hi,

I picked up my Patrol today and as promised in my introduction, I have lost of questions! First of all though, what a beast. Really great to drive, 4.2inj petrol engine is silky smooth and really torquey, bit like a quite diesel engine!

My first question is about the 4WD system. My Patrol is a 1992 GQ (possibly ST, but now sure - see other thread!). It has 2H, 4H, 4L positions on the 4WD lever. In the 4H/L positions is the centre diff locked or still open?

If locked - then I presume 4H/L can only be used on the slippy stuff.
If open - then is it not lockable?

Oh, and where do the auto hubs come in to all this?

Thanks!

No Patrols in Australia have centre diffs, so never use 4H or 4L on hard surfaces.

Check this link for information on auto hubs;

Thanks Tony. So it's rear wheel drive or 4 wheel drive centre locked if I understand correctly.

Does anyone find that poses a problem in areas where it's slightly too slippy for 2wd, but not really slippy enough to keep 4wd engaged?

Thanks Tony. So it's rear wheel drive or 4 wheel drive centre locked if I understand correctly. Correct.

Does anyone find that poses a problem in areas where it's slightly too slippy for 2wd, but not really slippy enough to keep 4wd engaged? Not me, decent tyres and a rear air locker do what I need in 2WD. That and I've learnt to drive a bit sideways while I wait for the tyres to hook up!!! Besides, if it's too slippery for 2WD then it should be OK to use 4WD for a short distance, I'm talking low speed.
