Yeah, I'm ganna adjust the weight distribution hitch if I can to see how much difference it makes but air bags are needed I think.

Have a great holiday Kris and enjoy yourselves big time.
Just be aware of your rear spring towers if you get air bags, they are a weak point when extra stress is placed on them.
Better to try to lessen the load on the tow hitch.

Thanks for that, I think it's a lot better now with a bit of reshuffling. It is towing unexpectedly very well. I can only feel the weight on the back but I don't even feel like there is anything on the back. Steering and brakes seem to be working great as well. We'll give it another couple of stretches of road to decide. Cheers

Mate, hard to say but best so far was 17l/100 and worst yesterday was 23l/100 heading into a gale force wind. The old 3l was struggling to maintain 90km hr yesterday but otherwise a pleasure to drive

Thanks guys, We've moved a bit from last post. We are now on the side of Normanton river enjoying the sunset.

A bit of a hick up when we first got into QLD and hit the dirt from Camoolweal to Gregory Downs

18373

But on the way in no time.
18374
Tip for all drivers with a trailer or van, cover your back window no matter what protection you have. Most smart ones do. Hahahah. I learned the hard way.

We then got to Gregory downs
18375 for a night and headed for Lawn hill National Park which is bloody amazing and highly recommended.
18376
18377this one is from the top of the gorge
18378me having a swim in paradise

18379
18380

We stopped for diesel and quick ice cream at Burke & Wills roadhouse
18381
18382
This is their entertainment area but don't waste too much pf your time there is nothing else. Haha

So at Normanton ATM an having a few rums again . Tomorrow we are going to karumba for some great fishing on the gulf . Then back here sometime later for the trip up the cape!

A mate buried his supply this side of the big sign just South of Mapoon when we went there for a day trip, luckily it was only two bottles of rum, and we were able to find it on the way South

Yeah mate, been watching the dry zones but unfortunately the grog doesn't last that long so all good... Hahaha

Spent the day on the old telegraph track yesterday with heaps of crossings and some hairy stuff . No pics on the phone so you'll have to wait.

No damage but threw the alignment out of whack on one of the rocky crossings.
Got that on video...haha. You can see the dog flying through the air in the car tho.

Here's some other teasers

The photo does these correlations no justice but with the tyres right down they are still bone shattering.

they are whopper corrugations! I don't think I've ever seen them so clearly in a pic before.

All we can be is be grateful for well damped coils, and not the trusty but harsh leaves.

Is the best speed, apart from dead slow, still reasonable? In saying that travelling at speed so the body never catches up with what is happening below looks pretty harsh on the suspension, not to mention wheel bearings etc. I watch people attack the speed humps at the local shops with gusto, and think, that's gotta cost, sooner or later. And there is only one of them, not thousands :-)

Thanks for the other pics - what a trip! Great for the Billy Lids, too.

I haven't found a best or comfortable speed for these suckers, they all just jar the vehicle and body. You get over them really quickly and just want to get out of there.
Lucky the Patrol is such a tough vehicle as anything else bar maybe the toyo would fall apart. I suppose that's why you don't see any thing else but these two brands .

On main tracks the most comfortable Speed i found was 110 km/ hr as you're just sitting on top of the corrigations I think but then you have the other obvious dangers, pot holes, dust holes, dips, bumps, wild life, etc

Yeah mate, it was fun but unfortunately being the only vehicle in a lot of cases i had to opt for the chicken track or go around. Mind you there was 50 vehicles drowned this season. One being a Prado which crossed the nolans brook and didn't make it when I pulled up. The crossing looked more than doable just like others including cypress crossing.

So I waited for other vehicles before I crossed just incase. I had the winch but wasn't getting into some of those waters...haha

So with a group of vehicles this would be an awesome drive.

Havent updated for a while now. Well, we're slowly moving south .

Left Bowen last week I think and went to Airlie beach. What a beautiful place!!
19808

Unfortunately we pretty much drove in and drove out as it was too crowded and too many tourists for my likeing.. Hahaha.

So we went to Mackay for a couple of nights to relax and to give the boys a bit of a play in the water park
19809

After that we went to Sarina ( town with a big toad)
19816

and did a tour of the sugar mill which was pretty cool
19810

How the old boys did it
19811
19812
19813
19814

This came out in 1969 and still use a very similar harvester today but with an air conditioned box on top
19815

Pretty amazing that nothing at all goes to waste with the sugar cane, and I mean nothing at all. This tour is highly recommended and has free grog and sauces tasting at the end:)

We then headed down to Carmilla beach to get smashed by the midgies(sand flies) but the effort was worth a couple of mud crabs and a couple of grunter
...sorry no pics on the iPhone
Oh here's one the little inlet just of the main beach

Yeah, very glad the alarm worked but I had to drive another 2 or so k's to get back to camp to drain it as all my tools were in the van. The CRD filter is a royal pain the the arse to drain

Hmmm filled up at Malborough (caltex)yesterday and just had my water in filter warning light come on .
This is what I got out of it. It's a 600ml bottle so around of 120-150ml of water!!!!

19824

Hope I got all of it. Didn't realise they hold that much!!!

Just drained another 150 ml of water out of the filter!!! Not happy.

I rang them today and they offered me a free tank of fuel hahaha

Anyway I just sent an email to Caltex Australia with all the details so at least the complaint is on file just in case any water gets through to the pump

Only got a quarter tank left so I'll just use it up and drain the filter every 50ks or so....not happy Jan!!!

Besides the Bundy rum and Bundy brewed drinks tours we also went to the Bert Hinkler museum which was a great little museum if you're into that kind of stuff.

There was a heap of educational videos, interactive flights, sit in replicas and other stuff.
The main attraction was the actual Avro baby which he flew Sydney to bundaberg
20351
There is also a replica which you can sit in with controls. Amazing how simple these thing were.

The glider which he built when he was 19 and flew off Bundy beach. The cockpit was his mothers ironing board...haha
20352

It was a top place to learn about a great Australian from Bundaberg

Few of his other planes

thanks for the updates!!

Is it possible to plumb in an extended drain terminating with a tap, to drain the filter, leaving the main drain tap on?

there would be a risk of it falling off and causing a drama, so maybe only temp, for highway use and of course only if it can be adequately secured?

Yeah possibly could do something along those lines.

But I think I will fit a water watch system as per my mates advise.

thanks, looks interesting. Vital to protect those high pressure components in CRD systems, I gather.

A bit different to the old fashioned carby TB42 - add a bit of methanol or ethanol to keep small amounts of water mixed in with the fuel and flowing through the filters. Only works with smallish amounts of water. I have long thought about installing a water trap/filter on Silver. Also, something on the tinny, but the tinny is 2 stroke. Apparently there are elements especially for 2 strokes to allow the oil through.

Oops, if that is a hijack, sorry!

That Bundy shop is clever clever marketing. Bundy was not one of my vices until I went there, and had that liquer, maybe over icecream. Yummo, and the door was opened to the distinctive flavour of the other drinks. Hooked :-)

Those are great underwater photos - to save me going back through the pages, you were using a DSLR and an underwater housing? You have produced some great piccies.
