I want to wash out the provent 200 filter. Its black as the ace of spades and has only done about 15k. I don't really want to fork out $70 for the filter just yet. I have done a thread search but couldn't' find a definitive answer on this. I was thinking of using petrol to clean it out as it will dissolve the oil pretty well.
Just wondering if anyone else has wash their out and what do you use?

Thanks.

We use a parts cleaner at work to clean the engine breathers out. Is the filter just a steel gauze? If so petrol should work a treat grab a 4l ice cream container and give her a bath.

I was concerned about the petrol vapours going into the air intake thats all really. I don't particularly want an explosion under the bonnet. I have a bottle of k&n filter cleaner too.

I usually just wrap a rag or papertowel or similar around it and squeeze. Repeat til papertowel has minimal oil on it. Seems to work for me.

Being that the filter is a paper/woven cloth matt type stuff I wasn't real keen on washing it in anything.

I just used the filer cleaning product from k&n I have and all it is is degreaser, same colour and exact same smell to the chemtech degreaser I have. Anyhow I soaked it in that, got all the oil out of it and washed it in hot water. Dried it up with the air compressor and is all good now.

Tried minerel turps but it didn't seem to disperse the oil to well. Anyhow the filter cleaner/ degreaser worked really well in the end.

I used Prepsol on mine, seemed to clean it up really well. Then just dried it out with compressed air.

No can do I'm afraid, wouldn't be a popular decision after spending a week away. Plus got cricket, and promised I'd pick the missus up tomorrow night from her 10 year high school reunion.

Depending on how much oil is in there I would reckon. It prolly would have been o.k to leave but I though while I have the bonnet up, why not.
