Hi Guys,

Looking at buying a GU IV (in Vic/far east melbourne), but not 100% sure on what's a good price, and don't want to get ripped off.

We'd aiming at around:
- 2004 or 2005 GU IV
- 3.0TD Automatic
- 130-180k
- at least dual airbags, cruise control and 7seats

I'm able to pay around $25k onroad, as i'd like to keep a few k spare for bullbar/winch/roofrack/draws/dual-battery.

I've seen a few advertised around the 27-30 mark, with rego/tyres running low which adds to the cost.

Am I expecting too much to get one for 25?

Cheers,
Dan

2004/2005 with 25k up your sleave, i would definantly be looking at 4.2's. And 25k is close to the coin for one.

ZD30 engines are prone to failure, they often have problems due to do with the MAF sensor and the EGR valve getting blocked, basically it causes you intake manifold to become full of sludge and the piston heads melting or burning generally being aleast a full head rebuild sometimes it's cheaper to buy a new engine straight from Nissan.

Now on the other hand, if you put 28k into an earlier GU TD42 you will more than likely get one with winch, roof rack, dual batts etc and you'll sleep easier at night knowing your not about to pull the pin on a hand grenade in the morning.

Oh and by the way Nissan won't accept fault after a 2002 model because they claim they fixed the problem which is not exactly accurate, I've heard of 04's going kaput too.

Yeah, I've been doing a bit of reading on it. Still a worry buy most people agree by the. Gu IV it was sorted out. I'd be installing NADS just in case.

To be honest I'd prefer a 4.2td, but wifey needs to drive it and I didn't think the 4.2td came in an automatic transmission.

Isn't it easier to drive over rough terrain in an auto?

I'd definately spring up to 30 if it was already kitted out and in good nick

Check ebay mate, there has been a few recently 20-25k. No idea why but prices have come down in last few months. Maybe just more on the market.

I'm not the bloke to ask on autos I think, there are auto GQs so I assume there are the same in GUs, I think stone guys might be waiting for the Y62 to cone out in the next few months and may be selling off their TD42s in case prices drop dramatically, just a theory, they're at very different price points though

I don't doubt yours is worth 60k. The real good ones modded right up will always chase a pretty penny. However, all i am saying is, in the last 6 months i have been browsing, there are a lot of 4.2td gu's selling for between 20-30k. Yet 6 months ago, there were 0 for sale under 30k.
Having said that, the ad number above is for a stock 4.2td gu with near 300km on the clock, in good condition. They are out there.

Just saying.......

Yeah, just had a bit of a look, and the Kms are pretty high for 4.2td in my price range, 200 to 300, what do you need to watch out for with patrols with this many kms? We plan on adding a heap of kms in the next few years, so want something with plenty of life left in it.

I put on offer of 25k on one with more miles on it than that, and was pretty much laughed out the door. Greedy dealership! Reckoned he'd get more from the wholesalers, but I'd guess he was lying to us.

Gotta keep trying!

I bought my GUiv last week from a Sydney dealer (sight unseen). It had spent its life in Vic and was transfered to NSW reg (6 months) in the price. Very tidy and original but 210,000kms (which I was not at all afraid of). I couldnt get a GU3 at that price.

Keep looking and base your decision on the right vehicle before thinking too much about the price. As an example, you will forget about a $5k difference in purchase price long before you forget about what you are driving every day. Beware of exmine vehicles at the lowend too. Not saying they are not value for the right person, but for the unsuspecting, they can be a money pit.

My 03 ST-L was $27K, 7 all leather and electrics, 7 seats sahara bar, new tyres, dual batteries and it had 130K on it. The main reason I bought it was when I looked underneath it saw it had not done any serious off road work, and since buying it I have spent another $6k on it. . . . . I would have preferred a 4.2, but the same spec vehicle with that engine was closer to $40k when I got mine.
