GU harmonic balance bolt, locking tab?

Hi guys, I have heard so many reports of the GU 2.8 crank bolt working loose and destroying the key way on the crank, even when loctited. I am working on a lock tab that bolts onto the pulley using the two m6 puller threads, and once tightened to the prescribed torque, the bolt can be held from turning by this locking tab. Does anyone have any negative input on this idea?. I will make one and post up some pics for the do it yourselfer, cheers, the Ferret.

I think it's worth a try. It's the same concept that stops your Patrol front hub nuts from coming undone.

I used Loctite many years ago in the Automotive and Machining Industry, and found it to be pretty good. I think some people just grab a bottle of Loctite and think its all good. This is not true, and there are a few different types for different applications.

I think if you torque the bolts or nuts to the specified setting, and use the correct type of Loctite, it should be fine.

So in your opinion chops, have I used the right one? loctite 243, to 120ft lbs.

In my opinion, you have used the correct one. Since there is an issue with these bolts coming loose over time, I would get a second opinion on the torque setting.

Thanks chops, the book says 105 to 112 ft lbs, but I set the wrench to 120 plus an extra tug after the click, so prob about 125 to 130.

Brings back memorys we had a customer come back every 6 months or so to liquid metal his crank and balancer after it came loose. I wonder if it still going.
