Just putting it out there at the moment to gauge interest.

How about a monthly photo comp?
Each month a photographic topic is chosen.
People post their photos & at the end of the month everyone is asked to PM their top 3 selection to a 'photo facilitator'.
From the top 3 selections 10 finalists are chosen & posted in a poll.
Everyone who wants to then votes & a winner is selected.
Winner gets to choose the following months topic.

For this to work the forum software would need to be able to accommodate a poll for each months final vote, & it would need at least two or three people to take turns/cover absences in collating the top 3 selections & putting the poll together. I am prepared to put up my hand.

To Andy & mods - is this possible?
To everyone else - if it is possible would you participate?

do they have to be taken that month? or can they be from previous adventures? i would be lucky if i got out once every 6 months =(

No, I wouldn't envisage entries having to be taken that month, but they would have to be taken by the poster or a member of his/her party (to ensure that pics are not just lifted off the internet, & ensuring there are no copyright issues for Andy). Previous adventures would be most suitable if the pic fitted the monthly topic. Part of my thinking also is that a comp might encourage folk to get their cameras out a bit more often.

Probably the easiest way to manage that would be to create a section or sub board. Then a new thread for each month of the comp and a poll for that month.

I think it would be pretty simple to do and would not need the facilitators to have admin rights on the forum which would be hard to manage.

If you guys want it I am sure Andy could get it done.

Sounds familiar.. Lol. Ps, I've bloody forgotten my name for that site..

Anyway, why not weekly? Wife's mothers forum does weekly and the previous weeks winner chooses New topic and selects winner for that week..
This week's topic On my wife's forum was refraction... I'll post a pic if her winning shot.
Makes it easier in my eyes instead if having one person bombarded with thousands of pm's and having to count each one..

I'm happy either way and will be an eager participant..

I'm think the voting could be done with the Thanks button leaving the pms out of it making it easier to manage. If a better shot is put up them you simply remove your thanks and thank the better shot or vote twice??

Using the 'Thanks' system sounds worth a try. I do wonder if folks votes being 'public' might influence the way they vote at times, but ceratinly a lot less work than PM's.
I still prefer monthly, as it gives folk a chance to get out & take a photo if they want to.
I'd like to include a few basic guidelines on how the comp works, to ensure we end up with only entry posts, & brief discussion relevant to them, avoiding getting into banter. Reason is so that anyone later looking at the thread doesn't have to plough through a heap of 'stuff' just to find the entries.
Andy, if you could set up a dedicated forum, I'll post up the guidelines & a first topic. If needed I'll also start a separate thread for discussion of the guidelines.

Problem with a poll which anyone can create is you need to put the members name in the poll to vote which you don't know who is going to post a photo in the thread it self.

What most forums do is each month put up a thread...

"Post up your October photos"

Everyone posts their photos in that October thread. Once October is finished someone needs to go through the names and start a new thread "vote for October photo winner and put the 50 or so members names in poll to vote.

At the same time you need to put a new thread up "post up November photos"

At end of November you tally up October votes and announce winner from October.

Then start new thread for December photo and start new thread for October voting and so on....

It's a great way to see stats on who's winning but is labour intensive for someone.

It might be easier to post photos on monthly new threads, close monthly threads at end of month and go through and announce winner at end of thread based on most thanks.

A bump announcing to thank the best photo near end of month would be good too.

I'm not home yet on phone rushing but that's my general feeling blokes.

Thoughts?

Andy's quite right. I've done as he describes before, & it is very labour intensive.
It's why I originally said more than one person would be needed to oversee the competition.
Let's try the 'Thanks' idea & see how it goes.
