hi,

I'm after a better sound out of my exhaust on my 4.2 petrol GQ. It's a big engine and I want it to sound like one (ie. deep rumble type of sound), but nothing to noisy as to attract the wrong attention and also don't want to spend too much as I can't really call it a priority! It's currently got the cat, large middle muffler, small rear muffler. Can I just get away with removing the middle or rear mufflers and replacing with a pipe or will it sound rubbish?

cheers

Trying to change the sound is very hit and miss, 2 mufflers that look identical can give 2 completely different sound. The size of the pipe and bends can also change the sound. Removing the rear muffler from the standard exhaust makes little to no difference to the sound.

can u get a better sound from a 4.2 petrol???? I always love the sound of a turbo diesel going past, the sound alone makes me want 2 convert from petrol to diesel

I don't know, I've not heard a diesel yet (have to put my windows down more instead of using the aircon!), but the petrol is so sweet and smooth, just need to hear it a bit more, it's almost silent! My Delica was a 2.8TD 4cyl which wasn't so sweet, but I expect the 6cyl diesel Patrol sounds much better.

If you like a bit of sound, I would recommend trading in the petrol 4 a turbo diesel.
Sorry 2 say, but I've never heard anything nice sounding out of a petrol 4.2......... unless of course its been supercharged :)

I'm gonna have to listen to one of these diesels for sure! Actually I wanted a diesel, but they seemed a bit more rare and expensive than the petrols and I was in a rush. If I get my petty sounding nice I'll let you know!! :tease:

Yeah with mates and their Sleek Sports cars with small 4 cylinder engines sounding better than my beast... I wonder why it is an effort to get the extreme low rumble from the exhaust...
Something tells me it is something to do with the Diesel/Petrol difference.

be careful what you wish for - a nice note is a lovely thing - I used to have an F100 with 4" exhaust attached to a 302 cleveland.

however my Mav wagon used to drone at just on 100k in 5th gear. Disappeared after a muffler replacement and addition of a resonator. Much more pleasant to drive, and sounds ok.

oops, 3" exhaust on the cleveland, not 4.

Ive got a tb45 which is basically a bored tb42 which doesnt sound half bad for a straight 6. Its never really going to rumble like a v8 but it doesnt drone too much and it burps a bit backing off the throttle. Not to mention it backfires off the limiter ;)
Running paceys off the front and 2.5" through to the back. Its got a high flow cat and a straight through muffler. Made a hell of a difference to response and power as well!

I'm after a better sound out of my exhaust tips (http://www.stylintrucks.com/category/performance/exhaust_tips.aspx) on my 4.2 petrol GQ. Well, one option, for a carbie petrol, is to have everything nice and warm, drive around, find a downhill run, leave in top gear, turn off ignition, give the throttle a pump or three, and then turn the ignition back on :-) That will open up a nice split in the shiny muffler somewhere under the rear seat :-)

I would go to an exhaust shop of your choice and start with telling them what you want in the new one. It will be extra easy for them to remove the old one and shouldn't cost much, esp compared with the new one :-) If you use your troll off road, make sure they tuck the tailpipe up as much as is feasible
