My automatic transmission has run beautifully from day one with the original ATF that came in it from the factory (GU 2001 with 180 000 km on the clock).

So why do I have air bubbles on the dipstick every time I check the level?
And why is the level way over the hot mark even though I have never added any fluid?

Being a firm believer of the adage " If it aint broke dont fix it" I have ignored these facts for a long time, but Im just curious to know if its just my GU or has someone else noticed the same thing?

One of two reasons, Too Much or Too Little Transmission Fluid. Not enough fluid causes the pump to suck air causing something like cavitation.

Ok, how does one determine if its too much or too little? Bearing in mind that it is factory filled and has never leaked!

As far as I know the lifespan of ATF depends on the conditions of operation, if its too dark or smells burnt then its dead, otherwise it just keeps going!

The ATF in my GU is Nissan D-matic, and Im not clear on what the Dexron equivalent is, anybody know?

Can one mix Nissan D-Matic with Dexron III ?

I wouldn't risk it. Gearbox rebuilds are expensive.
