Sorry to hear about your dilemma mate that sucks for sure but you are on a Patrol only forum & we are very one eyed about our Patrols so if your asking which 4x4 to go for next the only answer your likely to get here is Patrol all the way & frankly it will be the best move you could make.

I think fate is lighting the path to a love affair with the Mighty Patrol

Just read my post and it did not seem really helpful at all mate, sorry.:1087:
Question, does the Paj go off road, if it does how much for a new motor Vs another 4wd like a GQ.
Can you get a Recon motor at a reasonable price?
Is the Paj in a good condition that would warrant buying a new motor?

Trols are tuff with plenty of ground clearance and very reliable.
And they look damn good too
They are comfortable (for the misses) and easy to drive
Great for shopping, picking the kids up from school, going to work, and gettin down and dirty
well theyre great for just about anything.
My advice "GO THE TROL"
But remember where you are!!

Cheers Pete

You'd get a good GQ fer that sort of coin, if you look around. Then you could part the Bitsaremissing out!!

Heres a search on Carbuddy.com.au for Nissan Patrol Diesel under $7500.00. They are out there
http://www.carbuddy.com.au/buy/cars.aspx?pg=1&mk=NISSAN&md=PATROL&map=7500&sort=99&ft=D

There are quite a few on Ebay as well http://cars.ebay.com.au/?cmd=SearchListing&sacat=&a39=1966&a41=26137&a33512=-24&saprclo=&saprchi=10000&a6=-24&pf=Show+Items&tatitle=&a85=-24&sabfmts=0&fdrv=1&sadis=200&fpos=Postcode

If you pick up a second hand car, you are going to be fixing it in some way or another so you might just find that it is more cost effective to drop a new motor in the Pajero (a reasonable 4x4 in their own right) and maybe even modify it a bit. That way you know the car you have isnt going to break down anytime soon and the work done will come with warranty.

Thats how I got my Patrol this year, I bought a cheap one that was known to be damaged (Stuffed Head) and spent $4000.00 on repairing it. I now have a GQ in great condition for cheaper than I could get an equivalent one that would still require repairs anyway.

Sorry boys, I know this is a Patrol forum but it would be remiss of us giving advice (however noteworthy that advice may be) and not telling all that we know. For example that the GQ 2.8TD has a history of overheating due to the aluminium heads they put in them at manufacture.

Just my two cents worth....

Cheers,

Rob

Agreed, for $7000 you can get a good GQ (or 60 series). Treat it as a business decission, get more quotes for rebuild/recond motor (seems excessive), explore all options.

Or look for a rusted/damaged Paj and do an engine transplant.
Saw one at a car yard on Lord St East Perth couple of weeks ago for $2K

Just an option, oh yeah, GO THE PATROL

A mate of mine is a local mechanic (specialises in LPG, so obviously does heaps of 4wd's) and his comment is simple - for every Patrol transmission/transfer case, he would see 3-4 Toyota's ... for every Patrol Diff, he would see more than half a dozen toyotas' ... if you want a bulletproof drive train and assembly, you can't go past the patrol ... simple as that ... by the way, you know that advertisement on TV at the moment where they roll a Toyota Hilux down the hill to fill it with coconuts and then proclaim it as 'unbreakable' ... well, not true - we had 5 cars out on the weekend and one was a new hilux - he followed me through a couple of washouts/dropoffs, and YES, we did manage to break it!!! So much for Toyota advertising!!! And no, nothing even squeaked on the patrol, let alone broke ...
