Redlands 4WD ... bloody good price too as they had heaps of problems with the aftermarket fuel tank - did a bit of customising also ($2685 total) ... much happier with the height - that's about all I want now ... just all the other toys to go in it ...

Thanks mate - been unhappy with the previous setup for a while - whoever had it before me put variable rate springs in the front in the they were virtually collapsed .. shocks were dead set stuffed all round, and they hadn't changed the original arms, link pins etc, so everything was strained to the buggery ... nice old ride now.

Excellent work BigRig. She looks great mate!

What sort of 4x4ing do you do most? Beach work or bush?

G'day mate - I sort of do pretty close to a 50/50 of both - being I live in the Bayside suburbs of Brisbane, Moreton, Stradbroke and Bribie Island are all relatively easy day trips (although Moreton ferry is a bit expensive for a day) and I do a fair bit of beach work, however, the whole family loves camping so we try to get out to parks relatively often as well (was at Janowen Hills 4wd park last weekend for 3 days). A mate of mine lives literally right on the doorstep of Beerburrum State Forest and there are some seriously wild tracks up there, so do that a bit also (twice in last 10-12 weeks). A good mix to keep it interesting and depends on what we want to do - I wouldn't say I'm an overly advanced driver (far from it compared to some), but the rig hasn't missed a beat with doing what I've asked of it to date ... truck looks a treat at the moment as it had heaps of lantana scratches etc on it, so gave it a cut and polish and got the duco done for stone chips and deepers scratches - hence the shine (they acid washed the rims also, which bought them back to life too).

Thanks for the comments on the rig - he's thirsty, not too fast, and not the most comfortable truck on the road, but we love it to death ... nothing (and I mean nothing IMHO) beats hitting the beach or bush somewhere, setting up camp, lighting a fire and just kicking back whilst looking at the surrounds - I wear a suit and tie to work nearly every day, and I would give up 10 nights in a Hilton, for 3 nights camping on a beautiful beach somewhere with a rod (fishing of course LOL) in one hand and a tinny in the other.

Ripped the side steps off today - getting new brackets (they were just about all seized), sanding back the pipework, priming and repainting (gloss black - killrust) - polishing the alloy treads, etc, etc ... another shot of the tank without the steps on also - looks tough, but unfortunately, my 3" legs have a hard time getting my in the drivers seat!!! Funny that - was thinking (not the the piping is strong enough, but should be for what I do) of binning the alloy treads and whacking some checkplate on there ... as said, the piping is not meant for rock crawling, but would definitely take "a bit" of punishment in the interim ...

Why did you find it so hard to get the bolts and nuts for it anyway??? does no one specialise in nuts and bolts in sunny QLD

Special Nutters maybe ... actually, more than likely ... but all the bolt places (certainly near me) do bugger all automotive bolts/nuts .. bit of a joke really ... and for the 30 odd that I needed in total (around $9 worth of normal bolts) I figured it wasn't really worth the drive across the city to find someone that does ... let's just call the assembly somewhat retro-fitted!!!!! lol

Not the best setup for flex shots, but got bored this morning so drove the Tank up a small stone at our joint ... kids loved it, but just made me want to p!ss off quick and go 4wd'ing!!! Doesn't look it in the shots, but the wall is just over 1m tall, so I'm reasonably happy with the new setup - still pretty stiff though as it's only a week old, so hopefully it'll soften up a bit more.

Going to Beerburrum on Sunday the 19th now, so will have some better ones - anyone up for a day out that day??

Looks very tidy Bigrig. love the colour mate. very nice. Did you get the Snorkel fitted yet?

Bigrig
27th November 2010, 09:55 PM
Thanks for the comments mate. Snorkel is booked in for Tuesday 7th December ... they have to do some jigging with the air box to rip out the original and replace with a retro-fitted one from a VN commodore (mine is cracked from LPG backfire) ... not overly difficult, just fidgety ... probably getting the remote console UHF fitted the same day - under the passengers seat with the handset beside the auto gear lever (mounted on the woodgrain rubbish). I'm going to get them to extend the rear diff breather also so it sits up the front guard with the other diff, gearbox and transfer case - could do it myself, but while they got it they can use the hoist for easier access (only sits in the factory position currently just above the rear cross member - still not protected enough). I'll throw up some more pics when the snorkel is done - not much of a change, but they definitely 'add' to the look of the car as well as the other obvious benefits.

Good stuff, if you are getting them to fit the radio then get them to put the base unit up under the dash mate on top of the transmission tunnel up out of the way, there is room there. If you fit it under the seat then you will wreck it quickly the first time you get water in your car, and you likely will. It a little more difficult to fit there but they are fitting it so it aint your problem ;)

The VN airbox will be interesting to see mate, get some before and after pics and post them up. It will save you a fortune on Air Filters running cheap Holden ones. Bonus!! What size is the inlet and outlet pipes on the VN box?? you really want to make sure that your getting at least 3' in and out or it will starve you of power.

I agree that the diff breather extensions are easier to fit on the hoist for sure but make sure they aren't robbing you for the kit mate?? at the end of the day for you to do it it will cost you less than $40 for bits but they may sell you an packaged "breather extension kit" for more than $100 and charge you another $60 to run the hoses. ask them for an idea on the cost of that little mod cause its easy as to do yourself as you say and could save you more than $100 for less than an hour of your time in the driveway.??

Looking good mate

What size is the inlet and outlet pipes on the VN box?? you really want to make sure that your getting at least 3' in and out or it will starve you of power. - Will do on posting pics, it is apparently pretty common and I already have the details of the fitout - inlet and outlet are run from the GQ original pipes (95mm from memory) as that is defiinitely a problem - moreso on the inlet as the commo one is a smaller, rectangular inlet which will get covered and sealed.

Good area for learning no doubt, but heaps of advanced and extreme stuff also ... Janowen is good in that the main road around the property is 'easy' with all the advanced tracks running off it (some areas of the easy tracks are a bit beyond that at times though - note the photo in the video of my mates car with the rear wheel off the ground - that's going out the driveway to the campsite!!). I did a couple of the level 3 - hard tracks (Easy, Medium, Hard, and Extreme) and only after they had dried out from the little bit of rain we had ... no chance in the wet!!!! For me anyway ...

Nice neat job on the UHF too - tucked under the passenger seat with a remote hand unit on a two metre extension to bring it around and under the left side of the steering wheel. Why the UHF under the seat???? You wouldn't want to do any deep river crossings. How do you know what channel you are on????

I mounted mine under the steering column and have troubles knowing what channel I'm on when I'm on the fly, now regret mounting it there.

No room in the console mate - putting in a 6.2" Sat Nav with all the bells and whistles, and didn't want to mount it straight to the top of the dash - should be right, and so long as I don't get caught up in anything too deep, it'll hopefully stay dry ... it's got a remote LED handset, so no need to mess with the bas unit at all ... and you can knock the placement all you like champion, it's not going to get any response to move it though!! lmfao ...

Have a look at the mirror type gps as well have not seen one in real life, but have seen them advertised and i think they would be better than both the other type.

this is one type, this is more a reverse camera mirror but you can hook a gps up 2 it

Thanks mate - they look a treat ... sounds really practical, as you could clip off the monitor when out bush etc, so it doesn't constantly go to the camera. The GPS/stereo I was thinking of are just the ones advertised in the parts section on the front page of NissanPatrol.com.au - link below:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280599318580

Can't see any reason these wouldn't do the trick - not out to rock the world as it were, and they have all been finishing around the mid $500's to $600 on each of the bids - the cheapest one I can find in Northfield etc are at least double that price ... decisions, decisions ...

I was looking at one of those as well, I don't like the postition of having 1 in the centre thought. If i was parked and looking up an address on the gps or searching for music, i think the auto gear stick would get in the way and be annoying. Dont think its a great spot for a dvd / tv player for same resons.

Guess I wouldn't really know untill i seen one in a patrol, maybe it would be ok

Thanks mate - pretty pleased with it, and it's nearly where I want it ... the remote handset is great, as you don't need to take focus off the road to change channels, squelch etc ... more vids to come after the next few weeks as I've got a bush trip to Beerburrum next weekend (plenty of mud as it has been bucketing down here), another trip to Janowen, and more than likely another trip to Moreton Island (sand etc) for 4 days camping ...

Yeah - pr!ck of a spot for them, but what can you do - they do come with a steering wheel mount also, so you can change stations, CD's, MP3's etc from the wheel without touching the head unit ... trial and error, but I am ging for it - should be fitted in the next week or so ... and as it turns out, the missus is getting a Rubicon on Thursday so I can rip the extra row of seats out of the back of mine - sooooooo .... out comes the magic toolbox, in go custom drawers (going to try myslef - eeekkk...), dual battery system and maybe, just maybe a fridge (thinking not at this point - would prefer a small chiller box and put the fridge in the trailer) ... lucky I left the poly bags in the springs when I got them swapped over - will ensure the springs don't sag too much with the weight ... and the last thing I'll be looking at is diff locks ... but that is 2011's problem and not convinced I need them yet ...

Well, it took some effort for the boys who installed it, but still worked out heaps cheaper than getting one through Nissan and as per the photos, whilst it looks like Frankenstein, it's probably stronger!! lolol ...

You can see where they blocked up the outlet on the top to rejoin the stock Nissan one, and same goes for the rectangular inlet on the bottom (plated up) and moved to the front. Nothing you can't do with a a bit of zincanneal and a kilo of sikaflex!! lolol ... They also removed the hose/line mounts etc from the old box and pop rivetted onto the retro fitted one to keep it clean ...

You can see the balance pipe on the inlet below for LPG/Snorkel setup (5/8 connection/pipe) from the top of the inlet to the back of the mixer.

Nah mate - the road off the T junction on GC road ... pretty straight and slight dip, but does the trick - West Mt Cotton Road has some alright sections for it also, but usually have to do it late as it sees a bit of traffic and they can't see much with the high beam and 4 x Lightforce's punching down the road at them!!! Forgot to mention, have started talking to Derek about an engine rebuild also (not till later this year) - whilst doing it, looking at doing the usual things people have suggested (porting the heads etc) and throwing in a small super charger - yeehah - but any recommendations/suggestions from anyone on this would be most welcome - didn't want to put the super charger on in it's current form. even though the engine runs well, it is getting long in the tooth (270K's now) and I am worried about throwing it in and 'breaking' stuff .. so thought it appropriate to look at as part of an overall engine rebuild ... basically looking for more power to accomodate the additional weight it will eventually have on board (roof top cargo carrier with touratop tent possibly, storage system and all the goodies I'll be throwing in it, new front bar and winch, custom rear bar with twin tyre carrier, me as I continue to expand, etc, etc) ...

Love it!!!!) is the torque - never realised that it would 'affect' it that much as such, but seems to hold speed really well now up hills without dropping back a gear, and generally picks up speed heaps better ... will be interested to see on the next decent highway run if I am getting any reduction in consumption ...

Dhuck helped me install a new head unit into the rig - GPS, USB, SDRam slot, DVD, and all the sh!t, and it's a cracker!!! Ryan saw it last night and he too is sold on it - I'll post some photos, but if you are looking for a new unit, these are hard to pass up. Yep, from China, but what isn't these days - cost me zero for the install and the unit was delivered with preloaded maps for $288!! Similar units through Northfield and the likes START at about $1000 without maps, so pretty stoked with old eScab on this one!!

Installed a new steering wheel yesterday (thanks again to dhuck for the recommendation - it's a beauty) and according to the badge, it's a MoMo ... delivered with boss kit for $90 or thereabouts ... don't quite think MoMo know about this particular model (lol), but it does the trick anyway!!! Pics to come.

Next on the list - wheel spacer with dual mounts for reverse lights - custom made and going on in about 2 weeks ... God I love this stuff!!!!!!

Looks like the kids are singing for their supper again this month!! lmfao

Yeah thanks mate. I thought that also, but they reckon it will be ok - it's still 33" but 20mm wider than what I have one now, so wasn't expecting a massive weight difference - that said, is there anyway I can "reinforce" the barn door hinges to make it stronger??

Bigrig
20th February 2011, 10:05 AM
Sooooo ... hopefully before next weekend for the trip ...

1. Maxxis 305/70R16's all round - decided to go for these over the Mickey Thomson's - about $65 per tyre cheaper fully fitted, and let's face it, with all the hype around, I thought I'd give them a go.

2. 85% reduction gears in the transfer case - decided on this over the 43% ones. Figured it's a small price to pay to have to change out of 4H and 4L for cruising around on slower tracks - this one I can't wait for - took priority (bigtime) over a front locker.

3. Rear custom tyre spacer with twin spottie mount tube bar (follows the line of the barn door window around to the top - twin lights then sit above that window - using slimline LED's attached to the reverse light, but with an isolator switch so I don't blind people when reversing at the local shops!!!).

The storage/shelve system might have to wait - after all this expense, I want to save some spondoolies to get the engine done in the next 3 or 4 months.

Now a question!!

The suspension - I've read other threads regarding spring spacers, but I'm thinking of putting 30mm spacers in. What are the pros (apart from lifting the guts off the ground) and cons. I have heard it makes the ride "coarser" and more rigid because it's actually compressing the springs a bit, but is that correct? Does it affect the flex? How? Etc.

Thanks a million in advance people!!

Thanks mate - yep, 3 degree caster correction installed as it was a whale after the lift. Worried about this also with putting spacers in as it will only push the radius arms further down (car up) and they'll be even closer to the rear guard also. But I am intending to get dropboxes put in to offset that.

All spring spacers will do is lift your Patrol. You're not adding weight fitting them so they won't compress the springs.
In your case your shock absorbers are already to short for the lift you have so you risk loosing an inch of suspension travel on compression.
I would be fitting a Superior bent upper arm before you do any other suspension modifications.

Your wheel alignment bloke doesn't know enough about modifying Patrols.
it is important to correct the castor after fitting a suspension lift as castor is what gives your steering self centering while your driving, but it won't straighten the steering wheel.
To straighten the steering wheel after doing a suspension lift you need to remove the fixed length factory drag link (the steering arm in front of the diff that runs between the steering box and the LH steering knuckle) and replace it with an aftermarket adjustable arm. Get a heavy duty arm as being in front of the diff they are prone to damage.

Sorry mate - another quick one - would this also affect the panhards etc? i.e. putting the diffs out of centre? The front one is adjustable, but the rear is rigid. Same goes for the link pins on the swaybars.

I guess the question is - are spacers worth fitting? want some extra clearance, but don't know if it's worth the effort.

Thanks in advance.

YNOT
20th February 2011, 01:50 PM
It will affect the diff centering, you won't notice it so much on the front because you've already adjusted it back to centre (and can again), but the rear will be further out.

Sway bar link pins from memory you have extended pins on the front which are too long for your current lift so they will be fine. Can't remember what link pins you have in the back but look at the angle of the sway bar ends, if they're pointing up they need to be extended.

I don't know that I would be fitting the spacers on their own, it would be better to reasses your suspension needs and look at it as a total package.

You could still get an adjustable rear panhard at any time, it will work with the lift you have now and any lift you do in future. The bent upper arm would be a good to fit now but I'm not sure if Superior do an adjustable bent arm that could be adjusted to suit future suspension lifts.

The rear panhard is rigid, but is a Stealth rod that was installed when I did the lift, so the diff centres in the back are all good also - if I go the bent arm from SE, swap the shocks and extend the rear pins (they are slightly extended now but not as much as the front), then you reckon a 30mm spring spacer installation is worth it?? I'd prefer that than stuff around with a new installation all round. I figure all that would see me about $8-900 out of pocket with a 30mm height increase ... and from the measurements done, that would see the car sitting about 145mm above standard (nearly 6") ...

OK all good with the extended rear panhard, 30mm lift won't make much difference in that case.

Extend the rear link pins and fit a bent upper arm and you should be OK to fit the spacers.

Choose your shock absorber lengths carefully and do it after you've done the mods above. I don't know who you normally deal with to get your suspension components (Redlands 4X4?) but you need to put your Patrol on a wheel travel ramp with the shocks disconnected so you can measure the required shock lengths and order from those measurements.

Depending on what shocks you need you may also need longer bump stops.

Glad to hear it mate - I know the thread is long, but figured it's like a reference document on the mods - trying to keep them in one place and then others can use it also (so there Kelvin!! LOL). Getting Tuf42's (Kelvin) camper is a bonus also - saves me throwing things like the second battery and solar shower setup into the car - keeps the weight etc on the trailer which I can obviously disconnect at location and drive Tank around merrily without worrying of gear coming away from mounts etc.

if i spend any more on the bus this century im dead hung drawn and quartered so says the cook lmao
was putting the avenger winch on the bus yesterday, WAS............ it dont fit into a NISSAN bull bar made by ARB
so instead of spending $1150.00 on the winch i ended up with a Warn 9000 at $2040.00.

Yeah, top dollar meeting you too mate - thanks for the hospitality. Well ... I think I should come over again on Sunday as we really didn't get enough time to fiddle with the ECU software ... oh ... and another drink would be ok too!!! LOL

Just when you thought this thread had died!!! Rear custom made spacer bar with twin light mounts goes on today - got a couple of LED camping lights from a mate that are going on the mounts so should throw heaps of light. An interior LED worklight going in the rear also. Will throw up some pics later tonight to show the output.

Not sure if we're getting away this weekend, so if not, going to have a lash at the rear drawers and start that project - fingers firmly crossed ... not sure I saw 'sticky tape' as one of the required tools to use, but no doubt my effort will be very 'Macgyver' style!!!! LOL ... how much Mr Magoo Glue and how many paddle pop sticks you reckon it'll take!! LMFAO
