I'll have to go hunting to find the pics you're after, but in the mean time check this link to ARE's website. It's a big page with LOADS of info on Patrol intercoolers with facts and figures to back up everything they say. Towards the bottom is a few paragraphs about the effects of fitting fans to intercoolers.

I haven't been able to find the photos I was looking for but this is what I have found;
Fitting a fan underneath a is not possible on ZD30 DI, can be done on ZD30 CRD though.
Shown below is I think a 9 inch fan bolted directly to a re-cored factory intercooler.

If you want to bolt a fan to the intercooler shroud 11 inch is about the biggest you can go (It was photos of this that I was trying to find).

If you wanted to go a few steps further you could get a Cross Country replacement upgrade intercooler which comes with an underslung fan.

Cross Country I/C beside factory I/C.

Short answer is the fans are beneficial at low speeds but cause an airflow restriction at high speeds.
Check the link to ARE intercoolers in the second post, these guys have done a ton of research into the subject.

In my opinion yes. But to get the most benefit from the bigger intercooler you need a bigger/taller scoop.

Since most of the pics in this thread are mine I thaught I would answer your question.
The larger intercooler makes a big difference over the standard one. EGT are roughly 100c less with the Cross Country intercooler. The fan on the Cross Country intercooler is mounted underneath and works very well.
Adding a fan to the factory intercooler makes a noticable difference but it is not the same as a larger intercooler.

Please note that the intercooler in the first pic is not mine (Its Patrol King's). I dont like that method of mounting the fan because you get a lot of air passing around the intercooler instead of through it.
Mount the fan on the engine cover so the shroud still works.

I had a fan on top of the IC on my 4.2. I reckon it was good crawling around the hills up in the high country but not great on the highway. I've since removed it and I'm undecided where to go now.

Is anyone doing bigger intercoolers for the 4.2? That looks like it could be an option.
