Well it has started. I have been thinking for a while about making up some protection for my Safari for a while and have been doing lots of research and looking at lots of pictures.

The plan is to start in the middle with sliders and then work out to the front and then swing round to the rear. The front bar will be joined to the sliders with some fender guards and the rear bar will be linked to the sliders as well with bar work protecting the whole rear quarter from the top of the arch down with one bar coming up just in front of the rear lights and then another one coming up at the wheel arch, all the side bars front and rear will be welded in place forming a solid barrier right around the wagon. Just like an exo but only going up to the top of the wheel arch's.

The front and rear bar's are going to be made out of 50mm med wall pipe and 40mm med wall pipe, the sliders out of 40mm med wall pipe and then mounted to the chassis with 80x10 flat bar sandwich plates

Tonight I had a few spare hours so I have managed to get half way through the first slider. I will post up some pictures as I go and when I have figured out how

I am now half way through the first slider and will post up some pictures when I work out how.

Good stuff, i look forward to seeing this mate. Maybe weigh the bits as you build so you can keep a track of weight

I won't be weighing it I am working the weight out of the steel list weight. for the 40mm is 3.08kg per meter and the 50mm is 3.5kg per meter. This means the sliders come in at just under 15kg per side. I will be keeping a telle as I go. It will be interesting to see the total weight at the end

Are you using seamless or thick walled steam pipe.
You made 3 red crosses cause nothing happened lol

If your able over there weld plates to chassis with 1/2 unc holes in 4 corners
then sliders can bolt to them, they were strong enough on my other 4x4 as
jacking point, could lift whole side of 4x4 up. Plus being seperate could also use as air tanks

The pipe is med wall seamless. Over here if I weld to the chassis I then have to get it certified which at this stage I am trying to avoid.

I;m not to sure what I've done wrong with the pictures if anyone can point me a good direction for posting pics that would be great

Right slight change of plan. Instead of using sandwich plates I have made up U sections for the rear and middle mounts and have made the front mounts up out of some 65 x 65 shs that goes in to the body mount. The U sections will each have 2x M10 8.8 bolts at the top and the front mount will have 2x M10 8.8's bolting them in place. All going well the sliders will be all painted and bolted on this weekend

Hey mate, your linking from photobucket isn't working for some reason.

The URL that you copied from their site is strange as after the URL of the picture it has ?sort=3&o=0 which is not a proper prefix for showing pictures. I even tried to delete that prefix but it still didn't work.

That's strange mate....When you are on PB you should just click on the picture and get the URL of the image and paste it in using the http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/editor/insertimage.png button.

Made some more progress tonight and got the drivers side slider all ready to paint . Had a bit of a play around with angles and decided that I quite like them a bit of slop

Yep I'm pretty happy with them. Tested them out as a jacking point tonight and they hardly flexed at all :D.
I am off to the West Coast this weekend so will give them a good work out there in the mud and the bush and the rivers: Yahoo!:

Mate, I'm so jealous of you. I've had plans to build a set of protection steps ever since I bought the Old Trol, but I keep finding other ways to spend the money I save for them. Your work looks great.

Yeah I'm really stocked at how well they came up.
They were pretty cheap to make all up they used 10.5m of pipe, some scrape 6mm plate I had lying round or you could use 2.5m of 6x80mm flat bar, and 200mm of 65x65 shs, 2x m12x100 8.8 bolts and nylocks, 4x m12 x120mm 8.8 bolts and nylocks and if I had worked consistently they would have been done in less than a day not including painting

It seems like a long time since I started this, no excuses just life getting in the way as it dose from time to time.
On Sunday I removed the chrome bumper ends off the front leaving just the factory winch basket. This afternoon I was able to get away from work a bot early so I started on making the new tube bar. So far this afternoon I got the drivers corner done and half of the passengers. All going well on Friday I will get the rest of the passenger corner done, the hoops made up and welded on get it prepared for paint by the end of Friday.
I will take some pictures as I go and put them up

Finished up and fitted my new bar yesterday so thought I would through some picks
The starting point, the bar is designed to bolt directly to the Nissan factory pto winch basket using existing factory caged nuts

Starting to think about my rear bar and have a few questions. In our 10yr plan we intend to come over to Australia with the Safari and spend 6 months driving around.
What I am looking for advice on is do I need to have the ability to carry two spare tyres or is one sufficient.

Hey mate, one is normally okay but you never know... people doing a lot of outback touring will take 2.
The rear bar I have has the ability to carry 2 spares but at the moment I am just using the spare bolted to the door still. One day down the track I will buy the swing out wheel carriers.

great bar work mate. you could make room for 2 spares and a Jerry can holder.

Chuck a spare tyre rubber only touring up top light maybe mate and some tubes in the back next to ‘tyre pliers’ for slow relaxed enjoy the views [emoji106][emoji106]
EDIT: Steel rims only....tyre pliers will potentially fark poofy rims :-)
