View Full Version : SA Meet Up- anybody interested

TPC
15th June 2013, 01:08 AM
Just wondering if any of the SA members would be interested in a meet up for some 4wding and camp overnight.
We could possibly try the place Growler suggested up Callington way.
Be good to organize something out of fire season so we could have a camp fire.
Wouldn't mind putting a face to a few names on here.
I know there has been a few suggestions to do this before, how about we make it happen.

Anybody interested?

EDIT

Location -Little Desert National Park

Date -16th to 18th August
(Previous date suggested was too soon)

I was going to drive there on the Friday night after work and get there around 8.30pm. (not sure exactly where yet)
Not sure what others were thinking but I would just swag it.
I will probably bring a mate along as a passenger, wife wont be coming as she only likes camping with camper trailer.

Nothing wrong with a Prado, owned one myself for 12 years and did plenty with it. (backlash expected)

You have to come, we need the entertainment.

It'll just be more entertaining with g in a prado..
Yes not as challenging but I can gain access to some pretty nice little camp sites.. being in the mount I'm sorta restricted to where.. but I'd be happy to travel around 500k for a small meet up. Yorkes is in to.. that's my old stomping ground..

Did the border track the whole way through on the long weekend. Besides the 2 large dunes the track wasn't all that exciting until we got near the southern end where there are some serious mud holes. :) Only problem was this track was a bit of an after thought after camping at Wyperfeld for the weekend and I underestimated the time it would take so by the time we got to the really good stuff it was on dark and didn't want to push my luck too much on the first trip. Will be going back soon with a lot more time on my hands, at least I know where the interesting stuff is now :D

This hill used to be a good challenge when the sand was dry, you would loose momentum through the chicane then hit big holes at the top where people had dug in.

Unfortunately I believe this has been bypassed.

NatureGeeq

Yes, would certainly be more of a challenge with dry sand ;)

Definitely no VB allowed, they have a checking station when you enter SA where you have to get rid of all your fruit and VB before you enter.

I was out in little dessert on the weekend, a detour for a BBQ lunch with my kids on the way back from footy and netball at Kaniva, we did the Mt Moffatt track down to where it meets eat west track then continued along the border track to the bottom. I have Bridgestone discoverer AT's the with 60-70% tread and had no real issues, I was being a little cautious however being by myself and having a daughter who is a bit paranoid about getting bogged and off road driving in general and not wanting to completely turn her off it  some of the ruts I looked at were pretty bloody deep with probably the worst spot being the entrance in the sw corner, I went along to the next spot to the east to get out which was fine. If we keep getting rain some of the tracks could be a bit of a different story in another month or 2;) but shouldn't be too bad with a group :)
I would most likely be keen :-D

And the tyres I have are only HT, I'm guessing that means highway tyres. They were on the vehicle when I got it. I've used them on sand a fair bit, but apart from giving the Old Trol a bit of a thrashing when I first got it, I have done nothing serious, rock-wise or climbing. They are hopeless in mud or wet grass.

Mate you'll be fine on this trip I reckon.....There'll be enough blokes to pull you out if needed.
As long as they're light truck tyres, they're all good in sand. My muddies will be more likely to dig in than your H/T on the sand.
I'm locking this one in. I'm dead keen for a look around the area. Are we going to do border track too or just Little Desert?
Might take the Friday beforehand off too for the drive across.

Yea same with my Q, the 80's are well under so yea, a no go..

Ill help plan just incase I can come.

If your doing the boarder, allow 3 days.
Meet at pinaroo, weather ya camp there at the pub or make tracks on day 1 its up to you.
2nd day you do the rest of the boarder. And have a play in the national park. Camp 2nd night there. Then a casual pack up, bit more of a play then head for home..

Pinaroo is about 300k from Adelaide, little dessert closeted to 500k.
You can however is take a 4th day and visit the Southend for some further sand play time and travel some coast road on the way back to home..

I would not think you could book, in SA national parks camping is first in gets the site and payment is at self pay stations, I assume Vic is the same.
I think the best camping would be the in the western section if you don't mind bush camping without facilities, would be fewer people and more firewood.

Still plenty of time to generate a bit more interest
Need to change the thread title to get more Vic's interested, not sure how.

Swmbo and I will be in SA at the end of July and again at the end of August.

The dates don't match the meet up, but if anyone is interested in a quick meet and greet for a sherbert or a coffee, and put names to faces,
let me know.

I'm in the ancient age bracket by the way!!

Yes TP,

We are doing a month long remote trip in WA.

It's been a couple of years in the planning, and it is coming up to the leaving date rather rapidly!!

Sounds good, the planning for trips like that can be almost as good as the trip itself.
I am going on a 6 week trip into the Kimberley's next year and enjoying the planning now.

Hi all, I am keen, will have to see if I have my kids on the relevant weekend as this could have a bearing on feasibility depending on the location as they both play sport on a Saturday. Is the 16-18 of august a definite? Will be good to just get out with a group of like minded people :)

Cheers for now. Phil

I have no idea what's goin' on. I am still hoping the little desert is the go. I am going to have a look at the place in the holidays, if all goes well.

Well I'm out unless the patrol is done. Father in-law has basically said no. Well he's coming up with every excuse under the sun if why it can't go.
Which shits me as he was all for us taking it to the hi country on a trip planned late last year, but wifey was pregnant so trip got canned. But now we can't take it on a 2 day trip..
Anyway, gotta bust a nut now to get it done.. plan now is section at a time. So I am only a few days from being back on road at the most..
PITA...

Not exactly slow from my perspective. In simple terms its a tank of fuel to get ther a second tank to get home and i am stuck on the lovely govt hand out till i find something $wise. Besides it about 8+ hours home to there long drive.

Now the Flinders/Horseshoe Rim would be more interesting but sorry no sand.
Just like the idea as its closer to home:biggrin:

There has not been a lot of interest from either side of the border.
I am still keen to do something on 16th-18th Aug.

Kallen how long do you need to fix up your GQ? Pull your finger out.

At the moment I have stuff all recovery gear. Have a 9500 winch with steel cable, no snatch block and no tree protector. Wont have a jack either. Other than that I should be right to go.

I've got recovery gear MN if you wish to borrow it.

And I bloody hope the patrol is done by mid August. But the list keeps growing..

Doesn't look like much happening.
Seeing as there doesn't seem to be much action here, and my daughter has her guide camp this weekend (wife will be shirty having to do transport with our other 2) I might head up to the snow with the Vic crew the following weekend.

My local 4by club has a trip happening on the same weekend and it will be 600k further for for me if Callington is the go instead of the Little Desert. Meeting up in the high country would be great, but I still haven't got AT tyres. GRRRR...

Good deduction. Its a long way for some of us.

Why not aim for something most SA guys can get to easily.

Hint Flinders Sept when it looks good and not totally brown.
