I have a 94 GQ wagon, Auto 4.2lt. When I park on our drive which has a slope the Trol rests on the gearbox. When I start it up to go again it is often hard to put into D. It clunks out of park.
My question is, does this damage the gearbox (or other mechanisems)?
Is there something I can do to prevent this or should I not worry about it.

Not sure of the technical details, but have always been taught that parking on slopes and letting the gearbox (as opposed to the handbrake) take the weight of the car places undue stress on it.

Righto ... tiime for someone to provide the technical details!! lol

Hi Baileys,

What I do is pull up the handbrake, go to neutral, take my foot of the brake pedal and let the weight of the car rest fully on the handbrakes then shift into park. This works quite well.

As said above it does place a lot of stress on the parking pawl inside the auto. If you let the handbrake take the weight before putting it in park (as GXR described) you shouldn't have a problem.

Definitely agree with GXR. Put handbrake on first before putting into park and your tranny will be happier :D
