I hope this helps anyone with a rattle/groan coming from their gearbox behind a 2.8 or 3.0 petrol.
If you're noticing a rattle at idle that sounds like its coming from the bellhousing, its most likely not the clutch. If you play around and you find the noise is only with the clutch engaged, it is a gearbox bearing. Also if you notice the noise goes away on 4th gear, it is a countershaft bearing. I had this bearing fail in my gearbox, and after pricing up various rebuilds, I just swapped it with a low K second handie. The metal in the gearbox oil is a dead giveaway.
