For those that aren't familiar with Toughbook's they are a very impressive in terms of how much abuse they are designed for.

As a lot of the tings I do I'm in uncharted territory ,

another interesting build made, are you going to be able to lock the arms as well to prevent them moving around when you're driving?

It won't hurt the toughbook. You can throw them across the garage, punch the touchscreen.

Why a toughbook? What are the specs of the one for this build?

And this video is for those wondering why do they call it a toughbook.

it might not damage the book but it would be damn annoying lol

is the first pics an original mounting idea then you changed your mind?

Yeah very simply because the mount has to be solid. The dash itself was a hard place to get a decent mount, thats why i decided to go thru it.

Specs of the toughbook now after I've had my way with it.

Windows 7 ultimate 32bit
1.06 duo core cpu
4096mb ram
120g corsair SSD

More than enough to do gps and all media.

I'll have heap of pics up soon, I'm just waiting for phone to charge.

It looks like a solid build, but wouldn't your passenger be at risk in a collision or roll over?

The laptop sits in the center, in terms of risk in a collision or a roll over it would have to be a serious accident to bring the dash forward enough to hit the passenger. If this was an issue police wouldn't have laptops sitting in the same position.

So far I have planned,

Reverse camera, music , internet when in signal, GPS, dash camera, movies for passenger,

I'll be able to pull up in my driveway and copy new music from my server, set playlists.

Read workshop manuals in the car, copy peoples sd cards from 4wding adventures on the day.

Looks good but seems a lot of work when mounting the ipad on the windscreen with the ram suctions caps and it does all of that also and even can be used to record video....

Could do the same thing with an Android tablet though. Horses for courses, I wouldn't put this thing in my car but this is not my car.

what I do like about this though is that you can run multiple programs and show them at the same time, where as I dont believe you can on an I-Pad and you can only have 2 apps running and showing on certain android tablets and phones, such as the later Samsung Galaxy range

Yeah you can have stuff running in the background but can't see them at the same time. Definitely heaps of advantages with running this over any tablet.

Mate, the only place I would mount a Ipad is under the rear wheel.

I did consider going the android options but you are limited with everything you do.

Amen,

Yeah you can have stuff running in the background but can't see them at the same time. Definitely heaps of advantages with running this over any tablet.

Not to mention your not having to find a app every 5 minutes to do different things.

There is a heap of reason I went down this path.

Main reason is I got the tough book for nothing had the ssd laying around and the ram. Another is that I can remote desktop into my media server to change folder permissons and I can also remote desktop to the laptop from my workstation to do any work I need to do. There is not codec issues or file format issue between platfroms.
I can transfer my photos/videos to my mediaserver which is networked thru the entire house including shed.

My media server,

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2013/12/121.jpg

Another reason is network speed I can run a network lead to laptop at home for large file transfer. Wireless at the best of times is painful

Very neat cabling in the case mate. What case is it?

When you were looking at various options for mounting in the car, did you consider a car-puter? And if so why did you decide against it?

I'm looking at installing a computer/laptop/tablet in my car and i'm trying to get the pro's and con's of each.

Yesh mate, I was playing with a mini atx and a micro atx on my test bench with the thoughts of going into the car. Yes the system it self would have been based on a i5 sandy bridge. I still would have been mounting some kind of touch screen display and the pc would have been permanently fixed into the car. I have lost a fair bit of cpu speed going the way I have but I am still able to remove the laptop from the car and use as a mobile device.

I've been building pc's for 12-13 years , so its pretty safe to say I have a sound knowledge. Maybe I'm Little to old school but tablets running android platforms are brilliant but they just don't have freedom. I don't want to have to download a new app every time I want to scratch my arse, In terms of windows 8 I still cant believe Microsoft could have got it so wrong after releasing the finest OS in thier history. Windows 7 with various hacks is a brillant OS. Tablets are a consumer market designed around how to sell a client a device and keep that consumer spending,
