Hi Guys,

I have just had my mechanic come back to me and quote me $1800.00 to rebuild a leaking fuel pump for my 1997 2.8TD GQ.

Ouch!!!.... being new to the diesel game, is this right?

He says he cant pass rego on the car with the pump as it is. There is no discharge leaking to the ground or on any adjacent parts to the pump so Im not sure if it wont pass rego in NSW.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me please or possibly offer an alternative solution?

Cheers,

Rob

Get a second opinion Rob. If there's no visible discharge then I'd be seeking confirmation about this issue.

I definately agree, get a second opinion from a diesel specialist.

Although some mechanics know a bit about many things
They dont specialise in specific things

Thanks Guys. The mechanic I took it to is a diesel mech and 4wd service centre only.

I got a bit sus when he started saying that my radiator needed to be serviced because it was full of mud...... the radiator is brand new as of 3 months ago when I rebuilt the top end and had it, as well as the water pump, replaced. Then he tried to tell me it would cost about $800.00 to have the front bearings repacked and it would cost more if they needed to be replaced. I gave him the history of the vehicle (as I know it from when I purchased it) so he already knew the radiator had been replaced not long ago.

I initially asked him to do a saftey inspection and give me a reasonably accurate account of the issues I need to look at and there was just somthing about his "Report" that set alarm bells ringing......

I have spoken to other diesel mechs and they have said to get a second opinion which is what I am going to do.

I also had a leaking pump and I mean leaking you could see it dripping like a tap, I rang around several diesel mech and 4wd places for prices and quotes were from $1200/1600, then I searched the yellow pages and found a crowed that repaired injection pumps popped down to see them and near dropped off my seat, there before my eyes were at least a dozen nissans, toyotas, got a quote $990.00 inc filter, they also chucked in a stubbie holder, hat, and key ring,
The name of the place is ( Hi Tech ) diesel injection 08 83596088 I should also say they are in Adelaide. Great mob of blokes willing to spend time with you and talk you through what they have or have to do.

Thats worth the plug just in itself Nugget.

I must say that the guy I was dealing with was very friendly and was willing to offer advice and he didnt charge me for the inspection. Although I offered to pay so that I would get a thourough job done over a few days and not the "Half assed" one I got where they just looked and wobbled bits without doing a real inspection of the parts, they assume that the bearings need packing due to the age of the vehicle but cant tell for sure because they didnt actually sight them.

Well, you get what you pay for........

Yeah theres a diesel shop down here in Lismore NSW too with a bloke they call "she's F***** Merv" as everything that people take there he say argh mate she's F***** & then sets apon ripping them off with unsightly bills, 1 bloke had a bit of water in his system & got charged over $6k
they only drained out of tank 420ml of water & even in the filter they only drained out another 40ml.
After the work was all done he said he still needed the car to replace the timing belt & clean out all the turbo & intercooler & wanted more money for that when all the customer wanted in the first place was a service on the injector pump & clean the lines.
I saw his bill the other day & I'm sure they wrote down the part numbers of every nut washer & spring out of his spare parts book it was 3 pages long. wow there are heaps of rippoff artists out there.
