all the time.

49741

Winnie managed to sort me out with some cable, lugs and heat shrink. I used 70mm2 cable, which is huge, no chance of loosing any current with this stuff. Used 7m in total and just had enough. I realised we had a crimper at work for stainless balustrading which worked perfect.

49742

49743

49744

49745

This is how much cable I had leftover!!

49746

49747

Wired it up to a two way Carling switch. All wiring was pretty simple really, the new solid state solenoids are a breeze.

49748

Done, time to test. Hooked up the rope and spooled it in, worked a treat. Then went down to the back yard and had a go winching up the hill. The brake wasn't working at all and performance wasn't great, not looking good thought it was time to rebuild again - not happy. But as the sun was going down I realised it was spooling backwards and I had wired in and out the wrong way - result!! That fixed and then re spooled the proper way time to re test. Performance was awesome, the brake is amazing, just feels so solid. Had a go winching up a vertical embankment and it just wanted to go -very happy!! The only downside with the standard high mount is free spool is tough as your spinning the gears up to the motor. I can see why the air free spools would be bloody awesome, maybe Santa will be nice one day :)

Still need wire the buttons on the bar, put in an isolator switch and will also put in a switch to link the batteries through the isolator, however just wanted to get it working at this stage.

Looking good Rossco.

The placement of the solenoid is not ideal bud but will get it done. The most voltage drop is between the solenoid and the motor so the closer the better. Just behind the grill or behind the headlight for the win. I had mine mounted under the washer bottle.

With my 24v setup I will be going on the end of the motor. I will probably set up ABs winch with. The solenoid on the end of the motor too.

With the Freespool, you will find that the "Winch Out" on a Himount is very fast and there is no adverse effects on the winch by winching out so go for it mate. I have my Freespool pinned so winch out. I have just bought an Airfreespool though Shhhhhhhh. I will post a pic here of the pin for you, I took one tonight when I stripped the Himount and front bar off my GQ.

Looking good mate, you will love the Himount.

Caution..... The One Thing that will KILL A HIMOUNT is trying to slow down the winch or stop the run on by trying to spool in the other direction. It will kill the brushes. Get used to it. The run on it predictable. You can't stop it, learn it.

Have fun

The bracket on my Albright solenoid would not mount up to the end of the 6 HP motor under the long bolts, did you have this problem, also reversing the high mount at speed can break teeth off the gears. The easy way is to power out the amount of rope you need whilst standing at bull bar, this keeps the tension on the rope then run up the hill only dragging the rope.

Cheers guys, I did toy with the idea of mounting the solenoid behind the washer bottle which I reckon would work well. Apparently there are smaller bottles available which can make a bit of space, might end up doing this down the track. They do fit on the end of the motor but do need a little grinding to get them to sit flat, also you would need to make sure the bolt holes are sealed up well too.

Agreed with changing direction on the motor to stop run on, this would defiantly not be nice for the motor. It is different in this way to a low mount because everything is spinning a lot more freely, but defiantly manageable. And yes I think I love the highmount!! however there are still room for improvement in the future plenty more mods to do if I get bored. . . one day!!

That is called the "Big Mouth Fairlead and has recently been advertised on ebay. Mine was the prototype and the pic on ebay is of mine. This one is designed for the +76 drum but is a bigger opening also so if the rope ever breaks and needs to be knotted the knot will fit through the fairlead! (This is a pain in the ass). Very exciting.

I got this one off Phil at the 4WDShed and Biders make a standard width one too.

AB you should hit Phil up to come on here as a Vendor Sponsor mate, he is hitting it hard at the moment and i think would be keen. He has a great range and getting bigger every day. He is gearing up to compete in Outback Challenge in a few weeks but he is hitting online in a big way.

Long time coming, but finally finished off the old high mount. . . Well finished for now I guess you can never stop with these things if you want, but anyway pretty happy with it now.

Wired up the isolator, manual switch to the redarc isolator to join the batteries and switches up front on the bar.

62316

62317

Put some led strip lighting under the bar which gets power from the isolator. (May have stolen this idea). . .

I shortened the rope 10m too. 40m is too much and would cause dramas I reckon. Had a go a splicing the off cut for a short extension. Looks pretty good but will have to give it a test soon.
