1981 mk firing problem

hello. my mk has a problem and need help. i turn the key to wind it over, it fires but dies strait away, if i turn the key over half way strait away with the throttle on a little it wires back up, is that the ignition switch or something else?

If it's a petrol engine your ballast resistor is faulty.
