Yeah mate I would be interested in that. What are you thinking, weekend or something a bit longer. I've been thinking of googs track or Gawler rangers lately. We could do either of those in a four day weekend. Or maybe a one or two night jaunt in the mid north somewhere. Times another thing. Weekend of 5th Sep is a long weekend for me. I've got trips planed for Oct and Nov then it's Xmas then we start looking into the new year when tempretures need to be taken into account.

I have also posted this in the members meet up thread. I thought I would put it here as well for us South Aussies.
This is what I'm thinking of guys some time next April, May or June some time after the heat of summer. From what I've seen in other post a firm date is needed or nothing happens. So if I give it a range to start with then firm up a date if I get any feed back, or not in a couple of weeks. At lest that gives people some certainty.
We could meet up in Port Augusta (BP truck stop Hwy 1) Sat afternoon then make our way to Pildappa Rock (about 3 hours west on Eyre Highway) to set up camp for the night. Need to go through Wudinna before 10:00 pm so we can juice up before the servo closes. Day 2 Head towards Gawler Rangers and set up camp in the national park probably Kokodo camp(about 40km) Explore the park for rest of the day. Day 3 head to the east of the park till we get to the boundary (about depending on where we go) and drive along Public Access Route 11(about 85km) This will lead us to Drekurmi Rd. Where we head north to Public Access Route 23(about 40km) This we lead us north east to Nonning. Hear we can follow the Nonnung Rd South East all the way to Iron Knob(about 72km). From Iron Knob it's up to you what you do. Head home or stay at Iron Knob, Whyalla (about 50km) or Port Augusta (about 70km) for the night to head home the next day. A lot of driving in a few days but that's what we do.
Any feed back welcome.

Just a little bit more info for our trip.
Last fuel stop is Wudinna (ULP, LPG and Diesel) closes at 10pm so we will be there in plenty of time this is about 50km from our first camp. Longest distance with out fuel, allowing for park exploring could be up to 550km or with a 40km detour to Kimba (7am - 8pm ULP, LPG, Diesel) that could be brought down to 410km.
What ever people are comfortable with.

Chubba
30th August 2015, 04:19 PM
This track is only suitable for 4WDs and links a popular route from the
Gawler Ranges Mail Road to Kimba in the south. From Nonning to Kimba is approximately 85kms, with the PAR crossing through a working pastoral lease for 55kms in the southern Gawler Ranges region.
The northern turn-off is 72kms north west of Iron Knob, about 1km past the Nonning Homestead. To access the track from Kimba, travel 8kms along the Buckleboo Road to Drekumi Road, then north for 20kms.
Camping is permitted within 250 metres of the track but not within 500 metres of a stock watering point or within 1km of a building.
Please respect any stock or infrastructure that you may encounter along the route.
This is a remote area – ensure you are self-sufficient with adequate water, food, fuel and medical supplies. Also ensure your vehicle has spares and reliable communications.
This is one of the PARs we will be doing on the trip. Sounds good.

Is anybody in SA doing a trip in the next few weeks for a meet up?
I would be keen to tag along on a weekend trip. I missed out on the Gawler Rangers one. Are any of you guys planning another trip?

No. It's been mentioned around the fire but nothing set.

You do know that the start of the Border Track (northern end) is closer to Adelaide than it is to Mt Gambier.

When I did the trip, We started on the west side of the reserve near Pertendi hut. We then followed that track to to centre track, and turned north. we then turned east to Nanam Well. Followed that through to near Scorpion Springs, and turned south onto the Border Track.

https://www.southernmallee.sa.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/TRACKS_MALLEE.pdf

We dropped in at Red Bluff, and continued on to home base.

We have usually entered from the Mallee Highway and stayed at Pine Hut on a Friday night, stayed half way down on the Saturday and driven out on Sunday to go home.
Had a look around at the other tracks one time but they were like driving on a normal dirt road.

The Border track was pretty easy as well when dry. Although we nearly had a Disco roll when its front tyre got caught in a savagely deep rut. Has anyone driven the western part of Gnarkat?

How can an entire state be blacked out? I understand that extreme weather events happen and so on but the entire state.
Looks like being out till 5pm tomorrow. Lordy Lordy.

Major backbone / transmission lines knocked out probably. Considering the winds / hail... It can happen.
We've just been put on state of "alert" here in Vic. (I work on powerlines) .

Major lightning strike in the port Agusta station has blowing the connections to vic as a safety feature..
So we're out..
It'll take a while to get the connections back..
They should just fire up the gas turbines..
But our gruberment has been rolling back all the infastructure so we have fark all..

Then it may have simply been all the major lines which are now bent like bananas.....

Those things are built and designed to withstand hurricanes.
For them to go over like that.... either
A/ Lack of maintanance , rusty/snapped bolts. All it would take is one tower to go and then you have domino effect kick in.

B/ The wind must have been absolutely extraordinary ... Which I doubt.
