MEGOMONSTER

Biggest cod caught at the cod classic was 117cm by a female competitor. 350 cod caught and released or something like that, over 4000 carp caught and donated to Charlie carp. Nearly 3000 competitor.

Just had a call from a mate Yarrawonga/Mulwala that a 95lbs Murray cod caught today. That's about 42-43kilos. No measurements yet and no photos. So don't really know if its true. At 95lbs, it would measure well over 120cms. I also won't believe till I see it.

They did say it was in the lake, if It was Dusko, then I would believe it. He only fishes for the big ones. Deep water holes etc.
Dusko has 5 trophy fish all over 100lbs, all caught on the lake and most out of the Everglades on lake Mulwala.
Pretty sure only one of them come out of the channel going under the border crossing bridge in town.

I used to have them on the roof bar like you have, next time you're over this way, pop in and I;ll show you. Even have some awesome internal LED lights. Home all the time

Went for a day trip to Yarrawonga, to see a few of my mates who have been camping there since Thursday.
Left bright and early yesterday morning and got there about 6 in the morning. Launched the boat and went for a fish. We didnt have to wait long before the first catch. It was a hundred mm Cod, yes that's right first fish was 10 cm.
then we got this only moments later
26815
66cm Murray Cod, my biggest so far out of the Murray river in Yarrawonga.
We did get another of the same size but was lost at the boat, just pulled the hook. Right under our nose.

I met two older gentlemen who were staying in the caravan park across the road from us. They would go out for three hours in the morning and three hours again at night to my knowledge they did this for 5 days.
They didn't catch a thing until day four, when one of them found a lure on a tree. He caught 3 cod ranging 64-80cm and a Goldie at 45cm all within three hours on the found lure! This was all in the lake.

Reports of decent Murray cod, Yellow Belly and big carp being caught behind the weir wall in Yarrawonga.
The water authorities have been letting out a stack of water from Lake Mulwala, raising the levels of the Murray causing a swarm of fish to swim upstream towards the weir.
The area is anticipating over 100mm of rain in the coming days.

with specks that catch the sun are very good up the Murray.

Did a bit of a google and found we dont have European carp but Cyprinus Carpio.
Earliest records show "carp" were introduced in 1907, and later Koi Carp
were released to control aquatic weed, seems that failed big time.
I was hoping that carp would control this blue/green algae, gotta be good for something eh

Hey mate, just wondering what kind of setup you have for these monsters? Starting to get into fishing more and wouldn't mind rigging up for this.

I have several set ups I use.

I use a couple of Shimano Catana 9 foot 6-8 kg with 4-5000 size reels with 20pound braid 2 mtr 20-30pound fluorocarbon leader in s paternoster rig for all my bait style fishing on lakes and rivers.

For my trolling rods I use 6-7 ft Gladiator Snakeskin graphite rods 3-4000 reels
20-30 pound braid and 30-40 pound leader.

Also a Shimano Tcurve hi modulas overhead rid with a 200 size Tica over head reel.

I also have another 36 different rid and reel combinations that I use for specific targets.

I got 2 new Shimano Expride 2-4kg rods with 3000 size Shimano Stradic Ci4 that I'm using for nearly everything. Cos they're new. Lol

Flatties squid whiting pinkies.
Yellow belly etc flicking lures around, soft plastics

Wow mate, that's awesome! Thanks! I've got a couple of 4-8/5-10kg rods, not sure what reels they are. But I'll braid them up and hit em with some good leader and see how I go.

You get much smaller stuff in the Murray? Been looking into getting a 1-3/2-4kg rod to double as a bream rod or for squid, that sort of stuff. Wonder if it's worth taking that down too.

Just remember hook size to bait size not to fish size.
My meter plus Cod was caught on a 2/0 hook, tiny compared to the mouth.
2-4 is good but might not be strong enough if fighting s fish wrapped in a snag.
At least 4-6 or 4-8 or 6-8. For peace of mind.
Even small cod under 60cm can fight hard.
Although the fight is in the first 30 seconds.

In the river it would.
Water moving way too fast.
Fish will be looking for shelter in slower water.
The lake I suspect they would shut down a bit.
With all the new water coming through I suspect new food comes with it.

Fun Fact :
Currently the Yarrawonga Weir is clearing 180,000 Megalitres per day down the Murray River.
Lake Mulwala has a capacity is 117,500 Megalitres. The flow down the river equates to 153% of the capacity of the lake.

So currently the lake is getting emptied and filled one and a half times a DAY. WOW.
