View Full Version : GQ Petrol Air Filter Box (Housing)

G'day all

quick one - anyone know where I could get my hands on a replacement air filter box for the GQ? As per most that are on LPG, mine backfired at some stage and has blown the guts out of it ... now I'm getting the snorkel fitted next week, and not much point having a snorkel when the water will just flow freely straight into the bottom of the air box that is there!!

I've tried patrolapart in Melbourne, some wreckers and about 3 companies advertising Nissan parts on eBay, but alas to no avail. I did hear of someone out there doing specialised air filter boxes in stainless specifically for cars on LPG, but can't find reference on the net anywhere. Apparently one from a VN commodore will slot in with some 'minor' tweaking, so that is an option also - if anyone has retro-fitted one, can you let me know what make/model it came from and what you had to do to fit it.

Thanks a million in advance.
Scotty

Righto - after ringing about 25 wreckers and sending off about a dozen emails to online distributors (even overseas) I've resolved myself to the fact that if anyone wants an air box for petrol GQ, then fork out $484 to Nissan for one!! No joke, for a molded piece of plastic!!!!

Sooooooo ... being the stubborn individual I am, I did a bit of research and as it turns out, you can retro-fit the air filter from a VN (VP, VR or VS also for that matter) Holden ... measured up my box today, went to the wrecker and measured up the Holden one - same size essentially, just needs a bit of tweaking to get want I want - primarily, the top outlet pipe hole on the holden one needs to be filled with a new hole placed further back in the assembly (it fits, and has to be done due to my Air Con lines), the original hole will get the full treatment being plated both sides for strength and about 74 kilograms of silicone!!! lol ... the inlet pipe is in the right spot, but is rectangular, and I dont know the last time you guys checked, but a round 95mm pipe doesn't fit that neatly onto a 80x50mm rectangular hose ... go figure!!! So some surgical work required there to graft a pipe together also ... other than that, the spare part cost me $25 and I'm going to 'share' the labour of customising the box, so expect it might cost another $80-100 ($125 fitted in total as opposed to $484 - I'm ok with that!!!). I'll post some pics once I start and let you know how it fares.

Ciao for now

yeah - too late for me. Paid $450 for new airbox before I found out about the commodore option. I did Cape Tork this year so I didn't want to skimp with all the river crossing we did.

I did research the LPG backfire - I am now a NAZi with my sparkplugs, always colder the spec and with a wider gap - 1.1 instead of .8/.9. I only run high octane fuel so detonation isn't a prob. Helped with fuel economy on the lpg as well.

Thanks mate - sent you PM about the setup for LPG also - the new air box is being built to be INDESTRUCTIBLE ... maybe ...

yeah, i have seen a few being home made on forums out of alloy etc that look awsome. I will probably wait until i blow this one up before i make one out of cryptonite...

sent reply.

Same goes - heard about the alloy ones, but can't locate them anywhere, found some information regarding the build of this one (out of the VN - VP, VR and VS are all the same also), so hopefully pretty straight forward ... hopefully!!!

He sure did. It's a wonder he didn't put pick up here. He is on Hols at mo, so Scott should be back soon.

Air Box Modification (VN Commodore Modified Box)

Well, it took some effort for the boys who installed it, but still worked out heaps cheaper than getting one through Nissan and as per the photos, whilst it looks like Frankenstein, it's probably stronger!! lolol ...

You can see where they blocked up the outlet on the top to rejoin the stock Nissan one, and same goes for the rectangular inlet on the bottom (plated up) and moved to the front. Nothing you can't do with a a bit of zincanneal and a kilo of sikaflex!! lolol ... They also removed the hose/line mounts etc from the old box and pop rivetted onto the retro fitted one to keep it clean ...

You can see the balance pipe on the inlet below for LPG/Snorkel setup (5/8 connection/pipe) from the top of the inlet to the back of the mixer.

Sorry lostgirl, only just saw this one - still catching up with posts!! How did you go? PM me if you need more details/photos for your mechanic ... It's a little fidgety/painful, but HEAPS cheaper than a genuine unit - hasn't missed a beat as it were, and let's face it, I'm a typical "open the bonnet, crack a tinnie, and just look at stuff under the hood" kind of guy, and this airbox has promoted oodles of good conversation!!! LOL ...

I recently was told about this problem, by my gas guy when he noticed my airbox was stuffed, I did a bit of searching and found this

Yeah I ordered one of the Alloy ones too, I should receive it early next week will post some pics when After installation.

Some one on page 1 mentioned having a larger spark-plug gap and lower temp rating is this sarcasm that I didn't get? because my understanding is you want a smaller gap and higher temp rating.

An experts advice would be appreciated.

Air filter - very easy mate. Should be clips on the side of the box, undo them, remove old filter, replace with new filter, and clip box back together ...

no backfire ,gas is not hooked up bottle is missing no outer shroud either so no clips just bare filter with a small spacer bolting and screwed down it was just the two hoses one of which i knew was gas and had to come off to remove the filter but once it was unscrewed unbolted and the gas hose removed filter was off , noticed it badly needs an outer shroud cover whatever but thats another project roadworthy is first that stuff comes second .

but thanks for the reply.

mine just blew a big chunk of the air filter box out, and cracked the side of it, hence i love the way that the alloy one is made if you look at the side of it it has a blow back valve/plate

Installed yesterday. Any suggestions of where to get the right hose to connect the air box to the snorkel?

It was a bit of a sh!t fight to install as it arrived with the mountings all bent out of shape, so I could really only recommend it if you can pick it up from the company.

you can buy watertight fittings and hose/ alloy pipe that are the right size from autobarn ( elbows etc )you can get supercheap auto has them as well, they are the ones the guys use to put the fancy filters on commodores etc

http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Silicone-Hose-45-Degree-63mm-x-280mm.aspx?pid=155210&menuFrom=4083#Description

they sell all sorts of different sizes and angles etc

you could also use these if you dont have the fittings to attach it to the snorkel on the guard

http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Plastic-Filter-Adaptor-CALPA5-SFA5.aspx?pid=155261&menuFrom=4083#Description

we used some of these to make a new duct system on my mates maverick that has a carb/gas, was very easy and were able to plum it all the way to the snorkel. his works fine and is water tight
