G'day Trendsetters,

My family and I will be heading down to Geelong on the 20th December for three weeks holiday showing off our new son to our family members who live in Geelong.

It has been over 25 years since i last engaged low range in Victoria. If it is possible i would like to catch up with some of the Victorian members for a social catch-up or even go out for a bit off 4x4 driving day trip!

I know it is Christmas and many Victorian members will be heading away for holidays, however for those Victorian members who are going away and would like to catch-up and do a day trip somewhere please advise me, it would be fantastic to catch up with you!

PS, i will even throw in a farken couple of good yarns to tickle your sense of humor buds. lol

Regards,

Paul (RLI)

It doesn't stay wet for long.
A few years back, we went up the week after Hastings street was under water from recent rains. We weren't happy except we got there and couldn't tell they flooded last week, apart from the stories.

Expressions of interest for a B/Q & 4x4 family fun day either late December after X-mas or early January!

MudRunner (Darren) is keen to organise a trip in the Otway’s! Or Paddys swamp, this would be fantastic as I have never been to either of these areas! Darren if possible, could I leave this trip in your capable hands!

Looking forwards to catching up with those folks that can make it that day!

PS, folks, if possible count we please get a rough head count for Darren!

Yep, I should be in if early Jan.

I have to help my inlaws move a frigging house back on the Murray around Christmas and possible early mid jan again after stumps are done but should work around it when proper dates are announced.

If you are camping at DANDOS, bring your own dunny. There are drop toilets but they will be foul considering it will be just after Christmas / new years. We where last Aust day and they where bad.

Good place for kids with bikes.

( I just organised a club trip there for Aust day)

Will be dry and dusty if no rain, with some bog holes in the damp locations,

We found 1 track Aust day that took us 4 hours to cover less then 1 km it was full of bog holes. But mostly dry tracks

Sorry guys, I have just got soooo much on at the moment I have not given this another thought other than knowing the date.

The Date is set around Paul RLI so we are working around that.

Dandos is not a bad spot to camp but there may be allot of campers there still then. It's the last weekend before many will go back to work so it could be emptying out by then. It's a big spot though.

I will likely be heading down for the day from Geelong. Yes most likely heading through Colac so can pick folks up there. A Meetup point cold be Waurn Ponds for those in Melbourne and Geelong.

Those camping should packup on Sunday morning and travel with your gear as we will head East from there and not get back to the area. Those staying Sunday night can get back easily though.

If people would prefer a family day and BBQ though then somewhere closer to Geelong and some easy tracks through the Anglesea Heath could be good too. Will be way way less driving to get there and some nice spots to camp.

Let me know what folks want to do.
Hope that helps.

G'day folks,

I am sorry for not being too active lately; unfortunately the new medication has knocked the farken crap-out of me, my wife and I have a phone conference with our specialist on Monday, hopefully the last two blood tests that i had done will reveal that the 5 new antibiotics that i have been on for the last 6 weeks are controlling my chronic crohns disease!

Folks, I have never been so tired in my life before, i cannot believe the side effects of this medication. However, the specialist did advise my wife and I in October that i would go backwards, before I would go forwards. Hopefully the test results on Monday are positive for us.

PS, I will definitely be in attendance on the day, even if it means that my father or father in-law drives me to meet you good folks!

Kind regards,

Dandos is 2.5 hours drive from Geelong just to get there and I am not sure that is a reasonable drive for you. Are you keen to do some tracks or meet the boys mate? Maybe we can do an easy / medium trip out of Anglesea which is only 30mins down the road? We could have a BBQ lunch down at the beach and the kids can play at the park. There will be a good bit of camping there but you might be in the caravan park guys.

@LiftLid Gary do you know anywhere down there the guys can camp for free mate?

Hi everyone, just caught up on this thread. Would love to tag along for the day if we're welcome to...
Dandos is only around 45 mins from Geelong, best free camp in the area as it's looked after by the 4wd club. We won't be camping because we only live near Waurn ponds.
There are some good tracks in Bambra - logging tracks. Can be really challenging.
Would love to do big hill track though - we never did it with our old Pajero and when we changed to a Delica it was too challenging. Now we have the Troll it would be great to have a crack.
We have the Meridian Otways map - worth getting to see what's around.
We're up for anything though.
Bringing the kids - hope that's okay.

Hi Emm,

Your more than welcome to come along and your kids will have plenty of company. How old are they?

I reckon you'd be doing real well to make Dandos in 45 minutes though! Even from Waurn Ponds your still 30+ minutes to Colac before you head south. I'd still say - 1.5hours on a good day to Dandos. RLI are you keen for a 1.5 hour drive to meet the guys?

What club are you a mmber of Emm? Does your club look after Dandos? Camp Host or something?

When did you try and do Big Hill track Emm? I cleared that track for seasonal opening last year and reckon I could have done it in the wife's Volvo! I think it has been graded from memory. Sorry. Happy to stick our head up maybe but it will be a cake walk unfortunately.

Hi, we wanted to do Big Hill track three years ago when we came back from our trip around Australia but people told us our Delica would never make it...
Might have a drive there this weekend then! :-)
When we went to Dandos I thought we went through Forrest, it was a while ago so I could be wrong about the time. Colac is about 50 mins - we never head that way when going to the otways, always through Forrest.
From memory it was the Geelong 4x4 club that were caretakers, but again I could be proven wrong about that also!
Not a member of any club, only the Geelong Field and Game.
Kids are 3 boys: 14, 12 and 7 and a 10 year old girl.
Camping sounds good! :-)

Hi Emm,

I have just got home and reviewed the Map. Dandos is halfway between Gellibrand and Forrest on off Lardners Rd / Gellibrand Rd. There may be a little time saved heading down via Forrest, not much though mate. The easiest drive would be via Colac for sure. If you took Cape Otway Road you could maybe save 20 minutes but miss the opportunity to Fuel up in Colac.

Now lets talk Big Hill Track. Big Hill track is Miles away from Dandos mate, its at the other end of the Otways Ranges nearly and is off Deans Marsh Road. The top of Big Hill track junctions Deans Marsh road at the end of Mt Sabine rd also which is considered an "Iconic 4WD Track" OMG! what a disgrace! I could definitely do that in Naomi's Volvo wagon for sure!

I can certainly think of plenty of tracks that will be more fun that Big Hill track mate, i think you will be very disappointed when you get down there this weekend! most of the tracks to the East side of Deans Marsh rd are Easy in my opinion, nothing even gets to Medium there mate.

I will get down there in the next month and check out some tracks so we dont waste our time and still have some good catchup time too.

So if everyone is happy Dandos is the spot then. Paul is fine to travel so Dandos it is. It is a Public space and could have many campers there. there is a Drop toilet that may or may not be clean and f we can have a fire then we will need to bring bagged wood as finding good wood to burn could be a challenge.

Although it would be great i can assure you Emm that the Geelong 4WD Club does Not look after Dandos Camp ground in any way. They have not done a Camp Host there for at least 5 years and do not provide any form of management service to that area. Dandos is in the Otways Forrest Park and is therefore managed by Parks Victoria who do a great job as long as Victoria is not on Fire.

As Emm stated the Maridian Touring Map "The Otways 4WD Map" is by far the best map of the area.

Emm i have an 8 year old Boy and a 2.5 yo little girl. Bring the tribe.

Hello All,

Caught up with Paul on the phone earlier today and he's keen to make this meetup, he's got a few prospective drivers to take him if needed.
Just need to be aware that due to Pauls condition he may/will need access to more than basic toilet facilities (I'm sure he can be more specific). My wife also has a medical condition and she likes reasonable facilities but is happy to stay home if not available.

Hello All,

Was speaking with Paul this afternoon, he's still not to well but is definitely coming down to Vic.
He'll be driving so won't know about a meet up location until he gets here and depends how he feels, the trip may knock him around a bit.
Also he's not keen to do any rough 4WDing as he needs the car to get him and the family back to Coffs. At this stage meetup location is still not confirmed but he said that shouldn't stop anyone else from selecting a campsite if they wish, we can all meetup at a convenient place later.
He sends his regards and will be online as soon as he feels up to it.

G'day folks,

I am a little sore around the old freckle at present, the surgeon has drained the abscess "again" for the sixth time in 18 months. He has also fitted a seton drain to the abscess to help allow it to heal properly, unfortunately this thing is uncomfortable to sit on.

My surgeon has allowed my family and I to head down to Victoria to catch up with family and friends for Christmas, unfortunately, I am booked back into hospital on the 13th January 2014 for more bowel surgery.

The drain gets removed from a GP in Geelong on Friday 3rd January 2014. So i cannot guarantee if i am going to be fit enough to go 4x4 driving. I still want to catch up with everyone for a drink and a chat before you head off on your trip!

PS, i apologise for causing problems with the trip!

Otherwise Paul will be under pressure to hang around when his health won't let him on Sunday. Trying to drive and to chat is tough for all.

G'day folks,

If possible, could you please advise how many of you would like a show & tell B/Q and meet & greet type day and how many of you just want to go 4x4 wheeling.

The reason i ask this, on the Saturday 4th January it is my sons Christening and it is the main reason that we came to Victoria for Christmas. I know Darren (MudRunner) would like to have a meet & greet on the Saturday afternoon, so that those folks that want to travel and camp overnight at the Otways can do so. Also that those that want to do the off-roading on the Sunday morning can do so with the minimum of time lost by having the meet & greet on the Saturday.

Originally i was only going to be available on the Sunday 5th January as the Saturday is going to be difficult due to my sons christening.

The problem i have with a Saturday afternoon meet-up, is all those folks travelling from all parts of Victoria to only attend the show & tell B/Q and meet & greet on the Saturday, is that i will not be available to catch up with you all until around 4.30 pm that afternoon due to my families Christening. However, Darren has advised me that he is prepared to meet & greet you all earlier that afternoon and i will drop in around 4.30 pm with my family for a B/Q dinner, if that is OK with everyone.

I have found a beautiful location for our show & tell B/Q and meet & greet on the Saturday afternoon and this is at the Barwon Valley fun park located on the banks of the Barwon river in Geelong. It has shaded tree areas, B/Qs and the fun-park itself for our children to run around and have a good time. Also swimming from the banks of the river. Plenty of parking for our Patrols.

Based on the numbers as requested above (show & tell B/Q and meet & greet type day and how many of you want to just go 4x4 wheeling.) will decide on which is the more reasonable scenario to go with!

PS, I hope your Christmas day has been a good one!

Kind regards,

RLI

Where are we camping?

Probably Dandos camp ground near Gellibrand. Maybe an hour from the Meetup site that Paul has mentioned.

So the site that Paul and I spoke of is on the Barwon River and not far from where Paul is staying and he can come to the BBQ when he is finished at the christening which we are expecting to be around 4 - 4:30pm.

We can gather from say 3pm or so and make an afternoon of it then those that want to camp can head to Dandos around 7pm or whenever depending if your happy to setup in the dark.

Paul if we go this way are you up for a drive on Sunday too mate?

Merry Christmas everyone.

Looking forward to a New Year BBQ with everyone that can come. Bring your children.

G'day Darren,

Health permitting i will be down for both the B/Q and the 4x4 fun-day the following day!

The only problems i have are firstly the 4x4 fun-day i will not be able to conduct any physical recoveries due to my stoma (bowel exposed) secondly, the brake on my Warn winch is not working and most importantly, i do not want to take any risks braking the Patrol, especially being 1700 ks from home.

My wife has already read me the riot act if i have a serious break-down due to financial restraints at present.

We are currently out of pocket of the sum of $7,500.00 for my latest antibiotics which was purchased on 20th December. Unfortunately, these new antibiotics are not covered by the pharmaceutical benefit scheme, our private health insurance or by DVA.

At present I have to be financially sensible as the Patrol is our main vehicle has my wife's car is in the panel beaters due to horrific hail damaged done 2 weeks ago!

PS, my father, father-in law, my two children and myself will be in attendance for Saturdays B/Q dinner.

Kind regards,

Paul (RLI)

That's a huge amount to have to fork out for medication. I hope it does the trick though. And no worries about taking it easy with your Patrol, because mine is only a stocky any way, no lift, no snorkel, yet, and its my daily drive as well.

I should be ok for the Saturday arvo, I have to work on Saturday but will hopefully be able to come.

Paul if your definitely coming on the Sunday drive then I will try my best for the Saturday if not 100% Sunday drive.

If your not sure on Sunday then ill make it happen somehow on the Saturday arvo BBQ.

Ill also try to move my work day back a day in the next few days too.

Paul I am sorry mate but I cannot make this one. Was talking to Darren about something else and he reminded me it was this weekend, my Patrol is out of action until Patrolapart open and I can get some parts but that is not until next Monday, no local guys have the bits I need either. So pissed off, sorry mate but I am sure there will be a next time.

PS, with you being 16, you have plenty of time to ride with the off road warriors one day young Winnie. lol

OK! Sorry guys this has creeped up on us a bit.

This meetup is THIS WEEKEND!

We will meet at the BARWON VALLEY PARK, Barrabool Rd BELMONT.

2:30pm onwards for a BBQ Dinner with Paul and his family who will arrive around 4pm or so.

There is a large Kids play ground and BBQs and plenty of shade. If its hot though bring your sunscreen. The Barwon River is just there too and you might get a swim if the weather is nice.

I will post some maps from MC

Paul, I was hoping to make it for the Saturday and Sunday but will now be driving back from NSW South Coast on Saturday. I'll aim to meet early Sunday morning at the camping location. Is that still at Dando's?

Posting here too just incase people have missed the other new thread

So I just had a coffee and a chat with Paul, great bloke.

I have had a look at the map while he was here and at this stage we are looking to have 2 Meetup points then rendezvous in Waurn Ponds before heading into the Otways.

Meetup point 1 is the Barwon Vally Park 8:30am
where the Saturday BBQ is as some will be at the caravan park opposite and Paul and his family are just up the road.

Meetup point 2 Lara 8:15am
Pm me for the address.

Rendezvous will be at 9am
Bunnings Carpark Waurn Ponds

Heading into the Otways via Cape Otway Rd down into Barwon Downs.

I have booked into a nearby caravan park for Saturday and Sunday night. Thanks for posting that info, Paul. I had to ask, because my internet data has run out (the joys of living in the bush) and is slowed so nothing is loading:(
