View Full Version : Dual 12v compressor and air tank upgrade

Little something I'm working on. I'm going to be running dual 12v compressors soon and had to go for a bigger a tank. Before everyone one goes why? well why not?

The tank I'm using is off an old tractor and believe me when I say its a solid tank. It is going under the car inside the chassis rails and it will be able to take a punishment. The fittings side I will have protective plates.

My old tank,

The new tank,

How much air do you need???????
Is the extra weight worth the extra few litres of air.

Well done mate... I will be watching with great interest.

I have a small 9lt tank and find it to be too small for popping tyres back on there bead.

It is great having this sort of set up for many jobs needed out on the track..

Interested to see what compressor you run

Great mod Nice and solid steel tank not one of the lighter construction ones.
You'll be able to run a rattle gun now, Don't forget [non return valve on your air Manifold]

@ Mego weight wise would be very small plus its down low, where most fit an air tank

Well lets just say if the two compressors and tank weigh more than 20 kilos i'll be surprised. I could write a list of why im doing this but simply I could just get on with this build.

Current compressor setup I'm dueling it with, as much to peoples disgust it will be going where the center console is and over the top it will be replace with new custom center console.

Title changed mate.

I say go for it mate, and why because you can.

I have had a steel air tank out of a M.A.N truck since 2003, still not in the 4b yet, was one of those projects I started and never finished :(

Then I have this one , Air on Board say the combo is fine for a locker,
internal mount only

Thought you were fitting a air horn with that one, its only 3ltrs I don't think that will do much regarding tyres but a nice compact unit.

What is the braided line you are using mate... I run one of those compressors and it gets so hot it melts the line all the time.. I have made changes 5 times now.

My other compressor is a TJM one and it gets no where near as hot.

They look to me to be household plumbing hoses, if they are could be an issue as they are only rated to 90-100 degrees unless they are a specific hose?

Gonna be a sweet set up though will be interesting to know how fast it's going to do 18- 40 psi in comparison to others. Should be a walk in the park

Lol we talk bout that shit later mate, I'm about two hours away from being finished. Im just bolting the compressor in atm. remove front expose the conduct with my other compressor power feeds and add new one back to battery. Drop in another relay next to the other compressors relay double the switching wires and run another power feed to battery.

The time it takes to pump 4 tyres from 16- 40 psi and compressor temps at the end, you would think being 2 compressors then they wouldn't need to work as hard.
Then do the same test with each compressor on its own recording time and compressor temps again as a comparison.

haha funny aren't we,

Compressors have proved themselves over the past few weeks both removing sets of tyres with a rattle gun, die grinders air drills. Plus using them for my nail guns at work all day. But running them all day is a strain on one battery alone so what I'm going to do is setup my compressors like a dual battery setup with a manual switch. So i can run compressors on ethier 1st or 2nd battery or both. When im pumping all my mates tyres up as I often get stuck with a can use the primary battery with the alternator providing the power.

Please put your input in, Cuppa if your reading please put your input in.

Have some pics in a sec

Hey Silent,
Can I ask what fitting you started with to put into the end of the compressor? I'm guessing 1/4 bsp? Then what did you cut it to, to get it to fit?
I'm trying to do something similar and put a pressure valve off a tee piece and couldn't find anything to fit. Grr

Thank you

Cheers mate, I have seen the manifolds but only in npt. I need to be able to get out of the compressor first, either npt or bsp to be able to attach one. I've already been to a couple of fitting shops including Enzed and it's not a common thread which is annoying.

@ strex I think looking at the compressor they have used a bolt thread from the head through the handle to
the nitto fitting,,,,, either 10mm x 1.25 or 8mm x 1.25,,,,,,,,, Sounds right to me.
Are you mounting it as well ,if so Id remove the handle, but thats just me.lol

I did originally have the handle off 3dogs but that was a different thread again. So on that one handle there were 3 different threads. Talk about making it confusing. Haha
