That is interesting?? that is the first time i have seen inside a portal, thanks for that. It looks like they change your gearing slightly?? is that so?

Got to ask also.. Did you fit these when the car was new or did you just respray the diff housing and seriously detail the car before the pics?? bloody clean mate. Looks great.

The original assemblies fabricated by Mark were 1.4:1, designed with the comps. boys in mind. There is now the option of 1.22:1, which I have. This reduction strengthens the axles, CVs etc. by 20%.The cleanliness is a measure of the care taken by the boys at Mark's. The truck was delivered with 170,000 km on the clock but detailed from caryard.

MudRunnerTD

what kind of revs are you pulling at 100kms/h? is that ratio 20% taller than standard?

I didn't realise that they had a ratio alteration built into them as well, i thought they were all about clearance only.

Nice bit of Kit though.

.
My RPM with 315/75x16s is 70 revs. higher than standard. Hub ratio is 1.22:1 as against 1:1 standard, so 20% lower.

If you look closely, you will see a bracket on each corner. Wind down legs fit in here, and allow you to leave the camper freestanding and simply drive out from under it. It's brilliant.

Thanks Mudrunner. Yeah, nearly there. When building it the desired outcome was to end up with a "hardcore tourer". Pretty sure we achieved that! More HIDs, an undertray slide out gearbox, window tinting, roofrack...........shit, it never ends ,does it? LOL.

portal pat
3rd August 2010, 09:59 PM
Bought another pair of HIDs, spotties this time to compliment the existing spread beams. Windows tinted and windscreen antiglare strip and Thule roofbars fitted ready for a custom alloy rack. A roofrack might seem superfluous on a flattray, but not when the camper is fitted. Got a sheetmetal worker fabricating an undertray slideout draw as well.

Hello Portal Pad.
Please, tell us how it works with those portals on black?
I guess couldn't be better solution in terrain but I use mine as every-day vehicle.
Thus I wonder if those portals allow ordinary driving. How fast man could drive? and for how long time? I know that Laplander portals ?(we have them up here) are easy to overheat. Is that hazardous with Mark's PORTALS too?
Best regards from Poland.

Hello Starck,
My truck is also driven every day. There are no issues whatsoever with Mark's 4WD portal diffs. The vehicle is fully road legal and engineered. Speed is also not a problem. I have read elsewhere that early Unimog diffs. ( and Maybe Volvo 303s as well) overheated on long runs. My portals get no hotter than any other part of the axle assembly. If you wish to learn more, go to www. marks 4wdadaptors.com.au In Europe, Outback Imports in France are agents. Oh, by the way, portal diffs kick arse!!! LOL.

Interior is becoming quite comfortable lately with the inclusion of an "Outback" overhead console. Uniden UHF had to be force-fitted as it's very old (pre Boer War). Maybe an excuse to buy a new 80 channel !!??

Been some time since I was on here. Truck continues to evolve. Old OME coils and shockies were past their use by date so went with Suspension Stuff Ultraflexy coils and Dobinsons shocks. what a transformation.

Front is freed up as well now with Superior Superflex arms plus above-mentioned coils and shocks.

Went with a 44" LED lightbar as well for flood light. Absolutely awesome.

A reluctance to start hot proved to be a worn injector pump and tired injectors. $3200 got that sorted and good to go. Never ends, does it ?

How do you find your winch saver Got one from the states as well, but would hate to get hit in head with it, better than hook I suppose.
cheap enough too have already designs for an Aus version, for both roller fairlead and hawse fairlead

Already had an incident with it. Winch extension strap broke under strain, simply fell to ground and absorbed whip in rope. Brilliant.

Good to hear, a lot less accidents if more used rope instead of wire, but prices not too bad now

The Datto is getting better all the time. IP and injector renew gave it new legs, tune up to maximise power shortly. New lights here and there, new timber tray sides with ally protection inside, Superior arms, all new suspension, more winch mods., Nitto Mud Grapplers arrived today.

From the night shot looks like some serious under body lighting required.
Mark French is a great bloke, and his knowledge and finesse to detail is second to none.
Some mad trucks rolled out of Marks headquarters over the years,
I brought one of those rubber winch savers , would not like to be hit in the scone by one,
maybe USA heads are harder, better that than a lump of steel

do you find them noisy @110klm? yours are 1.22:1 correct? Marks 1.4:1 ratio would definitely be noisier, id assume 1.4:1 more suited to offroad only rigs? Dynatrac have Portals they are 1.5:1 and they don't recommend them for Highway use at all!

portal pat
9th April 2014, 10:26 PM
Yes, my portal ratio is 1.22:1. No, they are not noisy-despite being straight cut gears. 1.4:1 was originally designed for comp. rigs. Current production ratio is 1:16:1 which equates exactly to original gearing on original tyres, but allowing for 35s on portals.

MALS-GU

good to know on the 1.16:1 looks like they have been making continual advancements , although not really nescesary with the Allison 6Spd O/Drive 0.61 Ratio on the Box i will be using, (i may need to change to a higher numerical diff ratio?). Anyway I'm seeing Marks4x4 tomorrow to check out 3 rigs he has there, 1 patrol has portals, one patrol has portals and LS2 V8, another has the Duramax V8 with Allison 6Spd on Std Axels. I'm seriously considering the Duramax/Allison for my build, hopefully getting a test drive:)

Mate, I love them. I took 35" Claws off to fit these and they are superior. Their grip on wet bitumen is amazing, in snow and mud just sensational. In sand-yes well keep your foot out of it lol. Very noisy but if that bothers you buy an SUV or something.

I have spoken with Pat this afternoon and he says there are 80 pages of his build on Patrol4x4.com so maybe this is easier. he can't remember his PB details either. happy to see the shots on this website if it doesn't take a lot of effort Andy. thanks

Bugger, these will have to do then. I was under the impression he had a GQ, but obviously not. He filled me in with a heap of details and answered all the questions I asked - great guy, really helpful. Reckons its a mod worth doing, just a hard to swallow cost.
