OK guys, when cold the auto trans seems to hold 2nd gear ( pretty sure 2nd ), after it warms up a bit all seams to be ok.

Thoughts???

Why buy a manual when you can download one for free!

Can you manually pull it back through the gears when it's playing up?

Is the 'Power' light coming on when it holds the gear?? Or don't you have one of those buttons either?? LOL!!!!

Stupid question, but how long since you've checked/replaced the tranny fluid (i.e. leaks, etc)??

Was i suppose 2 leave that button in Scotty? Haven't noticed the light come on, will keep an eye out. Wasn't all that long ago replaced the fluid, I replaced the fluid hoping it would solve this problem, And of course it leaks, what sort of question is that Scotty? *L*

I have had this problem for ages ( yep, I'm slack ), and yeh I should go to a Specialist and get it looked at. But don't have the $$$$ to spend and I'm sure i will hear the dreaded words exchange / rebuild.

Have changed the valve body with a second hand one that had no known issues, but still done the same :(

Thanks guys for the input

Similar problem with mine. Would change from first to second, but not use third or fourth. Ended up pulling out the tranny and getting it rebuilt. When we did pull it out, opened the box for a looksee and found the plates were stuffed. Problem solvered for about 3K......

Hi Todd ,

Happened all the time. Box was pretty knackered. Glad I did take it out. Got peace of mind now knowing it's all good in there.

A little known fact is the Patrol & 300ZX share the same auto box (RE4R03A). The ratios are identical. Having done mine, I can tell you that swapping the internals is not a daunting task unless you are pulling down the valve body for a rebuild. The 300ZX box are usually cheaper to get from a wrecker and all you then need to do is swap the gear clusters, clutch and brake packs and away you go. Very easy to do

If you wish to use the 300ZX housing, just remove the extension housing, swap the output shafts (this means removing the gear clusters, clutch plates & brakes aswell) and bolt your transfer case straight up. Your computer (TCM) should plug & play but if it doesn't and you are sure the valve body is OK, swap that over aswell.

Depending on year of manufacture, it may or may not have a secondary revolution sensor (located at the top just behind the bell housing) for smoother changing. this will determine which housing you need
