Automatic gear stick wont stay on 'Drive'

Hi guys

I just got a '03 3.0D wagon 2 weeks ago.

Just yesterday i have had an issue where the gear stick wont stay in drive.
It wont click into place, so i can slided the gear stick up and down detween N > D > 2 and back the other way without pressing the button at all.
And if I line up the gear stick with D it will slide upwards into N as I am driving.

Has anyone had this issue?

Sorry but I am not too technical with cars.
I pulled off the cover and had a look at the ratchet or rail where the clip is and is seems fine. It clicks into park. but i cannot pull it down to first either.

nah mate, thats not how they come, the auto box lever should stay in what ever gear you put it in.

Does the car engage into neutral or just the shift lever?
