This is my GUIII ZD30 Auto Patrol that I bought new back in January 03. Over the years it’s seen annual trips to the Flinders and Gawler Ranges in SA and 3 Simpson Desert adventures along with a few fishing trips to the far west coast of SA. Currently it’s clocked up 155K and has proven to be a very reliable vehicle. So far!

Thanks for the welcome guy’s. Been lurking for a while, so thought I’d better member up!
We get out as much as possible. Just have to clean the old girl up after the last desert trip. Still sporting a ton of gravel under her from the recent rains and loose tracks, and missing most of the underbody paint. It’s time for a tidy up, so I’ll post some more pics when she’s a bit cleaner.

Cheers,

C'monChaz, please don't speak of the ZD30 as a grenade. We all know how you feel deep down about this wonderful motor.
You might give someone the wrong impression!!;) lol

Haha! I call it a grenade affectionately, but I get ribbed about it by a few mates, although they do respect the capabilities of the car and its engine. As long as the pin stays firmly in place, I’ll be happy.

There’s too much bad publicity, to not get the wrong impression….lol.

Hi Fletch,

Cheers mate. Yes, I think they are a great little motor. Just have to get around some of the inferior control systems that let them down.

Chaz

Nice truck, good to see it being put to good use.

Any details on the cost of the computer and the programs you are using? I have been thinking along the same lines (trying to get some of the crap off the dash) but have only seen the commercially available jobbies like VMS (?). Can the engine meters be applied to a 4.2?

Thanks

Hi Spoons,

A car PC similar to mine would most likely set you back around $1200 to $1400 depending on features and the Ozi $$. I bought most of the components from Mobile Computer Solutions (http://www.mo-co-so.com/) in the USA and built it myself, but you can buy complete units.

Much of the software that I use is free. Some of the better stuff needs to be bought, but none is too expensive. If your 4.2 is a factory intercooled 2003 or later, it will support diagnostic software. Check out ECUTalk (http://www.ecutalk.com/) which is also free.
Cheers,
Chaz

Hi Shayne,

You’re getting up there in the k’s, so hopefully many more to come. A few more people starting to come around with the ZD’s now and they do seem to be lasting longer. Time will tell, so fingers crossed……………..
