G'day guys.

Well Santa was kind and I scored a GoPro HERO3 Silver. Niiice!!

It seems that there are a few of us that have this great bit of kit and I think we need a thread for them.

Let's chat GoPro!

What do you like, any little tricks to help me with my toy?

Any decent links to eBay adds?

Anyone want to do a group buy of stuff out of USA and save some postage-???

Cheers MR

Would be interested in seeing any short movies that you guys have shot on your GoPros?? Maybe we need a GoPro Footage thread too?

This is going to be great!

Daz use your iPhone as a remote for the camera, download the gopro app and go from there. Read the instructions on the gopro booklet thing though because its a pain to set up

MudRunnerTD
15th January 2013, 10:14 PM
A mate was saying the App is good but you have to set the thing up every time you use it and if you shut the App down or time out you have to go through the pair setup again.

He also said he liked the remote in the car and mounted it to the middle of the steering wheel for easy access. Still thinking of grabbing it.

I like the App instead of the LCD rear screen though? What are your thoughts on that?

Winnie
15th January 2013, 10:17 PM
That's not true mine fires up straight away every time. Yeah having the LCD screen seems like a big waste of battery to me. There is about a 3 second delay to the app but really it's no big deal if its just using it to frame a picture or something.

I used mine couple weeks ago out wheeling, got a mount on my bull bar next to the winch that the camera clicks into. Got some good footage of some hill climbs and decents . Also mount it to the quad bike too. I have an android app so what i do is mount my phone on my dash and can view what the camera sees. Very techy way to 4x4!

The remote is ok the app is good however when you have them on you need wifi on and that means alot less filming time as batt runs flat quicker

Need to buy a couple of good mounts. Want one for the bull bar and the internal grab rail... I think that is 2 different mounts I think? Also a suction mount.

So if I mount his for instant to my roof light rack on the GQ and used the App I could see where the thing is pointing etc?

Yeah or in the GU there is no Holy chit bar but a Grab Handle on the A pillar.

So the large mount for the bull bar will close down around say your thumb?

Better off with one 64GB then you don that've to keep track of two cards as they are tiny and easy to lose!!!
I got my suction mount off eBay for something like $20, thought it would be a copy but its genuine. Didn't say anywhere in the add that it's genuine. Haven't tried it out yet

I was out at the meetup on the weekend and used the Hero3 for the first time. pretty cool little jigger.

When using the windscreen mount i had to flip the camera and film upside down..... Thinking it would be an easy flip at the other end..... Kinda.

Here is a Link to the program you have to download from the GoPro Site and the instructions on how to flip it. take a little processing time and you are making a duplicate.

Here is a Great little You Tube video on using an internal Camera function to set your camera to Up or Upside Down! Much Much better!

yeah cheers 3dogs, looks like a good little unit.

There are quite a few guys running GoPros on this site now so this thread is to help them.....And ME! get my head around this great little unit and find good links and tutorials to get the most out of these units.

The GoPro will film in 1080 for as long as it has enough memory, i am running 2 32gig micro SD cards which will be pretty cool i think.

Hey Ben,

I bought a few different mounts for mine mate and could near on mount it anywhere now. i have 2 different Grab rail styles for the bull bar or even the light bar i reckon no trouble, or the grab rail inside.

I am assuming your using the perspex as a mount to use the suction cup style mount to?

Make sure once you have the memory card that the first thing you do is the update as the wifi will not work and wont link to your phone for a remote control unless the update is done. Found out the hard way!!

I bought 2 Micro SD cards from China and they arrived in 3 days mate!they are Sandisk Brand and i think they will be fine. Saved a heap of cash. ;)

Also what I got was the tripod mount and you can mount it to whatever you have an m8 possibly an m6 bolt mounted to. Spring clamps work great. Ill post some pics of the mounts I've made for mine

MudRunnerTD
29th January 2013, 07:16 PM
Yeah I bought the tripod mount too. Very handy as it then gives you a thread option as cbates says. I have an extension pole off a level tool I have and it screwed straight to the tripod mount so have it for an extension stick. Nice one.

Also I shot some vid on the weekend and had it out of he case and hand held. It was really sensitive and shaky! Get the handle post for it if your going hand held as it will allow you to hold it much firmer.

MudRunnerTD

Winnie
29th January 2013, 09:20 PM
Yeah front quarter, bonnet vibrates too much I had it on there at first. I think the lower the better too. Mine was too low and watching back the videos got smacked about by little branches and stuff sticking out.

Hey Ben

Actually this is what happened to me mate. I headed to the meetup after recieving my new memory sticks in the mail that day. I did not do the immediate update that is required out of the box. When I went to view the footage when I got back if came up as an error.

Fortunately I had a second SD card and used the second blank card to run the update off the GoPro site. After that I put the other used card in and there they were.

Have you done the upgrade mate?

Yeah I have done the upgrades. I have already stuffed around with it prior to this, but my laptop couldnt handle the highest quality so I dropped it to 1080. Yesterday was round 2, which is gone :(.
On another note I had another crack at it today, It works!! it was just a drive around town with the skeleton case on it trying to see what the sound is like.

MudRunnerTD

Yeah I know but the standard case is water proof. The skeleton case I have to buy separately. The only one I have seen for a GoPro 3 was $120! I can get a new water proof one for about $65 and think I can get the dremel out and make my own??

12th February 2013, 10:41 PM
Hi all,

sorry for the rant... i get a bit excited sometimes... Thought this info may help some.

I've had the original HD hero gopro for about 2 1/2 years now and have only used it on the 4x4 trips we go on. The link to my vids (http://vimeo.com/davekappa)is in my signature below. The '11, '12 high country and the '12 navrun vids mainly use the go pro. Sometimes iPhone footage and happy snap cameras from other peeps.

Back then I did a lot of research and spoke to a few friends of mine on a camera forum about the best setting for this unit. They all came back and said that for what I needed it for, 720p was the best setting. Plus it gave that slight fish eye shot that I like. The all agreed that 1080 was great but the chances are you'll eat the battery and you're SD card won't last as long. Realistically, can you tell the difference? I can't, so it has stayed on 720 ever since.

I suggest (if you want to get anal) test all the settings out and write down what clip number is for what setting. That way you know what you actually like to watch as the end result.

I have 2x32GB SanDisc cards. The reason I opted for this is that the 64's were (and possibly still are) unreliable. I had 1 fail me and all my footage lost when I first bought the go pro. Painfull! Even with 1 x 32GB, I haven't run out of space yet.

Having said that, I also upload all the footage onto my iPad every night in case my SD card goes again... Better safe then sorry. For this, I use iPad camera connection kit (http://store.apple.com/au/product/MC531ZM/A/apple-ipad-camera-connection-kit). Also handy for getting stuff from your iPhone to your iPad.

I have the suction cup mount and over this period I have tried mounting it in many different places. Back then there were no wifi remotes so you had to be able to reach it by sticking your hand out the window and turning it on and off. The best place that I have found to mount mine thus far is top right corner of the windscreen (If you're looking over the bonnet, above the rego sticker). I think that this gives the best perspective of what you are going through and the land surrounding. The other good one for river crossings is behind the front wheel arch.

So I didn't lose the camera while we were driving, I bought one of those orange disc lock reminder cords (http://www.motorsport-tools.com/sealey-motorcycle-disc-lock-spring-reminder-spr12-p-248842.html) that they use on motor bikes. One end goes over the mount before the camera goes on it and the other gets looped around the bull bar, roof rack, side mirror... Whatever it can basically. Touch wood, it's never come off or got bent out of place no matter what we have been through... So far.

Accessories to date are:
- wifi remote; once set up after updates, works perfectly. No longer do I have have to brave the elements to turn it on and off.
- extra battery
- LCD screen so I can see what the hell I am doing... I think with the new apps and a wifi backpack you don't need this anymore as you can see what the camera is seeing through the app.
- 12v battery charger that is constantly charging the non working battery. Cable ties work a treat to hold the batteries in place whilst driving
- extra mounting clips... Just incase

My next project is to get constant power to the unit by drilling a hole in the side of the waterproof case, run a usb cable through it into the charging hole and the seal with a grommet and silicon. See how we go with that. Anybody have any ideas?

I love the camera and ill be getting the hero3 later this year to run as a second camera on someone else's car... And I'll use the wifi remote to activate for more footage.

Anyhoos, hope this helps, apologies for the rant.

Cheers, Dave

2x32 or 4x16 SD cards are my preference over a single 64. Once bitten, twice shy with data storage!!!

Were you guy using "class 10" cards when you had 64G card fail ?

Ducer, i modified my own case to take constant usb power (you can buy a 3D case modified for this off ebay) you need to make sure you have a "fully charged" battery in the camera before starting , otherwise it won't work properly.

I also made my own pan and tilt platform so i could put the camera on a pole and adjust the shot without pulling the pole down (this worked great), i wanted to use it all to capture a high, wide angle footage over a long period, so didnt want to be changing batteries either.

During power supply testing, i drove around in the car for hours (much longer that a battery lasts anyway) it worked great, when used out in the field i found it unreliable, and so gave up on the idea.

They have just released new software update for my camera, i may get this updated when i have time, and test the whole set up again ?

I can replay ,erase any footage not required, sits fine on the inside of windscreen with small 30x25 sceen, in records to mini SD card. Also noticed SCA have a camera for $129.
My camera only cost $50 and as I've said records in 2 min loops, is infra red for night stuff and if left on will record any movement around my patrol. pic in previous post

That's great value, I paid that for silver. I also bought a book from Amazons on how to get the most from it, excellent book and cheap. Buy all your bits from eBay.........much much cheaper. Enjoy the camera :)

I've just coupled my GoPro 2 with the wifi bakpak i bought ages ago, and been sitting in the box ever since. Very handy seeing what you're recording and controlling it with a smart phone and such. Before that used to be so annoying coming home uploading the vids and finding out the videos didn't come out as good due to camera positioning etc.

Yes I did on my patrol I mounted it upside down on tje bottom of my bullbar, facing the front tyre and suspension. Got a view of the front end flexing and articulating . It was awesome.

I had my one mounted under my Navara in an attempt to identify a knocking noise. Zippy tied to something.
Camera and video worked perfect but never did find the issue.

What craps me off is GoPro sell the Black edition on their website for $329 plus shipping. And surprise-surprise to ship to Australia they charge nearly $100. What a crock. I can get the very same item shipped for $35.

The thing that put me off that sort of dolly, is that you need a dead flat surface ??, so not great if wanting to film outdoors.

I recon a home made track system would give some cool shots tho !

Does the gopro wide angle lens capture any of the trolley in the bottom of the shot, when shooting level, or do you hang it off some mounts so it clears the wheels ?

Hangs off mounts, I'll get some pics posted up soon for you. Yes, a flat surface is needed, but I like your tracks idea, I think I could build a set to suit.....

Mine still pee's me off every time I use it, yesterday I set up rig shot pole mount off the front of the car, spent ages setting it all up, then needed to see what the camera was capturing, but do you think I could get a preview to work !!!

So after restarting/connecting everything many times over I gave up, I undid everything, and just stuck the gopro on the roof in a position I can easy guess the viewing angle, still no preview, after driving for 5 min the preview came alive (yay !), but then of course the gopro battery was now low, (because of all the time stuffing around trying to get the preview to work), so I had to get it down off the roof to fit another battery :frown:

I have learnt that owning a gopro you have to be patient, don't expect it to work every time, don't let the battery die while recording (this can corrupt the files and card beyond repair especially if you turn it back on), carry many spare batteries, only format the SD card in the gopro (not the pc), if something is happening "now" and you want to record it on video, grab your phone.

The great thing about not really "loving" my go pro, is im never afraid to put it in harms way, and they are tough (well the case is), and when they do work, you can capture some great footage.

Yeh it was actually raining a little, so hard to capture anything decent really, I knew you would know that track Troy, ive done it a few times before , but it was nasty on "wet" rock (lol)

Im used to the gopro now, and know what it can and can't do, ive also got a HD dash cam now, its in a fixed position, so will be able to capture stuff and know its at the right angle, and the battery wont go flat (also has a lower res rear cam, but the back window on a GU gets dusty so quick, a rear cam wont be much good off road)

When I ask people about their gopro, they always comment on how reliable it is "every time" the have used it, then I ask how often they use it ?, and the reply is normally ,oh about 2 or 3 times now (lol), know body seems to use one on a regular basis out in the feild, like every second weekend to capture everything exciting they may do, you don't see many people using them, or footage posted from a gopro, especially considering how many people have one, I mean, where's all the patrol action from the gopro owners on this forum, should be heaps of it, so I ask the question, why don't people use one when they paid so much for it ?

Mine will work mint in my lounge room, its when you get to the bottom of that really steep hill, every ones waiting for you, you want to video it, you need to set up the camera fast, that's when it will become a pain, and be more hassle than its worth wasting your time to get it up and running, so you end up giving up out of frustration.

Its a $500 camera, compared to any other electronics for $500 (cameras or otherwise) it is not that user friendly/reliable IMO.

If you can get it all set up, angled and working so you just have to hit record it works well, but, on standby it will eat the battery, so wont be long and you have to set it up again, these days I use mine in the same two locations (roof and drag link), this way I can guess the angle pretty well without any preview.

TBH Im one pf those people who rarely use their go pros. In fact the last time i used it was when we did a night trip to glasshouse at the beginning of the year. Admittedly tho, that was the last time i did a big off road trip. Ive only done max 6 wheeling trip this past year. Id use my go pro more, but theres no point me filming my house just so i can use it.

I just pulled mine out the draw to see if it would set up easily, i have gotten a new phone and just wanted to see, it worked fine, less then 20 seconds and i had preview and was filming. Your welcome to borrow mine steve or troy and see how it goes, see whether its yours that is buggy or its a go pro thing. I doubt ill be going wheeling until next year so its just sitting here.

I only have one mate with one and he never has any issues with his but his is an old version possibly the first one, it's got me wondering if yours is faulty? Maybe you should try lachlan's to compare?

I don't think its faulty as such, I think its just the way they are, they should be called GoPro-Am (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amateur_professionalism) (lol), look , I can hook it up right now at home, and I bet it will give me a preview without fail just like that, and it will all work perfect time and time again, I can also send and capture gopro footage onto my ph, but it seems to know the difference between testing, and when you want to capture some action in a hurry or when it really counts.

Id like a Hero 4 with a built in LCD screen, this would at least solve most of the preview issues, plus they have advertised faster wifi and pootooth as well, of course they also changed the battery design, so the 5 batteries I have for my Hero 3 wont work in it, so id need more batteries and chargers etc.

Think ill just see how the dash cam works out

I decided to go for the "Contour Roam 3" as opposed to the go-pro...it is water proof up to 30 feet without a case....is cylindrical , so easier to mount on the side of things without sticking out too far...half the price and very much competition to go-pro....but only time will tell for I haven't got right into it yet or have much knowledge on it...

Just over 500 with the parking power meter supply box, camera/s is not waterproof, so inside the car only, supplied camera cable is a MC- card (mini coax)

I didn't go with the LCD one because you want the front lens in the middle of your car (well I do) the LCD screen did not look like it will fit behind the rear vision mirror (as I have mine) Plus you could not use it there anyway, I didn't want the LCD screen lower than the rear vision mirror blocking my view, or annoying me at night, and ive heard of people getting busted having a GPS mounted there so may not be legal ?

If you mount it just above the dash it will still block your view, and the cameras view ahead may be too low for a lifted patrol for car park incidents etc ?, but im not sure, The one with the LCD, does have a full HD rear cam, and I like the idea of the screen, but I would have to have it somewhere I cant really see/use the screen, or have it way off centre , I never tried a LCD one in the car , but mine fits completely behind the rear view mirror and blocks zero view, I plan to paint the back of the mirror black so the camera is even harder to see, I think the idea is you don't play with them all the time, more let them do their thing until you need to retrieve footage.

Cheers I think you have the right unit for the patrol and I would set it up the same.
I'm shopping for one for a Renault master single cab so plenty of window room and I was wanting a recorder and a reverse camera so I could get both in one. I rarely drive it at night so the LCD won't bother me much but that unit is $600 on ebay with the parking box included so I'll have to think about it

I'm getting a canopy fitted and vinyl sides so could maybe look at a acrylic window on the back but it would depend on the cord length also as the trays a good 4m
