I have noticed in my Patrol that the oil filter is different (first time diesel owner). Can someone assist in a step by step procedure to remove oil filter, do I need special tools

You don't need any special tools to remove the oil filter, just a 3/8 ratchet.
Undo the outer casing of the filter (there is a 3/8 square hole in the back of the casing that your ratchet will fit in) and remove from vehicle. Remove the filter element from the outer casing and replace the element, put a light smear of clean oil on all sealing surfaces.
Refitting is the opposite of removal.
Do not overtighten the casing when you refit it, just apply firm pressure.

Thanks Tony, when re-fitting the casing how tight should it be?

I'm not exactly sure. The torque setting may be cast into the oil filter housing if you look closely.

Hello Robert

The torque setting is on the oil filter housing. I normally just tighten until it feels firm.

Just remember to pause after you have loosen the housing to allow the oil to drain. You will know when it is finished when the oil has finished dripping off the front axle and making a mess on the floor.
