might be your mechanical fuel pump playing up

Is that a pricey fix

A big gasp of air is odd, that indicates a low pressure in the tank, all of mine have always had high pressure in the tank so when you take the cap off the tank expels air.
I don't know if it would cause the fluttering issue, but maybe the return hose is blocked?

When you did the fuel filter, did you clean the banjo filter too or just the main filter?

Don't they have a mechanical lift pump off the side of the motor. Should be less than $50 been ages since I looked at that engine

Banjo fuel filter is this the filter at the back ontop off the tank if so I havent done it lol .... can somone put a pic off were the lift pump is confused

it should be a glass topped pump from memory on the drivers side halfway down the block toward the front of the vehicle

Wouldn’t there have to be a breather for the tank somewhere? I’d guess it may be blocked or partially blocked?

Nah mate, the banjo filter is in the lift pump, fuel is actually filtered here before the canister filter so it can get very dirty.

The lift pump is located near the front of the block, below the fuel pump, there is a hand primer on it.
Come to think of it, the seals in the lift pump commonly fail, so it could also be sucking a small amount of air in from here.

My hand primer when I pump this it leaks so maybe were heading the right direction .... keep the info coming so good to have abit more knowledge on these cars as its gonna be a keeper for a long time .... thanks guys

When you say your hand primer pump leaks, are you saying it leaks a bit of fuel out when you pump the primer? Sounds like that could be your issue as I'm guessing it would also work in reverse and introduce air to your fuel line when the engine is running.

Also, although I am by no means an expert in this, on my boat, when the breather lines off the main tank were blocked, it created a vacuum in the tank and starved the engine somewhat. I first noticed a bit of a 'gasp' when opening the filler cap as opposed to that 'push' out of air that is more normal with expansion of vapour. As it turned out, both my breather lines had been kinked and as they deteriorated over time, they softened and the kink blocked the air that would have equalised the tanks.

Got me wondering where the breather lines are now. Do they exit up near the filler cap somewhere near the Aux tank pump inlet?

Yea my primer pump leaks abit as in use ...... would my filler cap on the tank work as my breather like a dirtbike ...

yes but there should be another breather off the top of the tank. there should be an inspection plate in the rear of your vehicle if its a shorty then under the rear seats there should be a plate about the size of a saucer with 4-6 bolts or screws in it take that off and you'll be able to get to the fuel gauge sender and the breather lines.

this is your lift pump. sorry i thought it was glass topped but its not

As I said haven't seen one in ages. I am sure it's the one. But I could also be very very wrong

Thats strange I have a shorty and I dont have that plate under the seats iv taken mine out and its ready for marine carpet ... last time I done the fuel sender and I had to take the tank out ... and the pics of that motor has diffrent similarities like the fuel filer housing is to the rear next to the fire wall

There is no inspection plate in an MQ or MK shorty.... Unfortunately to get to anything on top of the tank you have to drop it out.

Well mate I am out of ideas. Maybe try a diesel mechanic or fuel injection specialist

Hey Ferret, Did you get this sorted?. I had issues with my sd33t some time back. It would cut in and out a bit or cut out just after starting.

Two things to check. Check that the Oil presure sender wiring is not shorting on metal parts down near the dip stick area. And check that the rubber boot that protects the oil pressure sender is not full of water.

These two little issues were all that was wrong with mine.

Cheers Ric.

I don't know if you fixed it or not. But the fuel tank sounds like a blocked breather. I've seen tanks almost suck themselves in to the point of breaking the fuel sender from this issue.
But the fluttering sounds like air in the fuel. A quick way is to get clear fuel line and run to and from your filter to the injector pump. And look for air bubbles with the engine running.
