Where'd you get out - on the Bay?

the ferret
29th October 2012, 11:42 PM
The Gurnard/ Scorpion fish is not bad eating, however you must watch those spines on the dorsal, the spine is covered with skin, and under the skin is a VERY nasty venom.
To be stung by this fish, you will wish you had never been born, worse than Cobler or Flathead, I had the misfortune of being stung and thought I would never make it back to the ramp.
Now, I just cut them off.
Cheers, the ferret.
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt164/ferret/fish_common_gurnard_perch.jpg

The only thing that will ease the pain and neutralise the venom is very hot water or tea or coffee poured onto the sting area..

Or spirits.. Drank thought, not on the sting.. Don't waste it. ;)

I dint mind throwing the line out.. But down here it's all you seem to do..
Best I've done is a 45cm snapper back home on yorke peninsula..

The Bay is Mexican for Port Phillip bay and I drifted off Werribee from ten metre mark to literally back to the boat ramp.

Don't mind dropping a line when I can, but I paying for it this morning. Very tired.
I normally fish for flathead, whiting, squid, garfish, snapper as a by catch cos I don't really target them

It's happened on my boat before. So he pushed the hook through the other side of his finger, squashed the barb and tried to bring it back through again, caused more bad than good so cut hook as low as possible and pushed back through his finger. Believe it or not he refused to see a doctor and just wanted to keep fishing.

Cheers Mego, i generally fish in around 40ft (15m or there abouts) of water thers not much that can compare with the shimano 5500 baitrunner screaming with an over stimulated snapper on the end of it apart from when you get them within a meter or two away from the boat and they start to kick again, that gets the heart rate up again hahaha. Heres a pic i dug up from a few years ago when i was in Eden NSW of a couple of 3.5kg salmon i got off the surf at Green cape also known as Disaster bay in the Ben Boyd national park http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/11/88.jpg This is the beach i got those salmon from http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/11/89.jpg22585

Your right in land is usually about 10 degrees hotter then the coast. A couple of mates of mine mix up what looks like some master chef recipe for the flies for when the go shooting, they rekon that normal repellants makes those big blowies hungrier haha. I've been told about this stuff i think its called bushmans or something like that works pretty well.

You get some great salmon off the wall aswell. But when the salmon are on, you got no chance of a good spot. There would be about 150 fishos on the wall. Wish I had some to share mate.

Most of the fishing I've done in the past few years has been in NZ. Couple of mates & I head over for a week at a time chasing kingfish & snapper. We have been fishing with the same charter boat & skipper for 10 years, Earl Grey, & have never had a bad year.

I used to fish a fair bit out of Jervis Bay, everything from game fishing to chasing flatties for a feed, but eventually got jack of the 5 or so hour drive only to be hit with southerlies for 3 days.

Hopefully once I get up north I'll have a few spots to share, once I find them :)

Finally got an honest answer out of a tackle shop in Noosaville, saying that the fishing is and has been shit this time of year. Whether its the holiday traffic on the water. But he said the fishings been terrible. We normally come up to Noosa in October, march and July.
Winter fishing here off shore is great during winter. And shitful during summer.

The water on the Noosa river at the moment is 27.9 degrees. That has got to be a reason why the fishing is shit.
I'll keep persevering but I'm not too confident especially since we never come during new year period.

Don't know if you've seen this site Mego, but there might be some helpful info on there. Fishing Noosa (http://hookedon.com.au/index.php) page run by a local tackle store Hooked On Angling. Hopefully they might have some tips on where's good at this time of year.

Nothing wrong with getting a fish for the kids. Even if its a Toadie.

The Qld sand whiting a far too tasty to be used as bait.

Anyway I'm off to some of Noosa's finest off shore reefs which I think won't be that good this time if year. Might get a Cobia. Definitely wont get any coral trout but I really hope I'm wrong there.
A Spanish mackerel would be nice.

If you drive another hour n a bit you will come to Eden, i'm here now 2 - 3 kg salmon off the surf and if you have your boat you can chase the king fish and boneto tuna. Its been a bit slow for me this week just a couple of salmon, silver travelly, flatties and as many 4" yellow tail scad and leather jackets you wanted!!
