hi guys n gals

I currently have 1999 td42 gu coil cab. seal behind harmonic balancer has been leaking on highway trips when travelling around 110klms/h. i currently have it in peices but cant seem to get the harmonic balancer off to replace the seal. I'm using a three prong puller with no luck

does anyone have any ideas as to how to get it off.

i have read some other posts about this issue with the 2.8l & 3.0l but nothing in regards to the 4.2l & it seems the 4.2l has a different harmonic balancer. any ideas could be helpful

Three prong puller should do the job. Silly question, but you have removed the bolt in the centre right? I speak from experience!

Watch the puller it can damage the rubber What ive done before is put the nut back on backwards(to protect the crank) and with a brass drift and a hammer hit the outer egde of the damper as its a taper lock design by using a puller all you are doing is pulling the damper tighter against the hub and keyway Cheers Adam

Thelma had the oil seal problem, I gave her to the 'Godfather' to do the replacement this week. Seems my work up at the Cape, escorting between Cairns and Weipa helped get bull dust into the seal and it wore through enough to cause a minor leak that I paid no notice of. A month ago I was working out of Darwin and the belt started screaming... nothing obvious and it was new so I guessed I had a screaming pulley and would deal with it when I got back to Queensland. But she lost 3 litres of oil in 200 kms so I camped up and let her cool overnight. In the morning I wiped up the oil around the block and started her up and found the source of the leak - the crank seal. I kept the oil topped up and limped her another 4000km (another job back to Darwin and then to Gladstone) then home last Friday.

The godfather was surprised at the degree of wear on the seal but she seems to be good now.

This is a really old thread but just for the info:

Doesn't the TD42 have a cone, same as the sd33, you need to tap the pulley to loosen the cone before removing the harmonic. looky here http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1366&bih=601&q=td42+harmonic+balancer+removal&oq=td42+harmonic+balancer&gs_l=img.1.1.0i24l2.2559.12049.0.16348.22.7.0.15.1 5.0.274.1883.2-7.7.0....0...1ac.1.26.img..0.22.1983.LqDZIk5DEIo
Don't forget to loktite everything.
Cheers, the ferret.
