G'day Guys,

Some of the pics below are of a trip i did with a few mates for a boys trip. Was the most difficult thing i have ever done and i will likely never forget. I dont think anyone will

The pics of the deep hole are taken in the Otways and this track was 7kms long and took 8 hours to complete. It is also a track that i slid into a tree in a big way and this day kinda force the hand with the strip down as i caved in the rear drivers side door and bent the roof.

The GQ coming out of the hole is the vehicle in front of me. Glad it was him and not me to be honest. It was one of a dozen or more holes like this. It took its toll. It had been a long time since anything like a GQ had been down this way as it is mainly suzuki country and they go round the big holes. You can see the quantity of rubbish being pushed out the hole in front of the car, we were there with shovels moving it out of the way. maybe 2 cubic metres.

Long day on the winches and every man for himself. every car was involved in recoveries at the same time so there was no leaving the tree truck protector for the next bloke as by the time they needed it we were using it on the next bog hole. Boys trip, 2 a car. Bloody great time.

We went in to this track about 10am and the last ones out got to camp past 10pm to a warm fire and a beer.

All Hail a good Navi!!!

Great story and photos MudRunner.

Wouldn't forget that day indeed!

What do you think of the Extreme Trekkers?

Iv'e been quizzing everyone here on their tyres like a pest lately, I'm about to invest in a new set so just checking out everyones stories.

OK, So this is where is gets interesting.

My 1992 Ford Maverick was one of the batch that came out of the factory with a dodgy paint job and the colour would de-laminate and strip off in big sheets. I put up with it and it was pretty rough but was a bush truck so no really big deal.

On the trip above i slid sideways into a very big tree, caved in the rear drivers door and bent the roof. I figured with a bent roof it would be a Write-off and did not want to go through that so parked it up and stripped it down.

Had some bad advice at this critical point and the strip down went far beyond the point of no return and into the world of "What was i thinking" and "Why did i listen to him" and "Bluudy Hell! i should just buy another one"

Hey Mark, Thanks mate.

That question is really easy mate.. The most difficult question about whether to buy Extreme Trekkers is only "What size to Buy mate" They are the best of the best mate IMO. For what i want to do anyway.

In the High Country i run 35" Cooper STs and they are perfect there and in the sand but for mud and crap go the ETs every time mate.

Yeah mate it was a real biatch to get out. i had a mate come over who used to own a panel shop to have a look and he steered me in the right direction. I ended up stripping the roof lining out on that side and jacking across from the floor sill on the opposite side of the car. Got most of it out and bogged the rest. A keen eye would still see it but to 99.9% of the population it would never be noticed. Needs the light to fall a certain way to stand out.

How far Along?? Shes rolling mate!! Christened her about a month ago after a 2 year build up. I might post a couple of finish shot shortly. Just trying to lay down the history on the build a bit. It has been a very long and torturing road.

Good on Ya Patch

Great story mate.

i'll be honest, I dont think I could've done that. I'm an impatient bugger and that would have killed me to undertake that.

Especially a project like that in the carport. The misses would kill me!

Painted the floor inside with about 6 very thick coats of body deadener paint (6litres) and also painted the inside of the doors. I used a Denso wrap onto the fire wall for insulation and i t is very quiet inside when rolling now.

While the carpet was up i ran a full system of Air lines from the back to the front and then a point to each side. I used pneumatic push fitting and fortunately found a sponsor for a heap of this stuff. Bonus as it was really expensive. I would not have got as much done with it if i had had to front with the cash as just the elbows where like $8 each. I reckon there is +50 fittings among other items throughout this build.

I would like to take this Opportunity to thank the sponsor.... You know who you are. Cheers mate.

Good on ya Mark.. Fortunately it was not under a carport. Unfortunately I was convinced to strip it down by a family member who was going to do most of the work...... He Helped me strip it to nothing in 4 days over beer and Pizza. In the garage of the Rental he was in, AN HOUR from my home!! Who's Idea was that????

I think he then realised what he had done, didn't know how to fix it and left me too it!!!! I never had an intention to do this mate, He reckoned it would be off the road for about 2 weeks and i would get it back all shiny and new!!!!

2 Years later and all my annual leave and a Shyt load of money, a bit of hair off the scone and a few more wrinkles and i am rolling finally. My 70 year old Dad even came down for a week to help me rub it back and prepare for paint. The young fella basically left me too it mate.

If i had the cash i truly would have parted it out. It was already stripped down.

But she is rolling finally.

So just before i did the strip down i was shopping to upgrade the suspension. I did allot of research ad finally made my decisions.

I negotiated with Shane from Suspension Stuff in NSW and bought a full 5" package off him 2 weeks before making the decision to strip it down.

All the boxes arrived and i unwrapped everything to check it all out then packed it all up again for what i thought would be a few weeks, turned into a year before i would unwrap the kit to fit up.

The Kit!

5" Flexi coils
12 stage adjustable extended length BOSS shocks
Superiors everything
--> Drop Boxes
--> Adjustable Panards front and Rear
--> Chromoly Tie rod
--> Chromoly Drag Link
--> Standard length Lower Trailing arms
--> Adjustable Upper trailing arms
--> Sway bar quick disconnects on front
Drop out cones
Spring retainers
Extended front Shock towers
80 series front Bump stops
Snake Racing Braided brake lines to all corners and to both diffs

How do you reckon i was feeling looking at all this stuff sitting in the shed while the GQ was a mess elsewhere??

Here are some pics

Thanks for the comments guys, i am really please with how it all turned out finally. It was a massive task and i have not posted a quarter of it....but will..

GQ4.2 if i dont think about it too long and i can jump on the back of the convoy and you lot can clean out the holes for me i might be tempted to take it on again????? Maybe??

Ron and Paul will drive around most of it in their Zuks mate. that hole in the pics was surrounded in Tree Ferns and the zuk could fit between them and go around the hole but the GQs had no choice but to drive through..damn it. you will definitely want the front and rear lockers mate. That GQ winching out of the hole had 36s and a 6 inch lift and an very up-spec'd Hi mount on the front.

Well here is the next batch of pics from my buildup.

I had an opportunity to buy a full Frozen Boost Water to Air Intercooler system just after the strip down also and grabbed it for a good price. Brand new in a box straight from America. Slightly different to what i would have bought direct but something i could adapt to my needs i thought.

This turned into a MUCH BIGGER JOB than i was expecting and took several months to get it sorted.

The fit up i did was a little left field and took a fair bit of nutting out. I did not want to fit up the heat exchanger in front of the radiator as i did not want to cut the crap out of my grill so i went about trying to fit it all up under the bonnet.

Bloody tight fit and very difficult to sort out.

It took many many refits to get it all to fit and still be able to close the bonnet. I also had to be careful not to compromise the strength of the bonnet and still be functional.

Check out my pics.

Stripped everything off the top and found the guy that fitted up the turbo did not refit the rocker cover vent and that is the oil all over the place.

I retained the bracket from the MTQ air box and used it for this fitup. I made another bracket for on top of it and made it into a heat shield to help protect everything.

The entire fit up was based around the design of a top mount and a Bonnet scoop.

I emailed Frozen Boost in the USA and discussed the fitup plan and they suggested that it was a fairly common fitup over there so i went for it.

I have attached the heat exchanger to the underside of the Bonnet inside a frame that i have made and this did my head in. It works but its really tight under there and took many many fit ups and adjustments until i had the clearance i needed to work.

Check it out.

I can see how that would have done your head in as that is a tight fit.

Also, the tin drip tray would work fine mate, good thinking!

Thanks Mark,

yeah it was a very tight fit, bloody thing.

I ended up grabbing my camera and putting it on Video and sitting it in the engine bay pointing at what every needed to check for clearance and closing the bonnet then watching back the video. Worked a bloody rippa mate and i can tell you that i have ended up in the end with about 20mm between the bottom of the fans and the intercooler. I am happy with that. I need to be gentle when i shut the bonnet and i dont slam it down. But al in all i am stoked with it.

Its a big surprise when ever i open the bonnet in front of someone not expecting to see it set up like that. The pics dont really do it justice.

Thanks for your comments mate

Well what can I say Mudrunner? That is one hell of a job you did, and absolutely bloody impressive just doesn't describe it. You have certainly got a good nut sitting there in between your ears to come up with the solutions to all the problems you encountered. Thanks for the great read. I think this project automatically qualifies you for "Legend" status mate!

Ah Good on ya Plasnart, really happy with it mate. got a head ache now but love it.

There is heaps more to the build and this is kinda an abridged version but i should post a pic of the finished product then can lay out the 12v system that i have done and the Air system.

Next pics might be the as built today pics
might post up over the weekend.

Thanks for your feed back guys, really appreciate it. Love my Nissan.....Now! but before?? LMAo

im sure there were many time you pulled your hair out getting that radiator in, what steered you towards the water to air rather than running a top mount air-air cooler?

Hey GQ42, doin the research it was clear that the best result for power was a Water to Air setup as it is the most efficient way to cool it down. The Water will soak a heap more heat out of the air than a straight air to air will effectively giving me more power.

In terms of the plumbing the air will travel alot less distance through this set up too. it goes from the turbo straight up over the top then into the intake. Running a front mount adds a heap for travel and turbulence. With this setup all i have to do is pump water which is much much easier to plumb. I think that the info from the Frozen Boost site about the efficiencies of the water to air system sold me mate and i never really considered an air to air after that.

I have not done much testing with it yet but keen to get it on a dyno in the next month. When out for the maiden voyage i drove around with it all off for a while then just turned on the pump and got a 60c degree drop in exhaust temp straight away. Not a bad change.

When i fitted the radiator up io was keen to not move it. I did not want to corrupt the fixing points by tightening and loosening them a heap of times. You can see the main frame i made up and i think i only moved it once further to the back after the initial setup. I gained the space by dropping the intercooler hard down onto the rocker cover. In the pics you can see the marks in the paint of stuff as i have fitted then removed then fitted a heap of times. Bloody thing.

Last weekend i noticed that there was a couple of wear marks on the intake silicon elbow at the front there and it was the back of the fan centre leaning on the elbow. I removed the elbow and cut another 15mm off the bottom that goes onto the intake flange and it dropped down out of the way. hope that is now sorted.

Thanks for checking out the build mate.

Thanks guys,

OK here is the next installment, there were lots of things i did in this build up that i took pics of and i will add in sections for your info.

First one is the front bar and Winch

Here is a pic the after i fitted it all back up and this is basically what it looked like before the strip down

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20gauges%20and%20stuff/GQ%20Done/IMG_0384.jpg?t=1278820740

First i fitted up the Chrome Grill and was happy there.

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20gauges%20and%20stuff/IMG_0441.jpg?t=1278820847

Then i had another look at the front bar and just thought that is was getting pretty grubby by comparison to the rest.

I had to strip out the winch to fit the airlines anyway so here is what happened next. I am a sucker for punishment.

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20gauges%20and%20stuff/IMG_0449.jpg?t=1278821098

Out comes the Winch and set aside for other work. Going to run Plasma rope that has been in the shed for 2 years so this bit is not required

Next got started on the winch. I pulled it to bits on the bench in the shed to give it a good clean out.

I used this link for a great writeup and how to ==> http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/8274/

Then i went about renovating what needed to be done. I Painted the casing using a Charcoal Hammertone paint out of a can

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20gauges%20and%20stuff/IMG_0467.jpg?t=1294270748

I tapped the casing to run Air lines to pressurise the case for Bog holes etc. You can see also that i used some of that PVC liquid tape on the terminals thinking that i could trim up the mess when dry => NO YOU CANT!!! so after this pic i went and got a very fine brush and neatened it up allot.

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20gauges%20and%20stuff/IMG_0469.jpg?t=1294271712
I reckon it looks great.

I actually made the roof light rack from scratch rather than use a roof rack conversion. A friend of mine made one like this and i liked it so went about making one. was a big job at the time but came up a treat. I will post some pics of it if your like. The 4 lights hanging from it are all cheapy lights that i have converted to HID and work well for close bush at night.

Hey GQ, yeah i fitted this system up to pressurise the casing to reduce the likelihood of water and mud getting inside through a bog hole. It will also help with keeping the motor cool.. Bonus. I have this isolated with an air solenoid switched at my centre console and i will post my Air system soon.

Thanks for looking guys and appreciate the comments

These are my roof lights that i made form scratch.

I used 25mm tube that i bent to the right shape using a tube bender then mig welded a 70mm flat plate across the length of it on the top and some and a couple of pieces bent up for the gutter mounts. You can buy the other half of the gutter mounts form Super cheap.

I haven't got any real close ups but you should get the idea.

I like that they offer real protection to the lights without sticking really high above the roof. I bought the lights before i started making the rack to get the height above the roof right. I like the profile i was able to get.

All the lights were bought off Ebay for $35 or less each. I then bought HID kits for each of ebay out of Hong Kong and you can see the ballasts hanging from the underside between each of the lights

Not knowing much about roof rack lights, do you get much reflection from your white bonnet when yr on high beam?

MudRunnerTD
12th July 2010, 11:33 PM
Nah not at all mate. I set them above the "B" Pillar and they are aimed about 10m to 15m in front of the car. I can imagine that there is a fair bit of reflection on the roof but that is irrelevant. I think the roof actually allows for a shadow over the bonnet if anything.

When i made the rack i intended to mount a side light also and did but the lights i bought were crap and i took them off.

Hey Paul

Mate the roof lights are all about short distance. the light force sort out what is happening out the front, but in the bush the roof lights really light up the surrounds for tight bush work.

Also running them when on a country road they are great for seeing the kangaroos on the side of the road.

Highly recommend them.

No doubt mate, the HID kits work a treat, cheap as and a big step up.

I was out in the GQ on the weekend and had to shuffle the cars in the drive after dark on sunday and couldn't believe how crappy the lights in the GU IV where after sitting behind the HIDs in the GQ all night. Just crap. really yellow and dull.

OK next installment.

During the build i was initiated into the world of 12volt and vehicle electrics for the first time, I had always had someone around me that knew there stuff and sorted out that stuff for me....not this time.

I figured it cant be that hard can it??? its only 2 bloody wires! For the kind of stuff i need to do this rule is true, yes it can get far more difficult but not my thing.

So first up, i wanted to fit up some gauges to the GQ, so i asked around and finally settled on mounting them in the centre of the dash. I had a base bent up and i painted it then set about installing a set of gauges from scratch.

They are... Oil Pressure, Water Temp, Exhaust Temp, Turbo Boost. Here is some pics of how they came up.

To fit all the switches up i removed the blank on the passenger side where the hand brake would go on a left hand drive vehicle.. you know that stupid pen holder thingy???? what were they thinking??

I then bought some plastic and made a switch panel for that spot. I ran a large power cable from the second battery fused at the battery to the new fuse box and split it across the box then branched to each of the new switches from there. I had to put a couple of relays in there to for the Intercooler pump and the intercooler fans which are switched independently.

I sourced over 18 months online a collection of ARB air solenoids and ARB diff lock switches that i scrapped tech print off and am going to re-label for the new needs. You will se in the pics that i am using Duct tape during the build to keep track but rest assured that the labeler will be in full swing at the end.

you can see the red low pressure valve to the left side there. that is controlling a low pressure system to the Winch and Gear box to help keep the water out in a bog hole.

In this build i also finished the incab winch control switches too.

I had a setup before but used Narva style rocker swtiches and they are not dust proof and used to jamb on. Not good

I replaced them with these and they are dust proof from super cheap.

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20gauges%20and%20stuff/IMG_0415.jpg?t=1280305020

The LED lights up when the button is pressed to tell me that there is power there.

The silver button on the steering column is actually a green LED that lights up when i switch on the Winch Isolation switch to light up the switches at night. I also have a white LED marker light over the winch drum linked to this switch for night driving. BONUS!!..

MATE, LOVE READING YOUR STORIES!!!

Just a quick one, whats the bottles switch for in that last pic?

Love the winch controls, well done!

MudRunnerTD
28th July 2010, 06:20 PM
The bottle switch is to isolate the storage bottles from the air system so when pumping up tyres or using lots of air somewhere i dont ahve to fill my bottles. When pumping up tyres i need to change my valve over to one that holds air when not in use so it will charge the bottles when i am moving tyres and then the bottle will help with a quick burst. Bt basically i am pumping 35s so 2 bottles or 5 odd litres of extra volume just slows things down.

And obviously they are in the back ground and are actually in the centre console, but look a bit strange in that pic...LOL. Check the pic higher for the switch in the console.

Good on ya Mark. Thanks for the comments.

Great build up mate. Some of those cabin shots of the complete chaos bring back memories when I replaced the roof and the inside of the car.. nothing more daunting than a totally stripped inside of a car.

Wish I had more time to allocate to my beast, but I think I'll stop the mods on it until I buy another GU with a bigger motor, a 4wd that I plan on keeping for a long time.

Cheers Guys,

Well i took it up the snow about 6 weeks ago and had some fun. Boys Swag trip up over Mt Skene. Swagged it on over 1m of snow and had 4" over night. Great trip. Damn cold but!!

Had a great weekend but have to say put a little bend in her.....Damn it!

Tucked in the drivers 1/4 on a tree after sliding off a track getting out of camp on the Sunday morning. Would be an easy repair if it was not for the fact that i have BOLTED ON THE FLARES every 4" with SS alan key and lock nuts. Every one of these also goes through the inner gaurd and this is in the way to fix the dent. Filed in the Couldn't be shagged file at the moment, been working on the GU:1062:;)

I will have to start a build thread for the GU IV now as i have just got back from a trip through the middle and did a 3" lift on her before i left.

I will have a bit of a look through and see if i have some more pics of this GQ but looking forward to the seasonal openings.....not long to go.:driving2:

LOL AB when i got out of the car and saw the damage the first thing i thought was "oh well easy fix! Damn! thats gunna suck taking the inner guard out though!"

The wife would KILL ME if i did a build like this to the GU. LMAO. Nah, 3" lift done properly with drop boxes and some other goodies and 33" Kumos and.....stuff! Ya know? STUFF. :coffeetime:

The missus just turns a blind eye and has stopped asking me a long time ago, it just gets done and she takes it for granted that i will sort it out. I do the banking :049: so she does not even want to know how much it costs!!! Love the missus!

What a crack up, make sure she doesn't get on the netbanking either mate.:1087:

Honestly though, I think the majority of my stuff ups in gear selection or not choosing the right path and having prangs, etc have all been first thing in the morning 30 minutes after leaving the campsite.

Must just be the morning groggy brain and not concentrating...lol

Hi Jorn, welcome to the forum mate, as Dogman said, say G'day and lots of people here will be able to help you with Suspension tips. For my 2cents though you need to figure out what your going to be carrying in terms of accessories and passengers on a regular basis then there are a few vendors about that will design a system that will suit your needs.

I am a big fan of Old Man Emu OME made in Australia. some of the best mid priced stuff on the market world wide today. Truly World class mate.

There is so much to say about the correct set up for you. How much weight? How high to go? Body lift or No bodylift?

The set up i have on this rig now is the culmination of many years driving it in the areas that i drive and i think it is really well sorted for my needs now. This set up would not suit Desert driving though and long touring would be terrible.

There is a fair bit of conversation in the Suspensions section of the forum, have a look around. If you want any other info Jorn give me a PM and i will happily give you any advice i have to give.

Cheers for reading my build.

Hey Big Fletch,

Yeah i have started the GU IV build and have some photos but just not got around to posting the thing up here yet. I will though, i really like how it has come up as a great tourer.

I took this thing out on the weekend and had a great day in the Otways on Saturday. The thing just gets it done. Love it. Took my Dad out with me for the first time in a long time and first time since the build, he cant believe that he was in a rig that is coming onto 20 years old....Nearly a Classic!

So smooth with Lotssss of Grunt. hehehe!

I need to sort out some flex shots for the front. It is so sure footed for something with affectively 9" of lift over standard. Parked it next to a GQ with no body lift and 2" of springs with 31's on the weekend OMG! Funny as!

It used to cost me $30 to $40 every tome i went to the car wash and i would be running the hole time.

Spent 3 hours with the Gerni and sponge and brush giving it a well earned clean.

Went to the Super Cheap 20%off sale on Sunday and bought a "Right Angle" attachment fo the end of the gerni to wash underneath

Yeah mate - I hear ya!! Front end flex is the desire for me also - patrols have heaps of rear end flex anyway and suspension upgrades only further highlight that - but getting it the front without compromising ride quality and safety is just a HUGE bonus ... Yours looks a treat ...

I'm PUMPED! :049:

Went out to Wombat today with a couple of mates to go climb a very big kick arse hill we found a while ago in the rain.

1st car up was a Hilux F&R lockers and big tyres.....He Winched 4 or 5 times up the hill.

2nd car up was an 80 TD on 37s got to the first step up and got stuck, blew his Himount trying to get over the step up and we had to let him down the hill by hand on a 20m winch strap wrapped around a tree a couple of times (works a treat) ( 1 man can hold a 3t car on a hill with 2 wraps around a tree)

3rd car up was a GU IV, Very very worked car and ALL the bells. He blew a stub axle on the 1st step up and we had to let him down by hand as well.

4th car was a very Tuff GQ on 36 peeds. Kicked its arse!! in low 1st

Here is a vid of the Hilux after he finished the winch section doing the top half of that hill. The guy taking this vid is standing where the guys were that talked about the tree i nearly hit in my vid...so a fair way up the hill.

Here is a very Tuff GU IV when it broke its axle and then us letting it back down on a strap. You can just see me in the dark top standing below the guy int he grey T'shirt that puts his hands up when the axle goes, i was right in front of him. I am the guy on the strap talking on the radio too. this gives a good indication of the angle of the hill too. This is the spot where i lift the front left off the ground first in my vid.

Listen for the axle break!!!! OUCH!!

This is looking up the hill from where the above damage was done. The Hilux was the first car up and had to winch several times from where this pic is to where his is now and then he drove the rest of the way.

You can get a feel for how steep this is looking at the girl trying to step up and how close the guy with the beanie is and how much higher he is than the others, he could reach then for a hand up.

Yeah was a bit nervous going in, ya know a few Butterflies but half way round the first bend i grabbed 2nd gear and just bloody drove it.

:icon_driving:

Every time i felt the front come off the ground i backed off slightly to try and land gently (Thats how you brake stuff) (Landing hard on the gas) Have a listen to the audio of the GU braking the axle, he was on the gas when the wheel came back down and it just went BANG!

Well as a few may have read in the Meet Up thread last time i took the beast out i did the big hill climb in the video on the previous page. Had a great drive but when i went to load up for the meet up i noted that i had a Blown Rear Shock....pissing it's oil out all over the place.

Damn

I must say that the car has not done much since the rebuild and what it had done i was a little unhappy with the suspension setup as i thought it was a little soft and i was forever lifting wheels off the ground. Check out that vid for evidence of the front left lifting.....all the time. Gets a little un-nerving to be honest but was a bit of fun.

Well got under the thing this week end to have a play around with it, took some measurements and noted that the rear shocks were a little long and then did the same on the front and they also were a little long for the bump stops even with the extensions that i have done.

I gave Shane at Suspension Stuff in NSW a call today where i got this kit in 2008 (sat in a box for 18months during the rebuild). Shane agrees that the BOSS Shocks ARE JUNK. I Agree. He has honoured some commitment to his customer with a very very good offer to replace the shocks with his own brand of Gas twin Tube jobs for $200 for 4. I reckon that is pretty reasonable given the time frame.

The new shocks should be here by the end of the week and i hope to bolt them up in the next week or so. Will be interesting to drive some hard stuff with new shocks to see how soft this thing is then.

Watch this space

OK well while the GQ sits in the back yard draining the oil i will post some pics of the suspension mods i did yesterday.

Yesterday i was able to line up a free 4 poster hoist at a local ARB dealer that i am friends with, Very kind.

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20Suspension%20Build/IMG_0739.jpg?t=1301808127

Firstly, during the build i fitted 12 stage adjustable BOSS Shocks! BOSS stands for "Bit Of S@#t Shock." i blew 1 in the first 1000kms on the front left and the other spat its oil all over the joint before they were 1500kms old. They had very little compression preload and a ridiculous amount of rebound dampening that saw my wheels off the ground every time i took it out.

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20Suspension%20Build/IMG_0756.jpg?t=1301808786

BOSS Shocks = JUNK!.

Secondly, i fitted a big lift and adjustable upper rear control arms to the back. When i fitted these i set it up to achieve the straightest possible pinion angle i could (Wrong) (a pinion requires about a 5 degree offset to give best performance) being straight gave the pinion nothing to do....

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20Suspension%20Build/IMG_0769.jpg?t=1301810096

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20Suspension%20Build/IMG_0768.jpg?t=1301810096

The idea of an adjustable trailing arm is to achieve the best setup for all of the suspension components ie, a nice straight spring without a big bow, a good pinion angle (5d), clearance around the tyres and best possible factory geometry.

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20Suspension%20Build/IMG_0766.jpg?t=1301810096

Also with the upper control arms set that way they were the diff was rolled back and the springs bowed back. The shock mounted behind the rear springs was rubbing on the springs during extension.

The other thing that the shocks were hitting was the back of the bump stop base on the top of the diff. (read ROOTED)

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20Suspension%20Build/IMG_0770.jpg?t=1301810336

Some close ups.

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20Suspension%20Build/IMG_0765.jpg?t=1301810336

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20Suspension%20Build/IMG_0764.jpg?t=1301810336

A heads up on this during the buy and prior to the setup would have been a real winner as i would have made the adjustments at setup. Damn it. Down a full set of shocks to find this out gets a bit average.

YNOT
3rd April 2011, 03:40 PM
When I fitted my Tough Dogs I had to cut about 10mm off the back of the bump stop plates on the rear diff to stop that happening.

Now i hear you ask "Why do you need the hoist MR??" Well the Front Radius Arm Flexi-Bushes i fitted in the build 1500kms ago are ROOTED too!!! NOt happy Jan! The Rubber ones that i took out that Mr Nissan fitted some 350,000kms ago where like new by comparison to these.

Well i only have grass in the back yard at the moment and for safety's sake i wanted to do it on the hoist and had use of aq press while i was there===>> Bonus!

Just finished reading the whole thread... fantastic.
Great build with many handy tips in here too.
The vids and pics are awesome.
Is this bloke Shane the same one that sold you the Boss shocks and those u-bute bushes that lasted an incredible 1500k's ;)

Hey Aussie, thanks for checking out my build mate, yes it is the same bloke but i am happy with the deal that he gave me on the new parts. No way he made money on them and he stood up straight away when i called him. Unfortunately my build took a long time and then i have not driven the thing much since it was finished...had allot on. So it has definitely been more than 3 years since i spent the cash originally.

-------------------------

Hey Fletch,

Cheers mate, i am really happy wit the flex shots too. have not driven the car since that day as the wife is very ready to drop her bundle so i have to stay close to home. Also the guys that i would normally have driven with went and bought Zuks while i built my GQ and do different driving now.

I have a couple of guys lined up for some decent driving when i get some time though, keen to get back into the Wombat soon for another crack at that hill in the videos with the new shocks to see if i lift the wheels as much this time. Will post the vids for comparison when i doo for sure.

Cheers MR.

Well the wait is nearly over, the wife and i have recently bought another house and it has a decent shed in the back yard....Finally! I think it is around 7.5 by 9m or so so that will do me for a bit.

Only 1 of the 3 bays is enclosed at the moment but i am keen to close in the other 2 bays ASAP and whack a roller door on the front as a matter of urgency. Then i will have a decent shed again for the first time in 4 years...

Party at Darren's house!!!!

It has a Ceiling fan in it already and thinking the 42" plasma for the wall. Shame i am going to fill it with stuff!!!. But the GQ should make it under cover very very soon. I dont like leaving it out in the UV. Not good for it at all.

We settle on the house on the 27th May and the Wife is expecting our second baby on the 24th!! Go figure. lol

so i was able to source some awesome switch covers off ebay and have been really happy with them. Check this out, really neatened it up for me.

Note the Roof Lights i went for a yellow light so i could tell what switch i needed in the dark at night ;)

Woke up and had breakfast, the wife is very pregnant so i am on house duties. Get the breakfast organised. and this is how it went.

8:41 Wife calls out from the shower "today is the day"

8:44 i send Zach in to say good bye to Mum, tell her he loves her and i tell him to tell her to "Have a good day" He kisses belly and says good bye to his sister to be. We did not tell him what was going down.

8:45 leave to drop off Zach to school.

Well been moving house the last month or so and been chained to a trailer. Damn i hate moving.

Thought i would drag this thread back off the bottom of the second page and post a little update, not much but i am keen.

Last week i won an auction on Ebay.... I do ok on that site.

I got a 120amp alternator including a vac pump for my TD42 GQ and it has arrived yesterday. Paid $407 delivered. Brand new not refurbed!.

Nothing worst than you battery going flat at 1am on a night drive cause you have all your lights on and the 70amp Nissan one just does not cut it. No point pumping 70amps and drawing 90+ amps?? something has to give. Makes for a very very dark drive home. been out without enough power to run a CD player!! go the diesel though, dont turn the bloody thing off and its all good.

Best of all the 70 can go in a box as a spare should i do the bog hole thing and kill the 120. will not be keen to do that.

Getting ready for a Boys Swag trip above the Vic snow line this weekend. Cant wait.

Fitted up the 120amp Alternator and pumping 14.4V at 1300rpm! Nice!

Also took advantage of a great special on ICOM 400pro UHFs and fitted a new radio to the beast this weekend.

Last but surely NOT LEAST!!!! I just bought a 42" LED light bar to fit to the roof light rack. I did the change over today but ran out of sunlight to finalise the wiring. I'll get some decent pics tomorrow and post them up. Looks very very trick. You would think that i made the rack to take the 42" it is a perfect fit!

was able to remove the 4 HIDs off the light rack in one go and will look to sell them complete with the loom in the next few weeks i think.

Cant wait to turn it on! ITs going to blow me away i think!.

OK you've waited long enough. here is a selection of pics for you.

Firstly i have to say that i am really impressed with the light i get out of the LED light bar. I have taken 4 X 35W HIDs off the roof to replace with this light bar so they had a bit to live up to.

The 35w HIDs were great but had defined beams and gave me a bright spot at 4 locations within my field plus what i was throwing out front.

The LED Light Bar is just a great big Flood of Light without definition. Its like being at a footy match at night under lights, ya just turn it on and it is there. a Glow.

So here are some feed back for you

OK so my setup => 35w HiLo HID headlights, 240 XGT LF 35w HID conversion and now the 42" LED light bar.

In the photo the sign to the far left is 85m away and the trees are 105m in front of me. (paced out by me)

35wHID low beam = Not bad hey!

here are some looking back at the car.

Cheers guys, I am really impressed with the light output so far and look forward to getting them into the tight stuff on the weekend where i think they will come into their own.

I know pics can do no real justice to the full effects of lighting but that is simply smashing MR.

So whats your opinion on light bar v HID's?

Paul the HIDs where great mate, no doubt. At the end of the day the expectation of a roof bar for me is to provided a good spread of light to the peripheral areas while the big spots where taken care of straight out the front by the front bar. For off roading i am not really chasing distance out of the roof bar.

That being said the 4 x 35w HIDs on the roof bar before where each set at different angles of may 30 & 15 degrees to each side of centre providing me a good spread. They where pointed maybe 30 to 40m in front of me and gave a distinct light beam to each point in the light spread pattern in my field of view. This was certainly workable and when it got tight was awesome.

This LED Light bar though, well it provided light to all areas that the HIDs would have thrown it and more, there is absolutely no definition of the beam and it is more of a Glow. I have read elsewhere someone describe it as "liquid light" and i think that that is an accurate description.

Am i happy? You bet! It was a tough call for me to splash the cash as i already had a great setup. But the special price offered by Bright Light Autos this month was very difficult to walk past.

If i was buying a lighting setup from scratch for the first time then LED technology would be the way to go for sure, and at those prices was well within reach. My problem was i had already spent my allocation for lighting on HID making the outlay quite daunting. Especially when they have been trying to sell this stuff to our industry for way over $1000 per uint! Damn!. oh well will try and recoup a little on the on-sell i guess.

For distance? the pics i posted of my HiLo Headlight set up shows good penetration at the 100m mark and bounce off other signs in the far distance for probably 300m, the LED light bar did not get close to that, Dont need it too though ;)

I will try and get some more pics over the weekend when i hope to use this thing in anger ;)

Cheers guys

Might make this pic my new avatar

Well been a big day, Just got home, used my winch for the first time in nearly a year!

Did some great tracks in the morning then took our hosts to the big hill in my previous video posts as they had not been there before.

I gotta tell you that i have probably watched that video 20 or 30 times as i reckon its awesome but i tell ya it made me complacent about that hill. The video does not even come close to giving that hill justice for what it is. I stood on the first step up today and Said OMG! Holy SH1T! If i had not already driven this there is no way in hell i'd be lining up for it. I cant even imagine how the track got there int eh first place it is just sooooo steep.

I have driven some pretty hard core stuff but it will truly stand as one of the most difficult things i am ever likely to point my 4B at. I was struggling to believe that i could drive it today to be honest. Crazy Stuff.

Well i did not get up without winching today and ended up having to winch 4 sections. Some bits were just 37" deep ruts and i hit them with 35s and they just could not do it.

The other guy in the white GQ that i posted before was with me again, this time he went after me and also winched a section. That car is a Blue Printed JPC prepared TD42 with a JPC fuel pump (Beast and about a $15k rebuild)

Too put a dampener on things he got 3/4 up and his engine shut down and it looks terminal. Damn it, towed him the rest of the way and got him to 4x4 Obsessions in Melton as our hosts were the owners an head mechanics from there so they opened up their shop for us.

Doesn't look good for a very hot engine and feeling a bit flat now. There was a heap of professional video shot today by the guys from 4wd TV who was my Navi so will post up a bit when it gets downloaded to you tube.

Big day, Big hill claimed another car.

Well went out to the Birthday Party of ol' mate the 80 owner (the Rogue Dung Beetle) last night and i caught up with Simon from 4WD TV. He tells me that they have just put the finishing touches on my "Your Rig" segment for the show as well as the story of our trip up that Monster hill in Wombat. He said it is a great segment and fairly lengthy and we should see that in the early new year!!..

I'll let you guys know when to look out for it and i will likely embed it here once its been on!.

Look out for the Forum Sticker. ;)

Excited.
