Recently my auto has not been engaging overdrive, not a lock up converter problem, but it seems the power button is in the 'on' position.. The button works and the 'power' light on the cluster goes on and off but is only staying a 3 speed box, no 4th and stretches out the gear changes. Anyone know if there is a quick fix or know what is wrong with it? I'm going home to do a diagnostic check so see what comes up there tonight.. Cheers

Being electronic, it sort of appears something is failing in the electrics themselves ... earth issue?? Hopefully someone can assist mate.

Yep, got the missus to take it to my auto guy and after he goes for a cruz around he rings me and says 'yeah u've lost 4th, but u have also lost 2nd now'.. So a bit of a surprise to me cause i thought it was electrical. But this guy knows what he's talking about, he treats me well so i don't question him when he says something. He added that this is the original tranny from 89' and he is surprised how well it's done and it must have been looked after.. I've added some pics (hope u guys can see them).. And NO, i like my auto and won't convert to manual.. Incase anyone thought they'd mention that ;)

As u can see all the internals had done their job and need replacing.. But i like the fact he broke it down for me and layed it out and spent a good hour on a Saturday to explain the bits and pieces to me. That's why i stick with this guy for auto problems. He also drove the missus home after dropping it off. Can't beat great customer service!!

That's a familiar sight, I rebuilt mine myself with the help of my old man, striping the gearbox down that far is a daunting task when you have never done it before

Glad 2 hear you got it all sorted :)

She doesn't look too well at all.
Cheers, the ferret.

But on a positive note, i thought the box shifted and drove well while it was on the way out so imagine how good she'll go when she gets back, plus i'm adding a external cooler which i don't have (since it tows a camper) and the usual upgrade to kevlar bands and getting the touque converter and lock up done..

Looks like you've got yourself a good mechanic. Mine has also lost 4th but I just dropped the pan of mine to find it was spotless clean so it looks like mine is electrical. For some reason 4th is still there if you back off but as soon as I touch the throttle it drops back to third???

I didn't think anything of it at the time but 1 of the bolts had fallen out of the valve body, it was the only thing in the pan that shouldn't have been & now my overdrive works again so all good
